The road to get there is two and a half miles up the mountain, the first mile is paved and the other mile and a half is gravel. In the surrounding area you can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, surfing, beachcombing, birdwatching, and countless other outdoor activities. French Hill Trail is a few more miles up the mountain road. The campsites have picnic tables and fire rings, and campers are provided with 5 gallons of potable water. An outdoor, COLD-water Artesian shower, out in the open mountain air with the wild things and an outhouse with a compost toilet are also provided. Bundles of firewood are available for an extra charge when you book your campsite. The campsites are set within a deciduous and pine forest at about 1913 feet in elevation. There is a pond on the property, but its purpose is for wildlife habitat ONLY, so water activities are NOT allowed. NO swimming, NO fishing, NO boating, NO trapping, etc. The wild things live here! The property owner has a dog, three cats, and a menagerie of yard birds such as turkeys, peacocks, guinea hens, chickens, ducks, geese, etc. They do make noise! Kirk has lived off-grid for over twenty years and holds a wealth of information about the Gasquet/Del Norte County area. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the property is that it has had documented Sasquatch encounters over the past twenty years that have been published in "Tribal Bigfoot" (D. Paulides 2009). Located on the Yurok reservation right on the Klamath River just outside Orick, CA, we are "off the grid", through a Redwood forest and over a mountain down into the Klamath River valley. We have a 5 acre meadow, and orchard with 50 trees, peaches pears, apples, cherries, plums, pluots, apricots and grapes. We are right on the Klamath river. It's a great place to come and recharge your internal batteries. There is no cellphone service and none of our sites have internet service. Our Main House was built in 1952 and retains the flavor of the 50’s. It houses a kitchen, dining hall, a living room, two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Our log-built Lodge overlooks the Klamath River with 3 bedrooms, a full kitchen, bathroom and wrap-around covered porch. Our Pumpkin and Blue Cottages. They are close to the double Yellow Shower house and toilets, and they have hot and cold running water, a propane cooktop, and a wood stove for heat. We do NOT have refrigeration, and our solar batteries or generator provides us lights at night. Campers who use our Cottages may use their own sleeping bags, but we have beds with mattresses and pillows and clean bedding. We also have an Upper Barn bedroom and half-bath rental. Our two-story Riverview Yurt appeals to folks who want a full kitchen, a private shower and flush toilet overlooking the Klamath river from our 50 x 50 foot upper deck. Luscious to sit outside and watch the river flow by during the day, and to let the water lull you to sleep at night. Our Maple River, Grotto River and Pepperwood River sites overlook the gorgeous Klamath River. Our Morning Meadow, Orchard Meadow, and Deer Meadow sites are close to our 5 acre meadow where blacktail deer graze in the evenings. We have a Yellow double Shower House with two separate sides, each with a toilet, sink and shower and on demand hot water, so folks don't have to wait. There's also a new Camp Shower at the corner of the orchard for our campers, along with two outhouses for camper use, one at the bottom of the road down to the meadow, and another in the woods just past Deer Meadow Camp. We see lots of wildlife; silver foxes, a bald eagle and a family of river otters downstream, vultures, blue heron, occasionally an osprey will fly overhead clutching a freshly caught salmon and call to each other to brag about it! There are rare sightings of timid black bears who run from humans, but sometimes can be seen grazing in the meadow with the black-tail deer. We're surrounded by old logging trails made by the lumber companies 80 years ago when they clear cut the old growth redwood on our side of the mountain, and now it's completely reforested with 200 ft tall Doug Fir, Madrone, Cedar, Oak, other pine species and Pepper wood trees, and we have written permission from the Green Diamond company to allow guest to hike on their adjacent properties.

Coming from the North, GPS may drop you a few driveways away as that is the property line. Keep driving about another 1/8th mile until you see the large red "Cornerstone Ranch" sign. That is our driveway. Welcome... The ranch offers 6 different campsites. Campfires are allowed (outside of burn bans), and there is a toilet in off season and Port-A-Potties during the summer on site as well. 4 nights at Azalea River

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Jacob's Riverside Gem! It's rustic enough to feel adventurous and homey enough to feel warm and comfy in the winter. It's obvious that Jacob has put a lot of heart and soul into this little cabin because of all the artistic touches you will find throughout. The firewood was well stocked, the property was beautiful with many fresh fungi to observe, and the little kitchen was perfect for making delicious meals. The fridge is quite small with no freezer, so if you want to bring fresh food for cooking, I recommend bringing a cooler. The shower is not far from the cabin, so it's easy to get a hot shower in and run back inside to the warm cabin. Make sure to bring your own bath towel. The bathroom is farther from the cabin, but I enjoyed the walk there, especially at night when I could look at the stars. We didn't get to enjoy the outdoor space very much, seeing as we visited in winter, but we definitely want to come back in the summer to enjoy all that this little cabin and the Smith River area has to offer. If you're looking for a quaint place to stay while adventuring in the area, you've found the right place!

