Roagumba, or Roa for short, is our 920 acre patch of paradise in the stunning Yowrie Valley, an area traditionally inhabited by the Yuin people. Roa is a working cattle farm, made up of approximately 60% cleared land and the rest native bushland. The Yowrie Valley is largely surrounded by the beautiful Wadbilliga National Park. It is a 35 minute drive to the beaches near Bermagui, whilst the historic and quirky town of Tilba is 40 minutes away. The crystal clear Yowrie River flows along the western side of the property with numerous secluded swimming holes. The property is a working cattle farm so you're likely to meet some very friendly Jersey cows during your stay, as well as a lot of native wildlife such as kangaroos, wombats and birds. We operate three Hipcamp sites and two different locations on the property. Mountain Camp is a single site and offers complete seclusion and privacy, while River Camp is a double site and offers views across the valley whilst only being metres from the river. Both locations have composting toilets. We cater for small groups who are seeking a quiet, peaceful escape. Our sites are small and are capped at 6 people each, per night. To reduce traffic and out of respect to our neighbours, there is a maximum of 2 vehicles allowed per site. One additional vehicle per site can be organised, however we need at least 72 hours notice.

After heavy rain you may need to boil/filter for drinking. You will need a 4WD to access the campsites closest to the river as there is a shallow gully crossing. Camper trailer or off road pop up campers will be able to negoiate the tracks. Good clearance necessary to pass over one gully crossing. Dogs are welcome, however, we do run sheep in an adjoining paddock so they need to stay close to your camp. Kids aged 16 and under camp for free. There is a dedicated campfire pit so you can stay warm on chilly evenings (please check to see if there is a seasonal fire ban in place). Fire wood can be provided - chainsaws are permitted but be mindful of structures that are animal habitats. Your family may enjoy taking a bushwalk that takes you around the 300 acre native bush paddock. Climb up and get a birds eye view down into a gully of magnificent granite boulders above where the river disappears deep below. Identify the unique sounds of the native birds and follow the tracks wildlife create. We are centrally located - just 1.5 hours from the snowfields and from the best beaches of the NSW coastline. There is a small general store, 2 takeaway cafes and a pub at Nimmitabel, or you can get all supplies in Cooma 25 mins away. Please note that we have very limited reception service for mobiles, so let's communicate via messages before you arrive in our area. I can provide a camping setup if you need extra bedding or you don't have any camping equipment or tent.

