It's easy to get stoked about Great Sand Dunes National Park. Outdoor lovers come from across the country to see the jaw-dropping dune field that covers 30 square miles. Hike the tallest dunes on the continent—the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Blanca Peak are worth the climb.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try sandboarding or sand sledding down the dunes. (Get your rental gear in Alamosa). Afterward, cool down in refreshing Medano Creek. After a day in the dunes, pitch a tent on the sand—all you need is a backpacking permit. The park also boasts a developed campground, Pinon Flats.

Keep in mind the dunes can get swamped in the summer. For a less crowded alternative, check out San Luis Lake State Park. The secluded campground has RV sites and tent sites but remember to BYOW (bring your own wood).

For stunning views of the dune field, Zapata Falls Campground is your best bet. This rustic state camping area's 9,000-foot elevation promises sweeping vistas of rugged Colorado terrain. Keep in mind all sites are first-come, first-served.

On the other side of Alamosa, you find Rio Grande National Forest. Here, you can enjoy hiking trails and tent camping amid densely wooded hills. You can even catch some dinner at Terrace Reservoir.

Around Alamosa, a huge range of RV parks, rustic tent camps, and decked out cabins are available. Some are just steps from the Rio Grande, which cuts through the city. Whatever your camping style, it's easy to find the perfect spot within minutes of the area's state and national parks.

We have 1.75 acres.  The history of this property is interesting, varied and historical.  During WWII the property was used as a detainment camp for German POW's.  They were transferred here from Trinidad and Walsenburg CO to work with the farmers in the community, working potatoes.  It was a happy, fruitful work situation and some of the farmers/POW's became good friends, even traveling to visit each other after the war.  Parts of the building are still there. Serendipity.  The land has served as an auto junk yard, repair shop, metal scrap yard, thrift store and more.  As we have worked on the property we have found many treasures that are working their way to the surface.   The location of the property we feel is perfect.  You can get everywhere from here.  We are in the city of Monte Vista limits, town is walking distance.  It sits in the middle of what makes the valley thrive.  Farming (Cows & hay) to the East.  There is also a beautiful view of Mt Blanca and the Sange de Christo mountain range.  When the sun sets you understand the beauty of the mountain and understand why is was named Blood of Christ. There is one fire pit for now, but working on others.  Some firewood is provide.  There are picnic tables in the community area and we are moving toward a working community kitchen.  We are still doing improvements and setup but would love to have you stay with us.  We welcome feedback.  There are 2 porta potties and some non-potable water to use.  For now, come and set up camp where you please.  The tents are not ready yet as we need to glamp them up a little.  Will get them listed as soon as they are ready,  We do allow pets, on leash in the campground.  One of the other amenities we are building is an agility dog park that will be available to campers and members from the community.

Great Sand Dunes are visible from every site. With unlimited mountain views, beautiful starry night skies, come see the Milky Way, Eclipse, even Meteor showers!!! History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on. Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message. Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes. We are closed for the season. PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY The Rabbit Hole Ranch offers beautiful night skies with little to no light pollution and unobstructed views of the majestic Blanca Massif. The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive. Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like. Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! Returning this season is 12 year old KayLee, also a GP and and Finn, our little dude from Alaska. Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm. Please be advise that trucks and four-wheel vehicles will have a much easier time navigating these roads. Other vehicles may need to slow down and take it easy through some potentially rough areas. It's easy to get stoked about Great Sand Dunes National Park. Outdoor lovers come from across the country to see the jaw-dropping dune field that covers 30 square miles. Hike the tallest dunes on the continent—the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Blanca Peak are worth the climb.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try sandboarding or sand sledding down the dunes. (Get your rental gear in Alamosa). Afterward, cool down in refreshing Medano Creek. After a day in the dunes, pitch a tent on the sand—all you need is a backpacking permit. The park also boasts a developed campground, Pinon Flats.