Weekend Trip to The Swimming Hole On Red Cap Creek

We ended up being the only campers on an early November day, so Wayne graciously let us choose whichever site we liked. We pitched our tent right by the communal fire pit and picnic tables instead of a designated site. The ground was easy to drive stakes into, and Wayne even offered more substantial stakes in case they were needed. His sweet dog (Cowboy) and horse (Coco) paid some very welcome visits. They're sneaky for treats, so watch your back! ;) A hose is nearby that supplies filtered fresh spring water, and the toilet room is very convenient. The hot showers were down due to some construction, but we enjoyed our stay a lot! We would recommend this place as a nice getaway, or as a stop on your way to the redwoods or Eureka (we did both).

This was a great place for us as we camp in a very large tent. It was peaceful, close to town and Bonnie was very responsive and welcoming. We enjoyed hearing the horses and chickens throughout the day. Our dog loved the grassy area in around our site.

What a gorgeous spot!! Easy to find. Several areas to enjoy ourselves. Huge area for the dogs to run and play. Lots of shade. Wonderful view of the river from the deck. Comfortable seating in several places. Property is very well kept. Even the outhouse was the cleanest I’ve ever been into! Can’t wait to find the time to go again !!

Really enjoyed our time camping at Patti's. She has a beautiful soul. The "locals" were wonderfully helpful and a joy to be around as well. The location is equidistant to the gem of the Redwoods amongst other attractions. If you have well behaved dogs that love swimming, the within walking distance Klamath River offers a shoreline for fetching, fishing or just enjoying the view. The nearby Yoruke Tribe store/gas station offers basics, but Crescent City is only a scenic 20 mile drive away. A great camping location!

5 nights at Camp Jade River

Absolutely the best place to camp - hands down my ALL TIME NEW FAVORITE! Beautiful area, gorgeous river, lots of trees for shade, enough room to fit a huge family reunion of people comfortably and we only had 5. Yes the path down to the river was tricky, not difficult if you are steady on your feet but if you are not, you may find the path troublesome. I found the little outhouse to be scarier than the river trail. If you have your own portable toilet, bring it. It will save you lots of scary moments with spiders and bees. The only thing I wish we would of had but didn't, were some SOLAR LIGHTS to put up along the path down to the deck. It would have made the walk much easier in the dark. All in all, it was a wonderful 6 days! Looking forward to booking my spot again for next year soon as I don't wanna miss out on camping here again. I'm sure as soon as word gets out how great it is here, booking a week-long reservation will be hard to do! Thank you Tyler for sharing your amazing property with us. We made some awesome memories! It was an unforgetable adventure!

1 night at Azalea River

Jacob has really put in a labor of love on this land to help his guests, rest, reset and connect. Being able to take a shower outside and hike down and wade the waters of the river was unbelievable. It rained most of the time I was there so I didn't get to take advantage of the river much but the cabin was a cozy safe haven to cook dinner and brew my morning coffee in. I loved that I could camp there and then drive 25minutes and be hiking in the Jedidiah Smith Redwoods area. Close enough off the 101 you can really use it as a stop like I did however I can see how staying longer would mean even more glory along the river. The cons are I found some metal scraps and screws on the ground walking around; just beware if you have kiddos. The hike down is well designed but it's definitely moderate and can be slippery. The ladder up the bed is not for the faint of heart!

Where to go

The California Redwoods

Crescent City makes a great base for exploring the redwood Forest, named for the mammoth species of trees that dominate here, some of which are over a thousand years old. Here you can cruise along the 32-mile Avenue of the Giants to get great views of the forest, hike along the quiet Tall Trees Grove Trail, or even drive your car through a hollowed-out tree.

The California Coast Ranges

The coastal mountains inland from Crescent City Range offer ample opportunities for camping and backpacking, with a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests interspersed with streams and lakes. Much of the northern part of the range is preserved as the Klamath National Forest and the Six River National Forest.

Oregon's South Coast

Crescent City is less than a half-hour drive from the border with Oregon and offers easy access to what's arguably the prettiest stretch of the state's dramatic coastline. Spots worth visiting include the gorgeous Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor and the city of Coos Bay, known for its ample crabbing opportunities.

When to go

Crescent City has a temperate climate, with highs in the mid-50s in winter and in the mid-60s in summer. Winters here are considerably rainier than in the summer months, however, with an average of 14 days of rain in December and barely any showers at all in July and August. If you plan to hike or camp in the nearby redwoods, and don’t want to deal with summer crowds, consider visiting in September or early October.
