"Willowbank" is a stunning 252 acre property located in the picturesque Karuah River valley with 1km of river frontage. The property has been in our family for 4 generations, being bought by Ian's great grandfather in the 1920's. We cater for guests that are looking to get back to nature and enjoy the great outdoors without feeling overcrowded! We want our guests to be happy and have the best experience possible. Located only 8 minutes drive from the historical town of Stroud which was settled by the AA Company in the 1820's as a food growing area. There are still many beautiful buildings from that period to explore. A dairy farm for many years, we switched over to beef around 15 years ago. Currently we run around 120 head of Angus and mixed breed cattle. Within 3 hours drive of Sydney and around an hour from the Barrington National Parks, Newcastle, Maitland, Forster and Nelson Bay, it makes it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway! We are offering 6 beautiful, partly shaded, camping sites along the pristine Upper Karuah River. All sites are separated for privacy and are all right on the edge of the river. There are plenty of opportunities for bird watching, hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing (in summer), star gazing or just relaxing. All sites are site only and no toilet or shower facilities are provided. You will need to bring your own camping toilet or self contained caravan/ camper (dump point is located in Stroud township) We hope to make your stay a pleasurable one with many happy memories made. Set up your camp by the river and relax to the sound of the water running through the rapids! There is a fire pit provided, if you would like a fire, please bring your own wood. (Subject to fire restrictions). Grab a blanket and watch the stars on a clear night or cast a line to catch a bass or mullet during the summer months. Perfect spot for sitting in the water and cooling off or bring your raft or kayak and float down the river. River shoes or old sneakers are preferred as the rocks can be slippery. There are many bird watching opportunities around the campsite and may even spot a platypus at the pump hole too. Go for a hike or bring your mountain bike as there are many trails up the mountain and out the back of the property. There are no toilet or shower facilities provided so please bring your own camping toilet etc. There is a dump point located in Stroud township, 10 minutes away. All rubbish must be removed from the site on departure. Pets must be under control at all times as we have cattle and working dogs in the vicinity. Set up your camp by the river and relax! The kids will love it too with plenty of space to run around or play in the river. Cast a line to catch a bass or mullet during the summer months or watch the platypus play or wallabies feed early morning or evening if you are quiet. Wow, what a beautiful place. We had a three night stay and loved it. Jo and Ian are lovely hosts who have created a bit of paradise on their farm. We loved how tranquil it was and the bonus of being so close to the river was perfect. Thank you Jo & Ian, we will definitely be back.

Our weekend camping at the rapids was so lovely. From arriving to leaving everything was so easy and relaxed and Joanne was such a great host and very helpful. We loved how private each spot is making you feel like the only ones there. The rapids part of the river was such great fun, the kids and our dog had the best time exploring and riding the kayak down the rapids- and the river was perfect for the hot weather! So lovely to watch the sunset while watching the cows graze and being visited by the young calves and at the river watching the butterflys and dragon flys dance around. We loved it and will definitely be repeat campers of gorgeous willowbank

Long Flat
We had a great weekend in our caravan at Long Flat. The site was well maintained, private and flat. The stars at night are amazing, the river was a big win for the kids and they loved seeing the farm animals and having a fire of an evening. Quick drive into town for essentials and the dump point. Jo and Ian were welcoming and kind, they checked in during our stay to make sure everything was ok. We will definitely be back :)

After a stressful week at work it was so wonderful to relax at this gorgeous campsite in nature by the beautiful river. Even got to float around on it this time! My second visit to Willowbank was even better than the first and I will be back again. Thanks again Jo and Ian for sharing such a special place.

Camping at Willowbank was so relaxing, Jo and Ian the hosts were wonderful and so welcoming, the ambience, position and the site was private and well presented we have pinned this in our stay list. Even though a working farm our site was fenced off from the friendly cows.

Rapids site has great view of the farmlands and picturesque hillside. The running creek soothes the soul and our kids loved seeing the baby calfs with there mums. Plenty of space on the site for groups and well maintained.

Our review is based on a seven night stay in our caravan. Communication after booking was forthcoming and felt welcoming. Responses from the host to our messages were answered within a reasonble time. Directions to find the property were clear and accurate. Hosts met us on arrival and showing us to our site. Access to the site was easy for our forty year old caravan. The site was flat and well mowed with plenty of room to move around. Hosts were happy to provide assistance to us at the site. We loved the shade provided by a large sheoak and positioned our van to look out over the river flat where cattle grazed on grass right in front of us. We enjoyed seeing them every day and watching their antics. Location was perfect for us... close to Stroud, Gloucester and kilometres of countryside to explore. We felt that the hosts approached their responsibilities seriously when they checked in on us regularly and were helpful from the moment of our arrival. We'd love to return again soon.

