Just off Interstate 5, about an hour south of Bakersfield and just outside of Lebec, Frazier Park is a good base for exploring spots such as Fort Tejon State Historic Park, Mt Pinos, Alamo Mountain, and elsewhere Los Padres National Forest. There are a ton of hiking trails and recreation areas in the vicinity, including the nearby McGill Campground, which offers a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served RV and tent camping along with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Note that many area campgrounds close for winter, but you’ll find Hipcamps available year-round.

You'll find our amenities and activities puposefully sparse here. Upon booking, there are about 5 miles of dirt road on the property that you are welcome to explore on foot or by bicycle. Rustic is the theme here. There is no shower, no wifi, and no electricity available, but you will enjoy your own private spigot and the cellular service is acceptable. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.** Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. Be sure to check the Google for distance to Cuyama Valley, and your dates for availability and site descriptions. I had an absolutely wonderful and truly unique experience at Josh & Jessica’s Tent Camp @ Working Ostrich Ranch! From the moment I arrived, the hosts made me feel right at home. They were incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable, offering clear instructions and being very accessible throughout my stay. Their attention to detail really showed, especially in how they prioritize the safety of the magnificent ostriches—this is definitely not a petting zoo! It's a real, working ranch, and the rules in the description are there to keep both guests and animals safe. The elder rancher is a fountain of knowledge—his stories and insights were fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him. It was clear that he has a deep respect and understanding of the land and animals. My campsite was tucked away in a peaceful corner by the archery range—an ideal spot for stargazing under the open sky and listening to the enchanting sounds of the surrounding wildlife. I loved the rustic charm of the site, which offered a sense of solitude while still feeling completely safe and well-maintained. I’m already planning to return for a longer stay next time. I’d love to take the ranch tour and maybe even try an archery lesson! If you're looking for a memorable and peaceful camping experience at an authentic working farm, I highly recommend this spot. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind HipCamp.

This place was just what we were looking for. A quiet getaway in a beautiful setting. There is a farm and our toddler loved seeing the goats, chickens and donkey. We were shown great hospitality from the host and made us feel at home. Great hikes right outside the door! We were even able to purchase some meat and eggs from the farm! We had a small group come up to Nathan's ranch for my sister's birthday, and we rented out two of the glamping sites. We had so much fun, and it was awesome being away from the city with such amazing views. Seriously, the mountains were insane, and I don't think I've ever seen the Milky Way so clearly. Nathan was lovely, as are the animals—everyone should do the petting zoo. Definitely bring your earplugs if you're in Pink Pony #1 (the rooster is an early riser!) We'll be back for sure :)

Los Padres National Forest

Stretching out for nearly 2 million acres of land in central and Southern California (nearly half of which is wilderness), Los Padres National Forest offers a lot of space for camping, hiking, climbing, and swimming in warmer months along with snow sports come winter. Los Padres also offers some fantastic wildlife-viewing opportunities, providing habitats for species ranging from California condors to bighorn sheep.

The Mojave Desert

If you're in the mood for a change of scenery, you need only head into the Mojave Desert, where you'll find natural features unlike anywhere else on earth. The most popular destinations include Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Mojave National Preserve.

Sequoia National Forest

Northeast of Frazier Park, the Sequoia National Forest is full of ways to experience nature, with lots of campgrounds and backcountry camping options. The forest is also home to over three dozen groves of massive sequoia trees.

When to go

Frazier Park is at its most popular in the summer months, when temperatures soar into the 90s and families descend on the area to take advantage of school holidays, so come in September if you want pleasant weather without the crowds. Unlike much of Los Padres National Forest, Frazier Park doesn't get too much snow, though winters can be rainy and chilly, with lows below freezing and highs in the mid-50s from December through February.
