Colorful volcanic rock formations shoot up from the 53-mile-long Lake Owyhee, rewarding visitors with incredible views and tons of nooks and crannies to explore. The best way to experience the lake and see the surrounding red, rugged mountains is by boat, and don’t forget a fishing rod--you’ve got a good chance of hooking largemouth bass, black cappie, catfish, and the occasional stocked trout. Be sure to look up from the water every now and then; you may spot antelope, bighorn sheep, and coyotes roaming among the canyon rocks. Or travel on two legs on one of the park’s hiking trails, then cool off with a swim in the lake. Venture out of your tent, which you can pitch in one of two campgrounds, and check out the sky after dark descends; you’ll be dazzled by the nightly show the stars put on.
