"Willowbank" is a stunning 252 acre property located in the picturesque Karuah River valley with 1km of river frontage. The property has been in our family for 4 generations, being bought by Ian's great grandfather in the 1920's. We cater for guests that are looking to get back to nature and enjoy the great outdoors without feeling overcrowded! We want our guests to be happy and have the best experience possible. Located only 8 minutes drive from the historical town of Stroud which was settled by the AA Company in the 1820's as a food growing area. There are still many beautiful buildings from that period to explore. A dairy farm for many years, we switched over to beef around 15 years ago. Currently we run around 120 head of Angus and mixed breed cattle. Within 3 hours drive of Sydney and around an hour from the Barrington National Parks, Newcastle, Maitland, Forster and Nelson Bay, it makes it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway! We are offering 6 beautiful, partly shaded, camping sites along the pristine Upper Karuah River. All sites are separated for privacy and are all right on the edge of the river. There are plenty of opportunities for bird watching, hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing (in summer), star gazing or just relaxing. All sites are site only and no toilet or shower facilities are provided. You will need to bring your own camping toilet or self contained caravan/ camper (dump point is located in Stroud township) We hope to make your stay a pleasurable one with many happy memories made. There are many bird watching opportunities around the campsite and may even spot a platypus at the pump hole too. Go for a hike or bring your mountain bike as there are many trails up the mountain and out the back of the property. There are no toilet or shower facilities provided so please bring your own camping toilet etc. There is a dump point located in Stroud township, 10 minutes away. All rubbish must be removed from the site on departure. Pets must be under control at all times as we have cattle and working dogs in the vicinity. Beautiful hip camp great location right on the river large sites with easy access. Very peaceful and relaxing we had the fire pit going and camp chairs out. Great hosts very welcoming and good communication. We will definetly back in summer for a swim.

We had such an incredible stay here and honestly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect campsite. The location beside the river was absolutely stunning. Waking up to the sound of the water and spending our days relaxing by the river made it feel like our own little slice of paradise. The property is beautifully maintained, peaceful, and has everything you could want for a relaxing escape into nature. Whether you’re looking to unwind, explore, or simply enjoy the scenery, this place delivers in every way. The owners were wonderful. They were genuinely welcoming, friendly, and clearly take great pride in sharing their beautiful property. Their hospitality made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. This is one of those special places that you don’t forget. We left feeling refreshed and already talking about when we can come back. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, picturesque getaway. Five stars all the way!

An awesome weekend of R and R

Nat and I enjoyed an awesome weekend away at one of our favourite HipCamps, Willowbank. It is located near the little village of Stroud Road, 8 minutes north of the historic village of Stroud. The owners Ian and Jo were amazing. Ian even took us for a tour of his 252 acre property where they run a dairy farm. It is the perfect spot for a weekend of R&R. Our camp spot “Long Flat” is one of 6, that run along the banks of the Upper Karuah River. They are all nice and flat with mowed lush green grass. We enjoyed a weekend of camp cooking and star gazing. The weather was picture perfect, cool nights and clear blues sky’s. Stay tuned for the video review of the HipCamp including an interview with Jo, who spoke about the history of their property and how she started her HipCamp. Jo even shared stories about her 4 great grandfather, who came to Australia with Captain James Cook and later, Captain Arthur Phillip as part of the Fleet Fleet. We absolutely love Willowbank Hipcamp and can’t recommend it highly enough. The campsites are always immaculate, with beautifully maintained grounds and lush green grass that make for a perfect camping experience. Joanne and Ian are exceptional hosts—friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. They always check in to ensure everything is going well, and having firewood available to pre-purchase is a great convenience. Although the property is working rural land, it’s incredibly well managed. The cows are kept away from the camping areas, so the sites remain clean, tidy, and enjoyable for everyone. The peaceful riverbank setting, stunning scenery, abundant birdlife, and local wildlife make this a truly special place to unwind and reconnect with nature. We’ve visited many times and each stay has been fantastic. Our favourite campsite so far is The Rapids, which offers the perfect combination of privacy, views, and relaxation. We always look forward to returning and creating more wonderful memories at Willowbank. Highly Recommend !!

Lovely property to have a walk around seeing the cows and a few horses… Hosts are welcoming and very helping during our stay. Site had a nice flat bit for our caravan and was free of cow paddies. Nice spot with lots of birds and other wildlife about. Only a few minutes to the Stroud township for water and dump point.

A nice couple of nights at Willowbank at the Old Cedar site. Spacious, relaxing. Pretty quiet. Joanne was a wonderful host, greeting us and directing us, and checking in on our way out. Great fire pit. The creek would be good for a swim in the warmer weather, spotted the platypus!

Such a hidden gem of a campsite. Campsites are well spaced out and 1 to suit single or group campers. We stayed at The Rapids - the campsite overlooked the river easy access down to the river where you can spend the avo floating along and perfect for our 20ft van. So much to do or do nothing - Jo and Ian were fantastic hosts so down to earth you felt like they were old friends. Waking up to the sounds of the cows just an added bonus - put this one on your list

What a wonderful Hipcamp. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Riverview site Willowbank. There was just enough room to spin our 18ft 6” van around to face the river, spacious site with a fire drum. The river was chilly but still managed a dip, a short walk from site where the water flows over the rocks. Jo and Ian are wonderful hosts along with the dogs, although Max is a little naughty 😂. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful flat site, right next to the river, loads of room, quiet feels like you'rein the middle of nowhere. Paperbarks
A beautiful location (I stayed at “Paperbarks”) that feels secluded but is only 10 minutes from Stroud. Huge campsite, beside the river, and large enough to have a choice of a sunny spot for the solar panels, or shady area in the cool. I loved it. Good mobile reception too. Easy vehicle access. Great hosts.

We spent 3 nights at Willowbank and honestly it felt like stepping into a proper laid back Aussie getaway with a host straight out of a crocodile Dundee movie. Ian is a legend of a bloke, quick to tell a bloody good story and had us laughing for ages and behind every legend is an equally lovely wife, Jo was warm, welcoming and made us feel right at home. We camped at "The Rapids", right by the water, peaceful, and perfect for switching off from our devices and busy work schedule, although I found it helpful that you still get service in case of emergency. Waking up to the sound of the river and wildlife was beautiful, fishing and reading down by the river by day and campfire at night with wood bought onsite just adds to the ease of staying at Willowbank. If you're after a relaxing, no fuss camp trip with beautiful rolling hill views, river sounds and a whole lot of character and charm then this is the spot. My family and I will be back !

Amazing place to stay

Long Flat
This place is amazing, private, quiet and easy. Other sites are hundreds of meters away, you have access to the river only footsteps away and it’s only minutes off The Buckets Way. Jo met us as the entry to the property and lead us to the site while giving us a brief of the site and the local area. If you are looking for somewhere to get away but not having to go far of the beaten track, this is the place.
