Hilltop Country Camping

12 sites · RVs, Tents175 acres · Crows Nest, QLD
We have several peaceful campsites available on our 175-acre property - some with beautiful escarpment views, and some amongst the peaceful surrounds of the bush. We are 10km from the town of Crows Nest on the Great Dividing Range. 50 minutes from Toowoomba and 2 hours from Brisbane. The hill on the property (Flat Top) is one of the highest points in the area at 660m altitude. From the hilltop, you can enjoy 360-degree views of the surrounding area, with views across the Esk Valley towards the Sunshine Coast, sunsets over the hills surrounding Crows Nest, and even glimpses of Cressbrook Dam. There are 2 separate campsites on the hilltop, one at each end. We also have 3 secluded bush campsites down in the paddocks, these are private and peaceful with no other campers within sight. They are all situated to be able to enjoy the sunset. We feel very spoilt living here in this beautiful place and would love for others to share it. It is extremely quiet and peaceful, yet less than a 15-minute drive to Crows Nest. There is plenty to explore in the area, including: 🏞 Crows Nest Falls National Park (good for a swim) 🐃 Bullocky's Rest and creekside walk in Crows Nest (dog friendly) 🌳 Ravensbourne National Park (rainforest) 🏚 Crows Nest Museum 🎣 Cressbrook and Perseverance Dams 🚂 Muntapa Railway Tunnel towards Cooyar ☕️ French patisserie and other cafes in Crows Nest. 🛍 Antique and boutique shops 📚 Second-hand book store 👩‍🌾 Also markets in Crows Nest on the first Sunday of each month. Further along the New England Highway, Toowoomba is host to the annual Carnival of Flowers. We hope we can help you have a pleasant and peaceful camping trip! Please note: We have a long gravel driveway and dirt/grass tracks to the campsites. 2WD accessible, but it's rough. Pet friendly 🐕

Camping near Esk guide

Overview

Esk’s main street is lined with 19th-century heritage homes and shopfronts, plus cafes and pubs with shady timber verandahs, some of which are on the Register of the National Estate. Drive up the steep incline of Highland Street to be rewarded with views across Wivenhoe Lake and the dam wall, areas popular for camping. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail connects Esk with the towns of Coominya and Toogoolawah, and is suitable for gravel or mountain bikes. Esk camping is all about pitching your tent or parking the caravan for convenience, then heading out into area national parks.

Where to go

Lake Wivenhoe

On the Brisbane River, Lake Wivenhoe is the main water supply for Brisbane and Ipswich, with a 2.3-kilometre-long dam wall. It’s a popular recreational area—just one hour from Brisbane's outer suburbs—with an extensive shoreline home to parklands with picnic tables, BBQs, and boat launching facilities. Fishing is permitted at specified locations, while some motorised boats, kayaks, and paddleboards make for popular ways to enjoy the water.

Ravensbourne National Park & Crows Nest National Park

In the rolling foothills of the Great Dividing Range, a half-hour drive west of Esk, Ravensbourne National Park’s lush rainforest-clad hills and mountain streams make it a haven for wildlife-spotters. Walking trails branch out from day-use areas where picnic tables and BBQs are free to use. Camping is available via advance booking through QLD Parks and Forests, and additional campsites can also be found at Crows Nest National Park, 30 minutes’ drive to the north.

D'Aguilar Range National Park

Visit the Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre near the D’Aguilar Range National Park entrance to get the lowdown on all of the park’s hot spots. Take in the panoramic views (all the way to the coast on a clear day) from Jolly’s Lookout, Camp Mountain Lookout, or the boardwalk at Westridge Outlook. Then, take the 4WD track to Broadwater swimming hole, hike the network of trails that pass through lush subtropical rainforest, or ascend upwards for sweeping views over Lake Wivenhoe.

When to go

The Somerset Region, which includes Lake Wivenhoe, is a significant water catchment and flood mitigation area for Brisbane. Keep an eye on weather reports, and exercise caution during rain events and the summer storm season. The Esk region is very popular during Christmas and Easter holidays, when it's best to book campsites well in advance. Avoid holiday periods if you’re looking for tranquility.

Know before you go

  • If visiting Lake Wivenhoe, check the SEQ Water website for recreational watercraft guidelines.
  • Pack your walking shoes and prepare a daypack with essentials so you’re prepared for hiking all the national park walking trails.
  • Some campsites have wood-burning fires—make sure you pick up wood before entering the park, as collecting it within national parks is not permitted.
  • Subscribe for park alerts to get essential notices about hazards or closures.
