If you're looking for peace, solitude, and a chance to reconnect with nature, this little slice of heaven Matt has created is pure magic.
Perched on the summit and surrounded by woods, the setting is beautiful. We spent the evening making s'mores in the outdoor fireplace, watching an incredible sunset, then waking early to an equally spectacular sunrise.
We also enjoyed meeting several mountain bikers and a few hikers along the way. Hearing about their adventures and what brought them to this special place added another memorable dimension to our stay.
One of our favorite surprises was discovering the painted rocks left behind by previous guests. We happily found our own inner artists, decorated a few rocks, and added them to the collection. It was such a thoughtful tradition that made us feel connected to everyone who has enjoyed this special place before us.
The cabin is rustic in all the best ways. It had everything we needed for a simple outdoor adventure. Thank you, Matt, for sharing your beautiful little corner of the world with others. You have created something very special.
We highly recommend Shrek's Hut to anyone seeking a quiet escape where nature takes center stage.

This place exceeded all my expectations and was an absolutely stunning experience. If you're considering it--DO IT.
The hike up was on the "Green Trail" and was fairly well marked. There are several adjacent trials to explore and more adventurous paths to the hut if the 1.3 mile green trail isn't enough.
The hut was well-stocked with many extras. But with the views, you won't spend much time inside.

Stayed 1 night, and thats all I needed to determine how much of a secret gem this site is. Such a unique find, Matt does a Wonderfull job keeping the place stocked with required supplies and utensils but the charm comes from previous visitors who have all added their own leftover elements to explore. I won't ruin the mystery, I will also add that this is a hike in excursion so you really get the isolated in the woods feeling. , I backpacked in about a mi, and enjoyed navigating through the trail system in place, pay attention to the signage. If you stay I recommend looking at some maps ahead of time and identify your orientation when you arrive at the parking lot. Caught a clear sky that day and the sunset over the hills was chefs kiss to end the day.

Shrek's cabin is fantastic, definitely check it out if you get the chance. Matt was very quick to respond, and the cabin is rustic, but well supplied. Very beautiful views.

This was our second time at Shrek’s and it was just as amazing as the first time! We love the remoteness of the cabin and the wildlife was amazing! We’ll be back for sure! The hike in is not bad at all!

We stayed here while mountain biking the Heart of the Greens loop on the Velomont trail. It was the perfect spot. The stars were amazing, sunrise was fantastic and the descent in the morning was great. Matt was responsive and recommended some great trails. I want to back already.

A richly loved and stocked stone hut
Stands testament to hands and hearts.
Well water to quench the thirst and cook,
Logs to crack apart and warm the bones.
Mattresses solid to cradle to sleep.
Books to occupy a seeking mind,
Tools and woods to occupy seeking hands.
Bring food, clothes, bedding, fuel (if you don’t want to cook only on wood), power packs to charge devices, headlamps are always good, and an exploring soul. The mountains will mold you.

Thank you to the private owner and steward of this incredible land. Feeling very grateful they have so generously opened this property to the public and have invited strangers to stay in and use their spaces. Matthew the steward, does a great job on the trail system and maintaining Shreks.
We (2 adults) spent 3 nights with our 2 (almost 3) year old. The hike up is easy and straightforward. Our toddler made the trek to and from the car many times without assistance. The climb up is gradual thanks to rollers, berms and switchbacks. The green and blue trails are very doable with a shotgun bike seat. The hike up with packs and a toddler took us about 35/40 minutes. The hike down about 25 minutes. This was much faster when we were carrying our toddler.
The cabin has everything you need. Which is a great reminder of how little we actually need. We had enough water provided by the Matthew, wood to warm us through 3 cold and windy nights and enough battery lights that we rarely used our headlamps. We played with rocks, colored, watched the ruby crowned kinglets and juncos frolic in the wildflowers, enjoyed the provided games and books and watched the moon and milkyway rise. We hiked and biked. We cooked on the potbelly but also used our own stove as it's faster but you certainly could do all your cooking on the potbelly. The bottom bunk will fit two zlite pads sides by side. The view is stunning. A truly special place.

