They must be controlled as sheep are nearby and we have an abundance of wildlife. We have a slackline, a rope swing and badmitten for anyone looking to include more play in their stay! Responsible campfires are permitted in the metal fire pits in designated area when restrictions aren't in place. We hope you enjoy your stay at Higher Ground 🙂

Shark Creek Retreat is an ongoing conservation project, where I call myself the caretaker of these beautiful wetlands. I have dedicated 77 acres of it as a wildlife sanctuary, it is a member of the Wildlife Land Trust and has joined the Land for Wildlife environmental community. To date there is a property bird list worthy of a small National Park for all you keen birders out there. To date I have been busy regenerating previously cleared land from farming and the 2019 bush fire with native plants local to this area in the 100's. My aim is to surround most of the property in wildlife friendly fencing, regenerate the flora and create a fauna corridor as a wildlife safety zone from the wetlands to the road and to create a tranquil little space for nature appreciative people to stop and a take a rest. Shark Creek Retreat is a conservation area, no amenities, no bins etc. so you would need to be self sufficient and responsible for own waste. What you bring, you must take. So if camping out in a conservation area appeals to you then head out to Shark Creek Retreat, stay for a night or stay for a week 💚🌳

A small convenient rural property flanked by natural bushland and pasture. Lots of native wildlife bouncing, flying, walking through at dusk and dawn. We have several shaded areas surrounding small dams and springs, scattered throughout the 20 acres. Located approximately 1km off Big River Way (formally the Pacific Highway) this is approximately 2km from the New Highway off-ramp. We are fortunate to have a sealed road to the front gate. The allocated camping area is 500 metres inside the front gate, located in-front of our front dam. The House is located 1km from the front gate. Currently, we do not have any livestock on the property. Dog friendly. No amenities so campers need to have own camping toilet and leave no trace. Good access for 2WD, caravans and RVs. Campfires permitted when restrictions aren't in place, and there is a fire-pit available. BYO firewood or gather your own from the fallen branches or logs in and around the campsite.

The best camping near Sandon Beach, NSW guide

Overview

About

Sandon Beach, located on the east coast, is the perfect spot for a fun camping and beach holiday! This stunning beach boasts miles of soft white sand and crystal clear waters. There are plenty of things to do once you're there, whether it be swimming, surfing, or relaxing. You can also take a caravan and stay near the beach, soaking up the incredible coastal views and fresh sea air. With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the beach is great for families, couples, and groups of friends who just want to enjoy a peaceful getaway. The beach also has plenty of spots to have barbeques or set up campfires, providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy being outdoors and in nature. All in all, Sandon Beach is a wonderful destination for an unforgettable beach getaway.

When to go

The best time to visit Sandon Beach is during the warmer months, from September to April, when the sun kisses the landscape and the water is inviting. However, be mindful of the peak holiday seasons, as the beach can become a popular retreat. Off-season visits offer a quieter experience, though some facilities may be less accessible.

Know before you go

  • Check the local weather and tide forecasts before planning your trip to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
  • Be prepared for the 10-kilometre unsealed road leading to the beach; a vehicle with good suspension is recommended.
  • Accessibility is limited, so visitors with special access needs should plan accordingly.
  • Remember to pack sun protection, including sunscreen, hats, and ample water to stay hydrated.
  • Respect the local wildlife and natural surroundings by following all guidelines and regulations.