Keep in mind the dunes can get swamped in the summer. For a less crowded alternative, check out San Luis Lake State Park. The secluded campground has RV sites and tent sites but remember to BYOW (bring your own wood).

For stunning views of the dune field, Zapata Falls Campground is your best bet. This rustic state camping area's 9,000-foot elevation promises sweeping vistas of rugged Colorado terrain. Keep in mind all sites are first-come, first-served.

On the other side of Alamosa, you find Rio Grande National Forest. Here, you can enjoy hiking trails and tent camping amid densely wooded hills. You can even catch some dinner at Terrace Reservoir.

Around Alamosa, a huge range of RV parks, rustic tent camps, and decked out cabins are available. Some are just steps from the Rio Grande, which cuts through the city. Whatever your camping style, it's easy to find the perfect spot within minutes of the area's state and national parks.

We have 1.75 acres.  The history of this property is interesting, varied and historical.  During WWII the property was used as a detainment camp for German POW's.  They were transferred here from Trinidad and Walsenburg CO to work with the farmers in the community, working potatoes.  It was a happy, fruitful work situation and some of the farmers/POW's became good friends, even traveling to visit each other after the war.  Parts of the building are still there. Serendipity.  The land has served as an auto junk yard, repair shop, metal scrap yard, thrift store and more.  As we have worked on the property we have found many treasures that are working their way to the surface.   The location of the property we feel is perfect.  You can get everywhere from here.  We are in the city of Monte Vista limits, town is walking distance.  It sits in the middle of what makes the valley thrive.  Farming (Cows & hay) to the East.  There is also a beautiful view of Mt Blanca and the Sange de Christo mountain range.  When the sun sets you understand the beauty of the mountain and understand why is was named Blood of Christ. History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on. We are closed for the season. PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY The Rabbit Hole Ranch offers beautiful night skies with little to no light pollution and unobstructed views of the majestic Blanca Massif. The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive. Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like. Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! A great day trip is hiking from Mosca Pass to the Visitor center at Great Sand Dunes ,explore the creek and dunes down there and then trek back up to your car at Mosca Pass.About a 8.5 mile round trip. Decent cell phone reception here at camp.We have wifi available . Easy and nice bikerides right from camp. ,Camps have fire circles and grill for firepit. .Plenty of mowed grassy areas for the kids. Well behaved pets on or.off a leash are welcome . Be mindfull that your pet does not chase or harrass potential livestock.on neighbor's property . Grassy tent site,near power and water. Pit toilet. We invite you to not only be prepared for this, but to lean into the experience as this unique high alpine environment can be one of the most inspiring and epic places on earth. We are currently fixing up what is already on the property for an eco-experiential retreat as well as a space for like minded artists to take refuge and create magic on the land. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable. ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST. No fireworks are permitted at any time.

Tin Can Camp: Adventure Base

Nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley at the entrance to Penitente Canyon and Special Recreation Management Area and 50 minutes to Great Sand Dunes National Park, San Luis Valley Great Outdoors welcomes all guests to come and enjoy their cabins at Tin Can Camp. Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest. The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, an incinerator toilet, and a covered porch. Incinerating toilets are self-contained waste management systems that burn human waste instead of flushing it into a sewer or septic system. These toilets use propane gas to incinerate waste at high temperatures, reducing it to a small amount of sterile ash. Incinerating toilets are commonly used in locations where traditional plumbing is impractical, such as remote cabins and environmentally sensitive areas. They are valued for their efficiency, minimal environmental impact, and the elimination of the need for water or chemical treatments. There is odor associated with the incineration process. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Guest should plan 2 gallons of water per person per day. A public well/pumphouse is at the intersection of County Road 38A and Road 40G (37.836363, -106.271551)(inoperable as of 7/11/2024- BLM working to fix it). Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood. As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp! Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area. Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

Coyote Canyon Mountain Base Camp

As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. We brought out wolf pup 16bhsbl travel trailer out to camps the site is huge with plenty of space for 2-3 other families. The directions were easy to follow, however there was one sign that was missing as per the written instructions. One of our party members missed the gate because of the missing sign. The entrance to the camp sign was a little rutted out and you should feel comfortable off roading with a trailer.

