5 m travel trailer · With pets · We recently spent a long weekend at Long Flat with family and friends, and unfortunately, the camping facilities left a lot to be desired.
The camping area was very poorly maintained, with long, overgrown grass, no rubbish bins and no rubbish collection. For the money you pay, you get very little other than a small patch of long grass to set up camp.
The toilet situation was particularly disappointing. There were only two public toilets to accommodate a large number of campers, they were quite a walk from our campsite, and at times there wasn’t’ toilet paper.
We were aware beforehand that there were no showers and that we could use the amenities at the Long Flat Pub. However, the pub didn’t open until 10am, meaning everyone had to rely on the two public toilets until then.
One of our biggest concerns was the long grass, particularly after a large brown snake was spotted right near our campsite. We completely understand that snakes are part of the Australian outdoors, but surely keeping camping areas mowed and maintained is a basic safety precaution. At least then campers would have a better chance of spotting a snake before getting too close.
On a positive note, the food at the Long Flat Pub was lovely, although we did have to wait around an hour for our meals.
Since our visit, we’ve discovered that a neighbouring property also offers camping, with what appear to be much better-maintained grounds. If we ever return to the area, that’s where we’ll be staying.
We weren’t expecting luxury camping, just basic amenities, a clean and maintained camping area, and reasonable facilities for the number of people staying.
Unfortunately, we felt we received very little value for our money. With some basic maintenance and improvements to the amenities, this could be a much better experience for families and campers.
