Callicoma Hill offers bush camping for groups in a forest clearing, an off-grid 10 bed rustic bunkhouse and an off-grid self-contained 3 bedroom eco-cabin in the forested mountains at Mount Royal, on the edge of the Barrington wilderness in the Hunter Valley of NSW. We also occasionally offer a camping site in our front paddock with a spectacular 80km view over the Hunter Valley. It is an ideal off-grid bush getaway for families and groups, offering peace and quiet, a mountainside of forest, enviable views and sunsets across the Hunter Valley and fresh mountain air. Most importantly, guests have exclusive use of our property in each area, so you don't have to share with other visitors. We are near Mount Royal National Park, adjoining the Barrington Tops wilderness area. The area is part of the World Heritage listed Gondwana Rainforest Reserves, a place of great scenic beauty and natural diversity. Best of all, it is quiet and away from the crowds. Whether you want an easy walk in nature and peace, an adventurous climb to see a breathtaking view, or are in training for an epic multi-day walk, Mount Royal National Park provides excellent bushwalking opportunities. Or, you can simply stay at camp and sit and relax!

The nearest town is Singleton, 50km to the south.  We have a large, soft grassy 'bush camping' area in a forest clearing and can cater for up to 40 or so campers. Our 10 bed Mt Royal Bunkhouse (see our separate listing) can also be booked in conjunction with the bush camping area. We have one flush toilet, hot shower and undercover camp kitchen, with 2 simple BBQs, a wash basin, and tables and seats under a 6 x 8m roof. For large groups, you are welcome to BYO additional toilet(s) - please ask us for details. A campfire area is provided (subject to fire restrictions). You will need to take all your rubbish with you, as we have no garbage service here. Note also that the last 3km of Mt Royal Rd, and our internal driveway, are unsealed, but are fine for 2WD vehicles. Enjoy beautiful clouds, sunsets, and starlit night skies. A large, grassed area is suitable for games and activities. Picturesque Lake St Clair is about 15 minutes drive away, where you can fish, kayak and boat. Off-grid mountainside eco-cabin

100%
(3)
Cabin · Sleeps 8
Our 3 bedroom off-grid self contained eco-cabin is nestled in the forest, on the mountainside with an 80km view over the Hunter Valley. We are on the edge of the Barrington wilderness,  3 hours from Sydney (Hornsby), 2 hours from Newcastle and approximately 1 hour from the Hunter Valley vineyards. The eco-cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, lounge/dining room, bathroom and shady verandahs. It can sleep up to 10: bedroom 1 has a double bunk, bedroom 2 and bedroom 3 each have a double bed and single bed and if need be, the lounge room can hold 2 mattresses for kids. The kitchen features a traditional wood fuel stove and oven (which we teach you how to use). A gas ring is also available, plus an outdoor simple wood barbecue and campfire (dependent on weather and fire restrictions). The kitchen has a fridge with a small freezer. There is no microwave oven, dishwasher, coffee machine or other energy-intensive appliances. (Please don't bring any kitchen electrical appliances with you, as we have an off-grid limited solar power system). All crockery, utensils and cooking equipment are provided. A cosy wood heater is in the lounge for chilly winter nights. The kitchen stove also heats the kitchen, and provides the hot water for both the kitchen & bathroom. There is no heating in the bedrooms. The bathroom has a flush toilet and shower. Bring your own bedding (pillows, sheets, doonas/sleeping bags) and towels. We provide hot water bottles and tea towels. There is no WiFi or TV, but we do have 2 x USB ports to recharge phones, devices and laptop computers. Unfortunately there is no wheelchair access. Smoking is outside only. You will need to take your rubbish with you, as we have no garbage service here. There is no air conditioning. In summer, cooling is provided by the cross-ventilation from the windows around the cabins. We also have a desk fan. Also, the cool mountain breeze arrives each evening! We have a 'bush BBQ' / campfire next to the cabin, which you are welcome to use (dependent on fire restrictions and weather conditions). And the 80km view over the Hunter Valley below us, the sunsets and the starry southern night sky are amazing!! Many environmental features have been incorporated into the design of Callicoma Hill Eco-cabin to make it a showcase of ecologically sustainable development, and it is accredited by Ecotourism Australia. Special features are the fully independent off-grid solar electricity supply (with battery storage) & minimal electricity usage, and rainwater tanks that provide pure drinking water. Wood from the property is used for cooking, heating and hot water. Waste water is treated in constructed wetlands. Note that the last 3km of the 50km road from Singleton is unsealed, but is fine for 2WD vehicles.

Barn · Sleeps 10
Our off-grid 10 bed rustic bunkhouse provides a peaceful, rustic, getaway for friends, families and groups in a large clearing on our forested property in the northern mountains of the Hunter Valley. We are 3 hours from Sydney, 2 hours from Newcastle and approximately 1 hour from the Hunter Valley vineyards. The nearest town is Singleton, 50 km to the south. The last 3km to us is unsealed, but fine for 2WD vehicles. Mt Royal National Park is just up the road, on the edge of the Barrington wilderness, where you can bushwalk. Picturesque Lake St Clair is about 15 minutes drive away, where you can fish and kayak or boat. The rustic mudbrick bunkhouse sleeps up to 10 people. It has 6 single bunks, with a double bed and two bunks in a separate room. Mattresses are provided, but you need to bring your own bedding and linen. A simple bathroom (with a flush toilet and hot water shower) is 50m away, next to the undercover camp kitchen area. We have a campfire (subject to fire restrictions & local weather). We are off-grid and have no electricity apart from night lighting, there is no wif-fi and phone reception is patchy. You will need to take all your rubbish with you, as we have no garbage service here. Wildlife is protected on our property and no rowdy parties, pets, motorbikes or generators are allowed. Our peaceful setting provides time and space to renew and connect with the important things in life. Enjoy beautiful clouds, sunsets, and starlit night skies around the campfire. The bunkhouse can be booked in conjunction with our bush camping (see our separate listing for camping). This area is ideal for groups: since we only take one booking at a time in this part of our property, you won't be sharing with anyone else! Our 3 bedroom self contained eco-cabin is located 800 metres through the forest and can also be booked in conjunction with the bunkhouse. We also have an occasionally-offered 'front paddock' camping / campervan site with a spectacular view (see our separate listings).
