Otter Space Conference Center

14 sites · Lodging, Tents38 acres · Orick, CA
The Otter Space Conference Center was purchased in 2002 by Dr. Peter Alsop as a place of peace and healing, where human service professionals have come to train with Dr. Alsop and learn how to help children and families cope with issues such as chemical dependency, loss and grief, child abuse and trauma. We are located on the Yurok reservation right on the Klamath River just outside Orick, CA. The name Otter Space comes from a family of otters that live just down river. It’s also combination of “Artist’s Space” and “Outer Space” and implies the importance of thinking “out of the box” and valuing music and the arts in healing and living our lives fully, as well as the need to pass on earth and people-friendly skills to help our children survive into the future. We are "off the grid", through a Redwood forest and over a mountain down into the Klamath River valley. We have a 5 acre meadow, and orchard with 50 trees, peaches pears, apples, cherries, plums, pluots, apricots and grapes. We are right on the Klamath river. It's a great place to come and recharge your internal batteries. (We have solar panels and generators to charge our other kind of batteries, because we're off-grid!) There is virtually no telephone service and our internet is only available for extreme emergencies. Our Main House was built in 1952 and retains the flavor of the 50’s. It houses a kitchen, dining hall, a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Our log-built Lodge overlooks the Klamath River with 3 bedrooms, a full kitchen, bathroom and wrap-around covered porch. Our Pumpkin & Blue Cottages each sleep 4-5 people. They are close to the double Yellow Shower house and toilets, and they have hot and cold running water, a propane cooktop, and a wood stove for heat. We do NOT have refrigeration, and our solar batteries or generator provides us lights at night. Campers who use our Cottages may use their own sleeping bags, but we have beds with mattresses and pillows and clean bedding. We also have an Upper Barn bedroom and half-bath rental. Our two-story Riverview Yurt appeals to folks who want a full kitchen, a private shower and flush toilet overlooking the Klamath river from our 50 x 50 foot upper deck. Luscious to sit outside and watch the river flow by during the day, and to let the water lull you to sleep at night. For families (up to 8), folks who like to fish, or old friends who just want a very special get-away. Each of our six campsites have a picnic table and a fire pit. Our Maple River, Grotto River and Pepperwood River sites overlook the gorgeous Klamath River. Our Morning Meadow, Orchard Meadow, and Deer Meadow sites are close to our 5 acre meadow where blacktail deer graze in the evenings. We have a Yellow double Shower House with two separate sides, each with a toilet, sink and shower and on demand hot water, so folks don't have to wait. There's also a new Camp Shower at the corner of the orchard for our campers, along with two outhouses for camper use, one at the bottom of the road down to the meadow, and another in the woods just past Deer Meadow Camp. Feel free to pee outside (with discretion if there are other campers present)! For solid waste, please use the appropriate accommodations. Please be considerate of others. We see lots of wildlife; silver foxes, a bald eagle and a family of river otters downstream, vultures, blue heron, occasionally an osprey will fly overhead clutching a freshly caught salmon and call to each other to brag about it! There are rare sightings of timid black bears who run from humans, but sometimes can be seen grazing in the meadow with the black-tail deer. We're surrounded by old logging trails made by the lumber companies 80 years ago when they clear cut the old growth redwood on our side of the mountain, and now it's completely reforested with 200 ft tall Doug Fir, Madrone, Cedar, Oak, other pine species and Pepper wood trees, and we have written permission from the Green Diamond company to allow guest to hike on their adjacent properties.

Humboldt Hideaway

3 sites · Lodging, Tents10 acres · Blue Lake, CA
Humboldt hideaway is a small intimate SHARED space with residents. The outdoor kitchen, deck with a view, and campfire ring are all connected to the main resident house. There are places of seclusion, but much of it is shared outdoor space. Humboldt Hideaway is a small off-the-grid LGBTQ+ queer land project in Northern California. It is set on 12 acres of hilly terrain in the mixed fir and oak woods of Humboldt County, a half-hour east of Arcata. Back in 2001, when it was established, it was undeveloped with nothing on it. It has since been built up with the scrappy efforts of amateur creative dreamers. It is a home and resource to extended LGBTQ+ communities by being a small-scale rural resource for learning and sharing useful rural living skills and being a destination for visits, artist and activist retreats, and host to small groups and events. Anyone is welcome at Humboldt Hideaway, but please understand that it is an intentional place committed to anti-oppression values. It is important that it remain a safer space for people identifying as queer and/or transgender, as well as a supportive space for women and people of color to freely be. Please make sure you do not anticipate any concerns/problems with this. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: The property is conveniently located midway between the coast/redwoods and the Trinity River/Trinity Alps backpacking. It is a 45 minute drive to the coast of Trinidad, which has some of the most lovely coves and beaches and Patrick's Point State Park. It is a half hour drive to the coastal Ma-le'l dunes. And it is a half hour drive inland to swimming holes on the Trinity River. OFF-THE-GRID: The place is off-the-grid, no internet, only limited solar power, an on-demand propane water heater, and heated by woodstoves. Structures are a combination of natural building, salvaged, and new materials, with a mix of low-tech alternative technologies- all built with lots of love and help from friends. BOOKING A GROUP: There is potentially both cabin space and camping spots. The property can accommodate a group of up to 10 people. If you wish to book a group, please get in touch and we'll have you book all of the spaces- including some that are not currently listed, as they are in the shared lodge space. WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY: There is a guest room in the shared lodge space if you want to have a wheelchair accessible room. The lodge has a ramp for accessible entrance. This room is not listed, but get in touch if you want to book it.

Cozy Callahan Cabin Full Bed Studio

1 site · Lodging10 acres · Etna, CA
Learn more about this land:The Cabin is a place to unplug & unwind. In fact, it's hardly camping at all. If you're looking for a perfect space loaded with technology, this isn't the listing for you. If you want to hear the wind whistling through 100 acres of pines, oaks and little else, keep reading. The windows are wonky, the flooring is worse, but the cozy full bed, infrared stove, sweet kitchenette, and surrounding quiet will charm you from the first hello. Finish reading (or writing!) your novel, bring your knitting/sewing, yoga mat, & relax. The outdoor deck is perfect for morning coffee before you hit a hiking trail, go paddle boarding, or spend the day otherwise unplugged. Inside the cabin there's a cafe table begging for offline computer work, sewing a quilt, working on a puzzle, or simply enjoying a meal. The kitchenette features a fridge-combo-stove with 2 electric burners for cooking and a mini-fridge sized fridge, small freezer included. Wash up in the single sink, and enjoy the standard sized shower stall, and of course use the toilet. Our home's corner is 10 feet away from the cabin. This means that you'll hear us potentially get ready for school in the morning, barely hear me all day as I work from home during the day, and probably notice when the kids get home from school in the afternoon. We are lights out by 10 pm every day of the week if not earlier, and our two kids are normal, well-behaved kids that will respect your privacy as we hope you will respect ours.Trinity Lake is about an hour's drive, Kangaroo Lake is 40 minutes, Mt. Shasta an hour plus or minus 15 minutes depending on summer versus winter conditions, and the town of Etna is only 12 minutes. Historic Callahan is only 5 minutes away, and Fort Jones is 27 minutes. Our driveway is easily accessible nearly every day of the year in a Honda Accord (minus the rare, heavy snowfall).