This place was great! So thoughtfully designed -- even though there aren't any trees, the campsites are situated so that you can't really see one another when you're in your little space. Lots of little touches, like the lights along the pathway, a nice playground in the park, the cantina in the middle, make it a really pleasant stay. And the showers! Very very nice showers. The host, Adam, was really friendly and accommodating, and we had a really nice stay the very last day of the season. Will definitely return!

We had a great time staying out here this past weekend. It was very windy and rainy, but that is to be expected. The property is very calming and open, which is great for the astrophotography we were able to take. Clouds made it difficult, but that isn't Christine's fault! The water from the pump is very rusty, and we opted not to drink/use it. However, there is a Dollar General 6 miles up the road, so it was no big deal! Would definitely recommend staying here.

Nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley at the entrance to Penitente Canyon and Special Recreation Management Area and 50 minutes to Great Sand Dunes National Park, San Luis Valley Great Outdoors welcomes all guests to come and enjoy their cabins at Tin Can Camp. Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest. The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, an incinerator toilet, and a covered porch. Incinerating toilets are self-contained waste management systems that burn human waste instead of flushing it into a sewer or septic system. These toilets use propane gas to incinerate waste at high temperatures, reducing it to a small amount of sterile ash. Incinerating toilets are commonly used in locations where traditional plumbing is impractical, such as remote cabins and environmentally sensitive areas. They are valued for their efficiency, minimal environmental impact, and the elimination of the need for water or chemical treatments. There is odor associated with the incineration process. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Guest should plan 2 gallons of water per person per day. A public well/pumphouse is at the intersection of County Road 38A and Road 40G (37.836363, -106.271551)(inoperable as of 7/11/2024- BLM working to fix it). Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood. As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp! Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area. Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. 5 off-grid acres down the road from Great Sand Dunes National Park! The property will be marked with painted sticks, spaced about 30ft apart from one another. You will need to access the property by turning onto Highway 150, then a left onto 3rd St. Next, take the first right onto Ash St, then the first right onto 4th St. Go down the road and locate our property on the left side of the road. The approximate coordinates for the front of our lot are 37.4932, -105.6076. We recommend using Google Maps to get there. Apple Maps does not do as well with coordinates. Feel free to take your vehicle off the driveway, just be mindful of our land! There will also be a fire pit for your convenience, but do not leave any trash or food after you leave. Please make sure to put out all fires completely. Even though this is primarily a Tent site, RVs and Campers are welcome. However, there is no electricity or any water hookups on the property, but the views and privacy make up for it! You are about 15 minutes south of the Great Sand Dunes and 20 minutes from downtown Alamosa.

Feel free to bring your RV/Camper and enjoy our spacious site. It serves as an ideal basecamp for 14er hiking adventures, only 20 mins from Lake Como Rd. Currently, it accommodates Campers/RVs and tents, operating as a "PACK IN PACK OUT large campsite." Parking is convenient, with space for one large RV/camper truck and two cars. While the road leading in might be a bit rough for about a quarter mile, it's manageable. We've personally cleared the main road for easier access. Moreover, Smith Reservoir State Wildlife Area, offering great fishing, is just 15 mins away, with the town of Blanca and the main highway a mere 10 mins away. The Alamosa recreational center, providing hot showers and full gym access for $5 with a day pass, is approximately 30 mins from the campsite. The area boasts zero light pollution, making it perfect for stargazing with views stretching up to 100 miles. We're continuously improving the site, with plans for a custom fire pit, benches, and picnic tables, ensuring it remains a special place for all to enjoy.

You'll be roughly and hour away from the Great Sand Dunes National Park, 40 mins from Ft Garland, under 2 hours to Taos, NM, and Mountain Home Reservoir is just down the road - great fishing!
