The best camping near Enderby with snow sports

·

At the top of the Okanagan region, wrapped by the ribbon-like curves of the slow-flowing Shuswap River, sits the charming town of Enderby. Surrounded by park and farmland, its feel is decidedly rural, which makes it an ideal place to find quiet solitude when exploring its many creeks, lakes, and hiking trails. Backcountry snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and pond hockey are super popular with locals during the winter months, while golf, fishing, and any sort of watersport imaginable are on tap in summertime. Wildlife is abundant along the river’s shore so keep your eyes peeled for deer, eagles and painted turtles.

The impressive and unique bare-rock face of Enderby Cliffs was created by the Okanagan Glacier slicing through a 1,000-meter thick blanket of lava, which burst from the earth 50 million years ago. Today, the cliffs soar up 1,200 meters above the Okanagan Basin, giving hikers a hard-earned view of the sparkling Shuswap River and all the way south to Vernon. Reaching the summit takes up to three hours and is not for novice hikers.

Traditionally used as a transport route by the Splatsin First Nation, and later by European settlers and their logging mills, the Shuswap River remains an important waterway today—but for recreation rather than industry. River tubing is one of the most popular summer pastimes, with a number of different length floats available, ranging from half an hour to six hours. In July and August, River Ambassadors help campers navigate their route.

Beyond its 20th year of showing Hollywood blockbusters on its massive screen—the largest in North America—Starlight Drive-In lets you relax in the comfort of your own campervan or car. Harkening back to the 1960s and the heyday of drive-ins, this once neglected theatre on the south end of town has once again become a family favourite. On a warm summer night, road trippers can pick up some burgers and shakes in town and head here along Highway 97A.

Welcome to Cuddly Cat Farms. This property is our dream come true. Located 5 min from the city of Vernon you have fantastic views of our beautiful valley and are surrounded by Apple Orchards. We were the first people to live on this land and have built everything you see since 2017. When we arrived there were no trees on the property and we have planted some in the campsites which are quite small but will one day be large and mighty. Enjoy 20 beautiful acres just 5 minutes out of Vernon. Close proximity to Kal Lake, Swan Lake and Lake Okanagan. Fantastic hiking trails, biking trails, and watersports close by. We currently have 7 dispersed sites. These sites are set up in a ring, each with their own fire pit when there is no fire ban. There are washrooms and showers at our shop just a little hike from the sites. The water is well water and quite soft, but it is potable. The skinny taps in the washrooms do have filtered water There is potable water for washing dishes ( warm and cold) at the taps on the outside of the shop - near the entrance door for the washrooms. We live on the property as well, up on the hill. We want everyone to have a wonderful experience but do also want you to have your privacy. We venture down to the sites periodically to check but do try to stay out of the way. We look forward to hosting you!

We have a 6 acre farm in the hills of Joe Rich. It’s a beautiful combination of open meadow and mature forest, with a seasonal creek and pond. The property is full of many varieties of native plants, flowers and trees. Above the trees you can see the peaks of Little White. We also get wild animals that come to visit every now and then; bear, cougar, lynx, coyote, deer and owl to name a few. There is a communal firepit and kitchen area, central between our current campsite and other future campsites. You can enjoy hiking on the High Rim Trail nearby or maybe an off road adventure. James Lake is only 11 kms away for some summer kayaking or paddle boarding and Big White is only 1/2 hour away hosting all the summer and winter fun!. Lots of beautiful areas to explore nearby. Our location tends to be 6°-10° cooler than in Kelowna, which is a welcome treat on those warm summer days. There is also, almost always a breeze. We hope you enjoy your stay but if there’s some way we can make your stay better, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

The best camping near Enderby with snow sports guide

When to go

Cold and temperate, Enderby gets quite a bit of rainfall during the year, hence all the surrounding agriculture, with peak precipitation in November. August is the driest month, with an average temperatures of 20°C, so if you’re planning a summer camping trip, this might be the best time to go. That being said, you won’t be alone in trying to make the most of the good weather, so look at booking ahead if possible.

Know before you go

  • Set between Armstrong and Salmon Arm on Highway 97A, Enderby is about 35 kilometers north of Vernon, 80km north of Kelowna, and 130km east of Kamloops, so you have plenty of access points.
  • A handful of smaller communities in the Enderby area—Ashton Creek, Kingfisher, Grindrod, and Mara—also offer excellent access to the Shuswap River, so don’t hesitate to expand your campsite search.
  • Enderby is less than an hour's drive from one of BC's most popular ski resorts, Silver Star Mountain, and the surrounding provincial park, so consider a wintertime visit too.