Me and my partner stayed at the she oaks campsite the hosts were very accommodating and it was very straight forward getting to the campsite we went on a Monday and we were the only people there The property is beautiful and walking the river is a fun activity to do while staying The campsite is definitely 2wd accessible you do no you do not need a 4wd to access the campground In our stay it was rather windy the campsite is very exposed to wind I recommend checking the wind before your stay but Tbf i think we just got a bit unlucky and I wouldn’t worry abt that too much Definitely recommend keen to return.

I loved our stay. The river was the perfect temperature for a dip. Great to float down on our surf mats under the gorgeous lush overhanging trees. I didn’t see any platypus but they would definitely be there. The camp spots was secluded away from the other campers. Jo and Ian are lovely hosts who are so inviting. I highly recommend it. We will be going back for sure.

We loved the Sheoaks campsite. It gave us wonderful shade on a very hot day. It is spacious, clean and grassy and is also private. It overlooks the lovely river. It is a very short drive to Stroud which has a general store, pub, butcher and a great cafe. It is less than half an hour to Dungog and Gloucester. Joanne was great to communicate with and always very prompt with her replies. She and Ian were very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this place and hope to be back.

Fantastic camp site "The Rapids". So nice listening to the water flowing all weekend. Our second time camping at Willowbank and it won't be our last, we will be back again for sure. Perfect site for us! Had our own river access which was perfect depth for our 3yr old! Only 5 to 10mins into town making it easy for a coffee and beer at the pub! Site was perfectly maintained and private! there were multiple others camped up and couldn’t hear a thing!

We loved our peaceful night at Willowbank. Jo was very welcoming and the site on the river’s edge was beautiful. Platypus spotting at dusk and calves nearby in the morning, very relaxing! So close to Stroud & a very easy drive in. Will be back for a few days next time.

We were warm welcomed by Joanne. She explained a lot about the farm and area. We had a very large site wich gave access to the creek. Were you can swim and see platypus. In the morning we woke up with the beautiful sound of the birds. If it fitted in our schedule we stayed longer. Thumbs up for this beautiful site and owners.

What an incredible spot! Willowbank is one of those rare campsites that instantly feels special the moment you arrive. Beautifully maintained, clean, and level — it’s clear how much care and effort goes into keeping this property pristine. Our site, She Oak, was easily accessible with our 4x4 and camper trailer, and spacious enough to accommodate much larger setups too. The Karuah River is just a short stroll away, with crystal-clear water flowing over gentle rapids — the perfect soundtrack to fall asleep to. We were lucky enough to catch a brief glimpse of a platypus at dusk, and later in the evening, fireflies danced through camp — absolute magic. Our blue Heeler Luna had the time of her life swimming and playing in the river, and little Daisy, the hosts’ Heeler, quickly stole our hearts. Ian and Joanne were the kind of hosts you always hope for — friendly, welcoming, and genuinely warm people. The thoughtful little gift on arrival was such a lovely touch — it’s those small 1% details that truly make a place memorable. Surrounded by lush green fields, rolling hills, and the peaceful flow of the river, Willowbank is pure country serenity. Stroud is only a short drive away if you need supplies, but honestly, once you’re here, you’ll never want to leave. This was our first visit, but it definitely won’t be our last. Huge thanks to Ian and Joanne for sharing their beautiful slice of paradise — we can’t wait to come back.

We had a wonderful stay at Willowbank on the river view site. Jo and Ian were very welcoming and have such a lovely space in some glorious NSW countryside. Perfect for tent camping, site was flat and shaded from the morning sun so we enjoyed a few sleep-ins! The atmosphere was beautiful, the wind through the trees, the babbling brook, the birds and other animals and to top it off the magical experience of seeing fireflies at dusk around our site. Our 7yr olds first ‘real’ camping trip outside of a caravan park and off the grid and she absolutely loved it. Conveniently close to town for ice and supplies while feeling away from it all. Wouldn’t know there were other campers at other sites on the property, our site was secluded and private. It has been warmer than expected for this time of year but the breeze we had made it comfortable and the river was relaxing and refreshing - perfect for floating around on an inflatable or sitting on a rock. Plenty of shade - afternoon sun on the tent but glorious sitting down by the creek for a sundowner. Highly recommend to anyone but especially if you’re from Newcastle or Lake Macquarie and wanting a quick getaway that’s not too far from home but feels like you’re miles away. We would absolutely go back again! Thanks so much Jo & Ian!

Long Flat
Joanne and Ian went overboard to help me and also answer all of my questions The property was just amazing , large camp sites well , maintained with access to the river for swimming definitely a piece of paradise I ended up adding more guests to my trip at the last minute which wasn’t a problem at all Even the firefly’s came our at night to play , a truly amazing experience All I wanted to do was take up squatters rights Thank you both so much , I’ll be back soon

The Rapids
Joanne and Ian were fantastic hosts. We camped at The rapids and it was a great private camping spot. The kids loved floating down the river and spotting all the animals at night like frogs, goanna and eels. We missed seeing the platypus but hopefully we see it next time. The fireflys were also out to flicker through our camp. 10 out of 10 experience and would visit again 😀