Lovely spot. The well equipped cabin was a treat. Loved the potbelly stove. Appreciated the low key signage but it can be a challenge if hiking in after dark. This is a very special place.

I truly have no words for how amazing this place is. The hike up is fun and the views are breathtaking taking. Having a fire in the chimney while the sun came up was a special experience. Cannot wait to come back!

Shrek’s Mountaintop Stone Hut
This was my sixth visit eto Shrek's hut and as always, I found it to be a magical place. Cooking and lounging items are all curated so it feels like anyting that you might need is there. View was lovely, we enjoyed talking to others who had made their way to the top and we hope to be back again soon!

I didn't sleep because I couldn't miss the sunset, moonrise, stars galore, and the undercast sunrise. We were even were lucky enough to catch the aurora. We couldn't believe it was real life!

It was wonderful spending time alone at Shrek's Cabin. Matt did a great job setting it up with everything I needed to have a great stay.
Over the years participating in Spartan events, I have spend many nights at Shrek's but never stayed IN it. It was nice finally experiencing the inside.

We stayed to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Living locally, biking up to Shrek’s on the GMT was an already a familiar experience. If the lore of this mystical stone hut and magical location didn’t already inspire you to reflect on how you integrate with nature, staying overnight certainly would. It’s transformational. Just ditch that packing list…. Go back to basics. It’s best to enjoy the experience just by letting go. Shrek’s offers far more than you know…
Find appreciation in the small things. Read wisdom on the rocks. Allow yourself to feel small, staring up at an ocean of stars. Feel love through the Sunrise, sunset, moon-lit landscapes, soaring Redtails & shooting stars….
Breathe deep. Listen & observe like the owls surrounding you.
It’s like a pause button for your life. You’ll wish you reserved more days… .
Shrek’s is more than ample amenities, thoughtfully stocked items to pass the time —Be it alone in quiet solitude, or sharing laughs with a friend by the fire.

My partner and I spent the evening! Beautiful spot with incredible views, but the hike in was tougher than I expected—1.3 miles of steep switchbacks, about a 30–40 minute walk. I wish that was made clearer so we could have packed better (backpacks only—don’t try a cart). The hut was hot at night, and with no opening windows, it stayed stuffy even though it cooled off significantly. We didn’t get the sunrise I’d hoped for due to rain, but being literally in the clouds and catching a bit of a starry sky was still magical. Worth it if you’re prepared, but know what you’re getting into!

Shrek's Cabin on Matthew's land is a special camping experience. Fantastic views of the Green Mountains. Communication with Matthew was great and everything worked as promised. Everyone deserves a night in this special place.

I really enjoyed my stay at Shrek's! I'm fairly new to the area and found the trek to get there a bit challenging with my food and belongings. Once I arrived to the top everything was absolutely worth it. I booked my stay on a perfect clear day and the view of the green mountains was simply breathtaking. The fire pit was amazing and the camp meal turned out superb! I highly recommend stopping at the local general store for breakfast! Thank you Matthew for sharing this gem of a place for others to enjoy!

I greatly enjoyed my experience at the hut for a night! The hike was easy and pleasant, the views at the top amazing, and the hut perfectly rustic. Tons of supplies inside, I was wishing I would have brought ingredients to cook a meal using the stove. Sunrise definitely did not disappoint, either!

Had a wonderful 2 nights staying at shreks cabin. Beautiful trails to hike, easy hiking. Signage could be a little better. Cabin had everything we needed and it was furnished like it was described. Clean camp. Beautiful views. One warning! If it’s hot out the cabin has no ventilation and you will roast in it. Needs to have windows that open. Would go back again but only on cooler weather.

This spot was absolutely gorgeous and super whimsical. We loved reading through the story of Shrek’s Hut as told by fellow guests. The inside wood stove was super warm, I can imagine it being soooo cozy in the winter time.
