I bought this magical property 13 years ago and I have developed it from beach to mountain with the idea of sharing it with epic humans since day 1. It is 1 acre of pure natural and artistic bliss. The natural wonders include a massive beach with space for many, a gigantic sling shot, sweet fire pits, comfortable lawn chairs, paddle boards, kayaks, a cedar strip canoe, and many other toys free for you to explore. Please note that the Beach house guests have priority of the Gazebo but there are many spots/tables and parasols set up to enjoy all other spots on the beach. My property has 2 rentals on it, the other is right on the beach called "Sweet beach house-edge of the water", in case you wanted to book both locations. The artful camper boasts of an outdoor spa and deck, BBQ, mini fridge, fantastic lake and mountain views and access to the beach from 9am-8pm. The other rental a.k.a. Slocan Lake and Silverton can be accessed in just 5 minutes. There you will find ice, a laundromat, cafes, a grocery and health food store, and the lakefront. A 10-minute drive takes you to New Denver, a beautiful mountain town with access to endless world-class mountain biking, hiking trails, and mountaineering opportunities, as well as various water activities. There was a dream......come visit to learn more!! Current update: Brevity is the soul of wit!! There are some changes this season. It's been a great 5 years with Hipcamp, but the only constant is change!! So - We're open May to September this year ONLY. Otherwise, we hope to maintain the same glorious private wilderness getaway we've been providing for the past 5 years, and look forward to seeing you. I'm putting in more pear trees this year, and the orchards are growing!! I'll be upgrading all the (minimal) facilities this month. No worries!! The location is private and quiet, and you won't see any other people unless you go looking. We are dog friendly, and Finnegan the house heeler is leashed or not on a case by case basis. The riverside area is a wildlife corridor so be prepared to see deer, bears, eagles, osprey, wild turkeys, kingfishers, cedar waxwings, mountain bluebirds, the odd rare coyote/cougar, and possibly elk among others!! Generally, it's pretty quiet, but there are days...... August is peak Grizzly time, so please be bear aware.....They come here only rarely and we didn't see any on site last year, *whew* The river is perfect for swimming and diving in high water, but very cold (glacial runoff) which is amazingly refreshing, but don't count on being in it for hours. As a semi-retired chef, writer, musician, farmer, English teacher, entrepreneur and revolutionary,your host can offer impressive gourmet meals to feed body and soul -made with local organic ingredients and great conscious awareness at an agreed-upon price according to your needs. The garden is full of organic veggies, and there may be fresh venison or wild turkey if you're here in the fall. Please no hunting and no guns if you are a guest. There are amazing day and multi-day hikes within minutes or hours drive, and as a local of many years, your host can provide excellent advice and directions. Weekend Trip to Soul's Paradise Resort

We never felt like we were intruding and we felt welcomed by campers staying at the site for extended stays as well. We prefer a private site to being next door to your fellow campers, so it didn’t quite have our desired “camping feel” to it however there’s not many campgrounds offering private sites with full-services throughout the Kootenay’s. Overall, the lake was only a 5 minute walk and it was very peaceful at the resort. Loved the showers/bathrooms being so close by our site 20. We used our own shower but sometimes if we were outside we’d just use the public bathroom. Everything felt organized and well maintained. Very close to the ferry as well, if travelling. Would recommend to others in need of a quiet, yet sense of community place to camp.

Weekend Trip to Retreat Yourself!

Definitely like Jurassic park with all the beautiful foliage everywhere. We could hear the sounds of the lake crashing in the morning, it was so peaceful. Loved the little camper, it was so cute & fit us nicely for the two nights we stayed. Having access to the paddle boards was definitely convenient, it would have been a bit challenging to walk up / down the stairs to the lake. Another family was staying at the beach house but you’d never know it - there’s so much space & privacy. Babs was very sweet & recommended the local outdoor artisan market. Found several treasures to take home to the kids.

6 nights at Laid Back Manor Farm

The Laid Back Manor was just that! Laid back. 6 of us came camping with a camper, 2 tents and 2 dogs for 6 days. There was so much space along the creek there was no issues fitting what we brought. Camper was out along the tree line and we had our tents tucked back in the trees. We enjoyed every morning sitting along the creek, drinking coffee watching the beginning of the salmon spawn. There was a little homemade deck with diving board and my daughters and bf really enjoyed jumping in the water, swimming and floating on the creek and my Mum and I enjoyed some kayaking. The host Jason is a great chef and made us a delicious supper our second night there and also brought us a wonderful snack our last night. He also gave a few of us an archery lesson which was pretty cool! There is an outhouse on the property but up the road about 5 minute drive there is a community centre with flushing toilets and showers, also a store that’s open 10-6pm except Sundays it’s closed. It’s a half hour north of Kaslo, so a bit out of the way from a main town but if you’re looking for privacy then it’s the place to be. Tons of wildlife (be bear smart) and no service but Jason has wifi up closer to his house if need, we brought a starlink so didn’t need it. We loved the privacy and the space and honestly spent the first 3 days just chilling at the site hanging by the water. Jason was super cool and friendly and so was his pup Finnigan!

