Sundar Camping

6 sites · RVs, Tents50 acres · Walmer, VIC
We have 5 sites to offer at Sundar Goldfields Camping. Our 50 acre property features undulating bushland with views of farmlands, wetlands and distant mountains. The name is Hindi for "beautiful". Our rammed earth home sits in the middle of the property and our camping sites are located between our house and the road into the property. We are situated halfway between Maldon and Castlemaine with easy access to both these two interesting towns that attract many tourists to the region. Campers are required to be self sufficient with their own toilet/shower facilities and must take all waste and rubbish with them on departure. The individual sites are called Wetlands 1, 2 and 3 (blue signs), Mountain View (green signs), Gully View (purple signs), The Ridge (orange signs) and Billabong 1 and 2 (yellow signs) . It is unlikely you will hear other guests as there is a good distance between sites. The largest site is Mountain View and can accommodate the most number of guests and is well suited to caravans. Wetlands View has 3 different site options that all overlook the large dam and birdlife that frequent the wetlands. You can select the one that feels right for you. On the other side of the dam is the two Billabong sites. Billabong 2 is open and close to the road, it can accommodate a large group plus caravans. Billabong 1 is a small site that is set in the bush and overlooks the paddock and dam. Gully View and The Ridge are near each other and are secluded and surrounded by bushland. These sites do not have water views and the entrance is located 60m from the front gate, on the right side of our road into the property. Kangaroos and cockatoos are regular visitors to our property. Bird life is abundant and we sometimes see Echidnas and Shingleback lizards. It is a peaceful area and close to the steam train track so the train can be heard in the distance on the days that the Victorian Goldfields Railway service runs. There are great walks from the property towards the Maldon-Castlemaine rail trail. We supply firewood, if required, and camp fires are allowed at certain times of the year. Reg has great knowledge about our native animals/birds plus gold prospecting and is available to chat if you what to hear his yarns. Simply let us know and he will visit whilst you are camping. He also offers tuition on gold prospecting.

The best camping near Kara Kara National Park guide

Overview

About

Embark on an adventure through Kara Kara National Park, a treasure trove of Box-Ironbark vegetation and a sanctuary for native wildlife. Traverse the park's diverse trails on foot, mountain bike, or by four-wheel drive, and witness the vibrant birdlife that adorns the canopy. As dusk falls, settle in at one of the serene campgrounds, where the sounds of the bush become your lullaby.

Notable campgrounds

  • The Upper Teddington Reservoir offers a tranquil camping experience amid towering eucalypts and abundant birdlife.
  • Teddington Campgrounds provide a rustic escape, complete with facilities and the historic Teddington Hut nearby.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot at the popular Upper Teddington Reservoir, especially during peak seasons.
  • Visit mid-week for a better chance at snagging a campsite, as weekends tend to fill up quickly.
  • Keep an eye on the park's official website for updates on campsite availability and potential cancellations.
  • Explore nearby camping options if your preferred site is booked, as the surrounding area offers additional choices.

When to go

The best time to visit Kara Kara National Park is during spring, when wildflowers burst into colour and the weather is mild. Summer brings heat and requires caution due to fire danger, while autumn and winter offer cooler, yet equally enchanting, opportunities for exploration.

Know before you go

  • Check fire danger forecasts before your visit, as the park may close on days of Catastrophic Fire Danger.
  • Be prepared for no mobile reception in the campground areas, ensuring you have all necessary information beforehand.
  • Accessibility facilities are available, making the park's wonders open to all adventurers.
  • Remember to bring your own drinking water and firewood, as these are not provided at the campgrounds.
  • Respect the park's wildlife by keeping a safe distance and not feeding the animals.