Misty Mountain Wildlife Refuge is a 330 acre farm which provides sanctuary to kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas and many bird species including their habitats. There are Alpacas and Sheep, Kangaroos, Wombats, Kookaburras, Echidnas and many other animals that enjoy this property. The land has 80 acres of cleared grassland this side of the river, and for the adventurous and energetic you can rome the other 250 acres by crossing to the other side of the rive, there are large stands of rainforest and bushland, with 2.5 km of Brown Mountain Creek and its tributary meandering through it. There are some swimming holes and mini rapids; the crystal clear water flowing over the river rocks can be heard from most parts of the farm. The land comprises Little Brown Mountain and has 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and farmland with wonderful cloud formations and mists contributing their mystery and beauty to the dramatic landscape. There is an orchard with trees producing several varieties of apple, stone fruit and citrus in abundance. A cottage garden produces various vegetables and herbs such as spinach, celery, potatoes, garlic, chives, lettuce, rocket, parsley, turmeric, peas, beans, tomato etc. Past bushfire damage to some trees in the cleared paddocks is evident however, many are recovering well and most provide photographers with interesting and dramatic subject matter. Due to the catastrophic events of the NSW bush fires in this area all camp fires must be kept responsibly safe and no unsafe camp fires will be tolerated. All Guests are required to have an acceptable camp toilet, no holes in the ground. All river access points are shared, be mindful of others. As dogs are welcome and even well behaved dogs will be dogs when it comes to their family, all guests are advised to make themselves known prior to going near another's camp site, then there is no surprises either way. Pets allowed but be aware it is a running cattle farm and it's expected that you know your pets whereabouts at all times. At 1200 metres elevation it is often colder than the surrounding areas and sometimes very foggy. A second site is available near our house at the "hayshed". Let's say you're travelling between Bega and Cooma or Bombala, it's getting late and you need a spot to spend the night which is safe and you can plug into power. In addition, we can provide a brunch food hamper, made from local ingredients where possible, from the beautiful Bega Valley! Gluten free options catered for (see 'extras'). Campsites are limited and exclusive, either camping with your own tent plus tree hammock provided, or book our three person tree tent. We also have a tent site. Parking is allocated on-site, with a short 300m walk to your campsite, so hiking gear is recommended. Please let your host know if you have a 2WD or 4WD car. Open for bookings, two night minimum, 2pm check in 'til before dark - check out 11am. Please note - firewood is provided - included in your booking & set ready for you to use. 1000 acres of bushland, private campsite only 3km from the Snowy Mountains Highway. Good mobile coverage. Lots of wildlife. Campfires permitted. Potable water available. No toilet or amenities. 4WD is best but not absolutely necessary, a small low clearance car won't be suitable. Pets allowed but be aware it is a running cattle farm and it's expected that you know your pets whereabouts at all times. At 1200 metres elevation it is often colder than the surrounding areas and sometimes very foggy. A second site is available near our house at the "hayshed". Let's say you're travelling between Bega and Cooma or Bombala, it's getting late and you need a spot to spend the night which is safe and you can plug into power. We loved camping here. Perfect for exploring the area and chilling at the same time. It feels more like a rural campsite than a bush camp being a stone’s throw away from the main road. Super friendly and easy going hosts. Respectful owners mindful of our dog’s needs. Enjoyed chatting with both Julie and David. Dunny is exactly that - a dunny! But we didn’t mind. And our pooch loved the place. Stunning views and amazing campfire set up, both for warming up and cooking. So much wood provided, makes the nightly fee very much worth it. Be wary of ticks, we saw several and I got bitten but we were prepared and so wasn’t an issue. A great experience and wonderful hosts!

The site was well maintained and ready. Composting toilet is well lit and very clean. The gate and path to river let us feel extra secluded and really take advantage of the solitude. We loved being able to sit by the fire and watch the kids having fun paddling on the river 😀 This was a great spot that we hope to return to in future.

Beautiful, flat green field perfect for tents, or any kind of camping, clean toilet, good fire place with something you can cook on and a picnic table. She had some firewood already for me to use. Short walk down to pristine , private , river with afew chairs. I can confirm there are definitely platerpus in the river. She acceptes pets , I had my dog and bird with me. There alot of wallies, roos, rabbits ect. So it your dog likes to chase, keep them on a leash. There is little phone coverage, my navman took me to the place down the road but the place is well signed. Trying and fuel up well before you hit the gravel road. But overall a beautiful place to camp 5 stars.

Super happy Michael and his family were super welcoming and accommodating. We were met with a carton of eggs and escorted to our campsite to which was clean and comfortable. Michael provided us with a map which allowed us to freely explore on our motorcycles. Would definitely recommend staying here and will absolutely be back.

The best mountainous camping near Merimbula guide

When to go

The best time to hit the beaches of the Merimbula region is between the warmer months of October and April, though crisp winter days are also ideal for bushwalks and cosying up beside a campfire in the evenings. Visit in March to gorge on local produce at the Merimbula Eat Festival, or in late October or early November to catch the Eden Whale Festival in Eden.

Know before you go

Merimbula is just under a six hours’ drive south of Sydney, and about three hours southeast of Canberra, with bus services available. Merimbula also has a small airport with flights from Sydney.
Oysters are available year-round on the NSW south coast. Sydney Rock oysters are usually at their peak during the warmer months, Pacific oysters can be enjoyed throughout the year, and Angasi oysters are best in winter.
Checking up-to-date rules before starting a campfire is particularly important on the NSW south coast.