Nice and private. Peaceful little nook with a picnic bench and umbrella. Fire pit too but there’s a fire ban so didn’t get to use that. Easy to find. Only downside I could say was our tent site was about 20 metres from the outhouse but it didn’t smell too bad :)

My husband and I (and our energetic 1 year old pup) spent 3 peaceful nights at Johanna’s cabin. We ignored all previous recommendations on packing light and naively thought we could pack it all up with our small wagon. We heaved a couple totes and full backpacks up the narrow trail in the heat of the day…and collapsed at the cabin door with exhaustion. Don’t be like us! You don’t need a lot to enjoy this place, there’s a cabinet full of games and books and wonderful trails to explore. Our dog loved the freedom racing up and down the path chasing his beloved ball, in fact he’s still tired from all the fresh air and exercise! It was exactly what we needed, when we needed it. Johanna was a great host and checked in often, making sure we had everything we needed. We are already thinking about our next visit!

4 nights at Private river getaway

Our family had an excellent time at the Private River Getaway Campsite #1. Good things: The site is very private. We saw Rob once during our five-day stay. We did not see anyone else until the last evening when the another group arrived at site #2. The beautiful Salmo River is a few minute walk from camp. The treehouse is pretty cool. Fresh water and outhouse were conveniently located and were clean and functional. The wood deck will fit medium size tent. RV and trailer spots are good. There are lots of small signs for directions. Rob is super friendly and responded to our text messages right away. There were lots of chipmunks, birds, and dragonflies. Minimal bugs. Salmo is a two minute drive away. Good coffee shop, grocery store, brew pub, hardware store, gas station, farmers market. Things of note: Hearn Creek is seasonal, so there is no creek/river directly beside the campground in the summer. The campsite is way back from the highway, but you can still hear traffic. There is very little traffic during sleeping hours. Our six person tent was too big for the wood platform. There rest of the site is not quite flat. There was a medium size bear lurking in the forest surrounding the campsite for days. It was pulling down small trees to eat the berries. Robert’s dog, Camper, chased it off on our first morning. We kept all our food, kitchen, and other attractions locked in a truck when not in use. The closest the bear came to the campsite was approximately 80 to 100 feet.

Where to go

Nelson

With 350 restored heritage buildings and a historic streetcar that’s still in operation, Nelson has a small-town feel with the amenities of a metropolitan area. It sits 45-minutes south of Ainsworth on the western arm of Kootenay Lake. From the snow-capped Selkirk Mountains to the lake views, Nelson has natural splendor from every angle. Many camping accommodations are available, including tent camping, RV campsites, and glamping in cedar wood cabins. The hilly mountain terrain provides epic skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in winter. Hiking, golfing, mountain biking, and fishing are popular activities in the summertime.

Nakusp

The town of Nakusp is a remote area beside Arrow Lake, roughly an hour and a half from Ainsworth. The three local hot springs—Nakusp Hot Springs, Halcyon Hot Springs, and Halfway Hot Springs—are surrounded by more than 15 kilometres of hiking trails. Mountain biking is a hit in the summertime while the winter snow creates the perfect playground for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Tent camping, RV campsites, and chalet cabin rentals are available near the Halfway Hot Springs.

Howser Recreation Site

Nestled beside Duncan Lake (an hour north of Ainsworth), the Howser Recreation Site has a boat launch, covered picnic tables, and excellent fishing. RV and tent campsites are available, but they’re on a first-come, first-serve basis, so no reservations are needed. Get there early in the morning to snag a campsite with a lake view or one close to the pit toilets to make life more convenient. The Glayco Beach day-use area is just down the road with rock and sand beaches.

Ainsworth has distinct seasons with perfect weather for outdoor activities year-round. Summertime heat runs from July until the end of August with temperatures up to 26°C. Snowfall is common from December until February, with a peak in January. Typically, Ainsworth doesn’t get colder than -5°C in winter, which allows for outdoor sports and activities without frostbite.
