Imagine a place where the songs of red wing blackbirds fill the air. A place where you can see as far as the ocean to the west, the mountains of Humboldt County to the north, the Mendocino National Forest to the east, and the mountains of Sonoma County to the south. This is Red Wing Ranch.
While staying at Red Wing Ranch you will have the opportunity to walk on a section of the original stagecoach road, canoe in our private pond, watch the sunset over the Pacific ocean, and star gaze from what feels like a private planetarium. This is perfect for artists, writers, yogis, and those seeking the tranquility of off grid living. We have 40 acres of land with beautiful hiking in every direction. Our campsites have a fire pit, picnic table, and access to an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen!
The accommodation includes staying in a 850 square foot wooden yurt with bamboo floors. The building has a wooden stove and propane wall heat. We also have a fridge, stove for cooking and propane wall heater inside the yurt. There is a futon that sleeps 2 plus a kids size bed, but please bring sleeping bags or bedding. You can also put up two tents next to the yurt for more sleeping.
We have now added also an attached kitchen and bathroom to the yurt so we have an indoor shower and full kitchen!
There is a detached bathroom with a maintenance free composting toilet and simple outdoor kitchen. You will have access to cooking utensils and cookware, camp stove, and fire pit. There is a solar system so you have access to electricity and wifi.
The drive from Willits is 25 minutes, with only the last 5 minutes on a dirt road. You can do the drive in any car, unless the occasional snowy conditions. There is plenty of parking next to the yurt for easy unpacking.. To access the coast you do have to go back through Willits and use highway 20.

We're in a wooded country neighborhood where lots of folks have dogs, so you might hear some barking and see some neighbors. Very occasionally we see a dog off leash. We ask that you keep your dogs on leash at all times, as we have cats and chickens.
We encourage you to enjoy the forest, but do be aware that there is poison oak. If you don't know what it looks like we can show you.
Arrive anytime after 1pm. Check out is at noon, but you can often stay later if we don't have other campers arriving to your site.

We loved camping on Hillary's land at the Lucky Penny Hipcamp. We had lots of space, the land is forested (pines, madrones and Douglas-firs), and shady. We were there in early October, and she let us pick ripe apples and figs from her fruit trees. The water supply is very good. They have a composting toilet, which is clean, well-decorated with art, and well-constructed. The showers are solar-heated and rustic, but a shower felt great! Our female black Labrador is very well-behaved, and so she went off-leash a lot and enjoyed exploring and playing in the woods. Hillary has 2 or 3 free-ranging cats, so be aware of that. Also, the native vegetation has poison oak, so watch out! We're immune, so we had a great time. Note: We had trouble finding the driveway, beacuse Hillary's house was the landmark, and we couldn't see it because it's hidden behind a redwood tree.

This was our second time here and honestly it was even better than the last. Heidi and Matt are so responsive and sweet and make the experience so wonderful and seamless every time. We had some first time campers with us and even they loved it. This property is just so amazing and perfect for having a beautiful weekend to share with friends in raw nature. I can’t recommend this stay enough! The site and spending time in the river is the absolute best although I HIGHLY recommend checking your tires before summitting the rough terrain and steep hills of the property. We got a little stuck but were able to maneuver our way out from the river. Despite that I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend in such a beautiful and serene location. We’ll definitely be back next year too!

We were so LUCKY to find Lucky Penny for our recent camping trip! I wanted to take my two young girls on one last summer adventure, and it was the perfect choice. The drive from the Bay Area was easy, and we were absolutely delighted by the property and all its amenities.
The campsite was perfect—complete with benches, a table, and even a toy shed right there for the kids. The showers were spacious with plenty of hot water, and the toilets were clean and easy to use. The highlight for us was the incredible outdoor kitchen, surrounded by fruit trees and blackberry bushes that kept my little ones happily occupied.
Hillary and her partner were so warm and welcoming, offering great suggestions for nearby swimming spots. We also loved the option to purchase fresh eggs and organic pressed apple juice—my kids were thrilled!
We can’t wait to come back next summer.

We loved tent camping at the Hillside site! It was extremely quiet and private and the views were incredible. The last 20ish minutes of the drive up to the property were on a dirt/gravel road and the Hillside site was doable in a large 4WD but felt like off-roading. The pond wasn’t swimmable but fishing from the canoe they have was so fun. There is no shade at the Hillside site past mid-morning so we’d highly suggest a shade tent or umbrella of some kind. I believe they had a couple umbrellas but there wasn’t a base for one at the Hillside site. Wasps were also an issue when cooking, but that wasn’t surprising this time of year. The hosts were incredibly kind and generous. We learned so much from them and even received recommendations for local spots to visit, eat and swim. There is no spigot or hose for water, just a couple jugs available which ran out when the other family camping finished them off. They weren’t replaced for our second night there and the sink with running water didn’t work the few times we tried to do dishes, but luckily we brought our own water and had enough for the rest of the weekend. Overall, we would definitely recommend for a peaceful weekend and great place to call home for the night after exploring the surrounding towns and nature. It’s clear they put a lot of love and effort into their property and educating the community and are ironing out kinks as they continue to grow the space!

Hillary’s land was perfect for our campervan stay. It was quiet and shady, with lots of space. Our site was a two minute walk (through beautiful woods) to the communal kitchen, with great facilities. The outdoor shower was wonderful to use in the hot weather. Hillary was helpful with directions and recommendations for local swimming holes and hikes.

We had a fabulous time at Jack Rabbit ranch. The site was breathtaking and we really had all the privacy we wanted. It was a great spot to just get away. Communication was clear and timely. All wheel or four wheel drive with some ground clearance will make getting to the site much easier. We hope to come back for another stay!

Absolutely magical. We stayed at Brandon’s Hipcamp property for 6 days with a group of 9 (including 2 kids, 2 teens, and 3 dogs), and it was nothing short of amazing. The property is spacious, peaceful, and perfectly secluded—exactly what we needed for a true digital detox. The views are stunning, the air is fresh, and the quiet is the kind that resets your soul.
Our group—rambunctious and varied as it is—felt completely at home. The kids had space to roam and explore, the teens found their own pockets of peace, and the dogs were in heaven. It’s rare to find a place that feels this welcoming to both kids and pets.
The hot tub was a favorite—especially in the evenings when the stars came out and the only sound was the wind through the trees. Pure bliss.
Brandon went above and beyond, not only helping us pre-shop for groceries (including the most delicious farm-fresh eggs we’ve ever had), but also cooking a multi-course dinner that everyone—from picky eaters to foodies—raved about. His stories and knowledge of the property’s history added so much depth to our experience.
We came looking for a retreat and left feeling refreshed, connected, and already dreaming about our return. If you’re looking for a quiet, beautiful, family- and dog-friendly escape with a host who truly cares—this is the spot.

My god. What can i say about heidi and matts little slice of heaven that they haven’t already covered. First. The view.. spectacular! The stars. Oh wow. The peace and quiet. Unmatched. We had a couple hickups there. One being my truck had just had a tom of work done and on our third day something happened, truck wouldn’t start. Matt(certified mechanic) was on it. Took him 30 minutes to get her running. Told me what issue was and what to get once i got off the mountain. He said no charge but he SAVED us and for that we took care of him(hopefully matt😂). We will be back again. Just not with a one ton truck with no 4wd. Kudos to Heidi and Matt. Your place is magical.

Hilary’s property was amazing, the amenities were all in great shape and the campsites themselves were beautiful. The area is decorated perfectly and her attention to detail in the shared spaces was noticed. There are many adorable cats roaming the property.
