At Stave Lake Campground, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful nature of interior southwest Nova Scotia. With only 5 sites, the campground offers a peaceful, back-country style camping experience dispersed amongst old growth hemlock, spruce, and maple with access to associated hiking trails around Stave Lake. With a canoe or kayak, the campground provides a great starting place for exploring the adjacent Tobeatic and Medway Lakes Wilderness Areas.
The campground is also a 10-minute drive from Kejimkujik National Park with dozens of maintained hiking trails, old-growth forest, and canoe and kayak rentals, and only 5 minutes from the 4-mile stillwater trail, a beautiful waterfront trail managed by the MCFC.
The Stave Lake Campground is operated by the Medway Community Forest Cooperative. Our mission is to support local communities through sustainable and ecologically based forest management. One way we strive to meet our mission is to manage the forest to maximize multiple economic, social, and environmental values - The Medway Community Forest Campground allows us to diversify revenue sources while protecting provincially recognized old-growth forest that surrounds a portion of Stave Lake!
The campground is a backcountry style camping experience with front country access. The farthest sites are about 500 meters from the parking lot. Gear must be carried in!
The campground has outhouses, firewood available for pre-purchase, and bear hangs for storing food.
Each campsite has a firepit, picnic table, and tent pad.
There is a lovely trail system associated with the campground. We recommend waterproof hiking boots as water pools in some spots!
Only firewood purchased at the campground is allowed in accordance with the Provincial “Don’t Move Firewood” campaign.
Campfires are permitted in accordance with provincial regulations. Campers must be aware of and follow the burning restrictions updated daily at https://novascotia.ca/burnsafe/.

It was sold to a man who started renovations for a summer house but ended up listing it for sale. I purchased it and completely renovated the 100-year-old house. The site was simple and very nice, high above a tributary to Barney’s River. Unfortunately there were plenty of mosquitoes following the rain the day before.

Extraordinary in every way. The site has so much to offer - great outdoor kitchen set up with grill, propane 4 burner cook top, running water…. Hot water outdoor shower, bathroom with flush toilet. Platform that you can pull your trailer right up to, or set your tent up on. Campfire area with wood, hammock, picnic table, screen room with chairs and small table…. AND it all looks out on one of the loveliest and most peaceful harbors I’ve experienced. Oh, and I forgot to mention a launch if you’re there to kayak! Jeffrey and his family are fabulous hosts. Friendly, but honor your privacy as well. Jeffrey is a great resource on the area, the islands, and local history. This was our 1st HipCamp experience, what a great start! We did not want to leave!

Dan was very kind and the space is nice and quiet. I will say, when it says "Off the Grid", you better believe so, the nearest groceries is at Advocate Harbour around 15min away in the car. The space is quiet and quite in the middle of the woods, I even saw a couple of deer. Finally, I would just flag that it is better appropiate for a 4x4 or an all wheel drive. My car, which is none, was able to access the space but not without some hesitation and precautions.

We loved camping here in our truck bed camper. Beautiful location and very private. There are a few campsites but you couldn’t see anyone else from Campsite #1. The view was beautiful of the water. The outhouse was very clean as well.

It was great camping at site #3. Beautiful little spot in the woods with a view of the bay. Very private site which was just what we were looking for. A well maintained outhouse and firewood provided at the site were a huge bonus.
