The best camping near Anglesea with campfires

·
Only 37 kilometers from Geelong, Anglesea, a popular seaside community and family holiday destination boasts a lovely surf beach that's back by striking, orange-hued cliffs. The Anglesea River offers canoeing and windsurfing opportunities, while excellent walks abound in Coogoorah Park and the heathlands. Amenities, from supermarkets to cafes, are plentiful.  Anglesea is known for its kangaroo mobs. To see them, get a ‘hoppin to the local golf course (tours offered). Campers can choose from a Big4 to the well-located Anglesea Family Caravan Park where camping sites face the water. The famous landmark of this low-key coastal hamlet, that’s spread out along cliffs and the marshlands behind (think good bird life), is the Spit Point Lighthouse (1834). Aireys has two parks, a Big4, with full facilities, and Aireys Inlet Holiday Park, on the main road with tent sites (no power). Here, caravans have the choice of private ensuite cabins and there’s a small camp kitchen.A short drive from Anglesea, at Eastern View, stands the famous memorial arch and ‘diggers’ sculpture commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the building of the Great Ocean Road. This famous landmark of Australia was erected to commemorate the returned servicemen from World War I who built the Great Ocean Road from 1918 to 1932.Stretching for 44km between Point Impossible (near Torquay) and Fairhaven (near Airey’s Inlet), the trail of the Surf Coast Walk follows the coastline. The walk passes through the famous Bells Beach, famous for surfing. Anglesea is a handy departure point to do some of the walk—north to Fairhaven, or south towards Point Impossible.Heading south, Point Roadknight Beach, near Anglesea, is a beautiful arc of sand framed by orange cliffs and is a handy alternative to the family-filled Anglesea front beach. If you’re heading southwards, along the coast to Lorne, stop at Fairhaven and walk for kilometers along golden sand!

125 acre property on the fringe of the beautiful seaside town of Lorne. The bustling tourist town is home to some of Australia's finest wildlife including koala's, kangaroos, kookaburra's and wallabies... all of which are witnessed roaming around the property with undisturbed nonchalance. In addition to this wildlife, the natural landscape and scenery is one to behold, with lush green grass, waterfalls scattered around the area (including Erskine Falls just a 2 minute drive from the property) and the chance to cool off in the ocean with a short 10 minute drive into the township of Lorne. Your passage to Lorne is an extraordinary one to say the least, spoilt for choice with two incredible routes, the first is the unique and famous Great Ocean Road... exhibit beautiful waves, clear blue water and a road fit for a race-car track. The second route to Lorne is via small regional towns inland with endless rolling hills and healthy green landscapes as far as the eye can see and that's all before you hit Otway national park! This secluded property is special because it is situated in a remarkable position with the perks of both country and coastal living, not to mention unrivalled serenity... being 550m above sea level, snow isn't uncommon on the odd day during winter and surf is only 10 minutes away, so truly extraordinary. There are huge Trees approximately 200ft tall that tower over you in an area of the property we refer to as "valley of the kings" and some in excess of 300 years old. Witness small isolated gulleys (if the weather permits) and you're prepared for a little small hike into our wonderland. My family and I are situated in a modest farmhouse on the north side of the property, with our little camping spots for you scattered around the scenic high points. Water is provided on site, leave the area as you found it. Otherwise get your adventure started.

Clear Springs is a very special spot, offering sweeping views over rolling hills, and across to the ocean. King Island lighthouse is visible on clear nights, and there are koalas and wallabies in abundance. Whilst we require you to BYO toilet, we do have hot shower, woodfired hot-tub, power, water and phone reception. The site is all-weather access, and is just a 7-minutes drive to the Apollo Bay township. Once you catch your breath after initially taking in the sweeping, majestic ocean views, you can find a spot to pitch your tent or park your van. You drive in through a locked farm gate into the fenced camp area. There is not an abundance of flat area, so may not suit if you need large level space. We don't accept multiple bookings, so the space is all yours. You can choose from a few different spots with near-level ground (choose grass or gravel). The site is open to the amazing ocean views to the south yet the area is nestled among mature trees to give privacy and shelter. There are very few houses dotted around the area and not a single busy road within earshot. There is 240v mains power (BYO lead and plug into switchboard). And a tank with spring water (natural and untreated, we've been drinking it for years) and a pressure pump (BYO hoses as needed). There is an outdoor gas-heated shower. We also have a woodfired hot tub available for guests, BYO firewood. Our listing is intended for people looking for a private, tranquil and well-serviced camping area with several bonuses such as power, water, telstra reception, and a hot tub (BYO firewood). And no other guests to worry about. It's much more than a patch of grass! But please BYO toilet - this is mandatory - and leave no trace to allow other people to enjoy the beauty of our property.

Sorry pets are not allowed.

Hidden Valley House is nestled in Anakie, VIC, set within the scenic Brisbane National Ranges and only a 1-hour drive from Melbourne CBD. Taking into consideration our ethos around sustainability, the cabin is “off-grid” so solar powered with a composting toilet but with all the amenities you need. The cabin has spectacular views overlooking the valley with an abundance of wildlife and has a small creek and several caves which have formed over millions of years. As well as the cabin, we offer a camping area to larger groups that need overflow accommodation if the cabin is not big enough. This makes Hidden Valley House a fantastic option for large groups wanting to have all the comfort and amenities of the cabin, but experience the back-to-basic joy of camping in nature. Set on an 18-acre property at the start of the Brisbane National Ranges, it is home to koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, sugar gliders and an abundance of birds including eagles and kookaburras. Furthermore, the land is protected by Trust for Nature and Land for Wildlife offering long-term protection for many ecosystems, species and native wildlife. The property is surrounded by national parks and is only a short drive from charming, historical towns such as Meredith and Steiglitz and only 25mins to Geelong. A number of family-owned wineries are located nearby and within Victoria’s Moorabool Valley winery. AWD/4WD recommended

Anglesea camping guide

When to go

You’ll need to reserve ahead from December 26 until the end of January when the summer holiday crowds descend on the coast. Be aware of bushfires in the hottest months. At any other time of year, the village takes on a slower pace and you’ll have Anglesea pretty much to yourselves.

Know before you go

  • If driving, beware kangaroos around Anglesea, especially when driving at dusk and in the evenings when they appear to nibble on front lawns. If you do encounter one, allow it to hop away at its will (they may become disorientated by the headlights).
  • As everywhere along the Great Ocean Road, adhere to all bushfire warnings.
  • Anglesea has reasonable services, including a small supermarket; for a wider choice, stock up in Torquay (if you’re heading west).
