A secluded bush block about 3.5km from the historic village of St Albans. Accommodation includes a quirky 'mountain shack' up the hill, and a grassy paddock for camping nestled at the foot of the hill. 'Halifax Hill' provides an easily accessible bush escape from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, and a great camp from which to explore the local area. Enjoy the local swimming hole, nearby bushwalks, the historic pub ('The Settlers Arms'), explore the historic convict trail and more.

The paddock is situated on the grassy paddock at the foot of the hill, surrounded by natural bushland and wildlife, around 3km from town and a few hundred metres from an idyllic swimming hole. Note there are no toilets or running water. Campers must bring own camp toilet

Think 'glamping' rather than luxury holiday home. The Mountain Shack is a simple but quirky rustic bush retreat with basic amenities, and comprises: * one private bedroom with double bed and sofa, * a bathroom with combined shower/ bath and septic toilet * a large open plan combined living and sleeping area (with kitchen) within the main cabin, containing a pullout double sofa bed and 2 long sofas. Airbeds are also available. * a couple of small, flat grassy areas which may accommodate a few small tents Note: It may be possible to accommodate more than 6 people on request. The main cabin also includes a kitchen (with fridge, gas stove tops, microwave, cooking implements etc), an enclosed fireplace and features a unique 'living' natural sandstone cliff wall. Water is pumped from a dam, and is recommended to be boiled before drinking . A small quantity of drinking water is also provided. The shack has NO airconditioning or centralised heating and minimal insulation. Come prepared for the heat and cold as you would if you were camping. The shack is integrated into the environment and not a sealed boz. The 'living' nature of the shack means you may encounter small lizards, the occasional small bird, insects or other little critters in the shack. The property has WIFI and a landline (mostly reliable but often goes down in storms), Mobile reception is severely limited. There is a Telstra phone with free WiFi in the village approx 3.6km from the house. The pub and cafe in the village also offer free wifi. The property is home to abundant wildlife including protected species. Pets may be allowed on request, but must be appropriately restrained and controlled at all times and NOT be allowed to wander off leash. The shack is up a dirt driveway (around 200m) which is accessible by most 2 wheel drives.

Helen and Steve are amazing hosts. Everything about the house was well explained beforehand including the directions to the house. The house itself has a awesome vibe with all the necessary things needed for a group of people or family. Highly recommended.

Loved this place! And the kids loved exploring all the knick knacks and odd things around the place. Loved sitting on the back rock deck, gazing into the bush with my morning coffee. We were intrigued by the story of the place. Perfect location near the Settlers and Pickled Wombat.

The photos show it exactly as it is. And for us oldies, it was perfect. Everything you love about camping, with absolutely none of the negatives. It's peaceful, picturesque, and serenely private, with the added bonus of having a ready made bed and a flushing toilet. It was, in a nutshell, perfect.

It was quite and being able to have a fire, made the camping experience complete. What is camping without a fire. The grounds were tidy, and you could choose your own spot. Easy to find, a short distance into St Albans. We took our 16ft Crosstrak and enjoyed the weekend. We will come back.

We really enjoyed our stay at Helen & Steve’s Shack last weekend. We were very impressed by The Shack being built against a rock wall face and the artful repurposing of all sorts of materials to create a most interesting and spacious hideaway. We found the leafy outlook lovely and the outdoor patio very relaxing. Our dog thought so too. Thank you, Steve & Helen, for having us at your Shack!

A great little camp site that's not too far from the city, but far enough to make it feel like you are really out in the country. Had a very relaxing time here, and the birdsong in the morning was spectacular. A couple of great dining options in the village a short drive away as well, if that's more you thing.

Well maintained camping area. Perfect for off grid camping. No toilets, power or water but we didn't need them. We had the whole paddock site to ourselves for 2 nights and it was a great base for exploring the area. Quiet and peaceful in a wonderful area not far from St Albans.

We had a fantastic time pitching our tent under the shade in The Paddock. The location was fantastic and we especially enjoyed the close proximity to the MacDonald River when the temperatures climbed into the 40s.

The hideout!
The Mountain Shack
Lovely shack creatively situated on a rocky outcrop beside the McDonald river. It has all the charm of a yesteryear hideaway. It’s an experience not a polished hotel, think secret mountain recluse, take your book, your art stuff and a bottle of wine. we loved the bush views and sounds, the location and the quirk! Swimming in the river near by, zipping into town for a coffee or beer and enjoying the cute town of St Albans. Loved it so much we can’t wait to come back!

Helen and Steve’s spot of the world is a little paradise. We saw lots of wildlife and enjoyed a very peaceful stay. The township of St Albans is charming and welcoming, I highly recommend a trip to the pub.

We absolutely loved the shack! It was full of life, art and amazing sculptures and it was so lovely during the summer. Lots of animals and insects around the place, so definitely felt like the whole place was alive and happy! We had an amazing time.

We absolutely loved our stay at The Mountain Shack & having the whole place to ourselves in the middle of nature. It’s such a unique property — full of charm, quirks, and thoughtful touches. We spent the evening playing board games and drinking wine by candlelight, which made it feel like we’d stepped back in time (a little spooky, but in the best possible way!). There’s plenty of space to explore, we ducked into the nearby town to the Settlers Arms pub during the day, where there was live music playing in the courtyard, it was lovely. The hosts were incredibly communicative and helpful throughout our stay. If you’re after a rustic, one-of-a-kind getaway, this is it.
