Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Sat to Sun: Closed
Big waves, strong winds and long stretches of empty beaches. That's what you'll find at this national seashore. With the sound on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, you'll be surrounded by incredible views and unspoiled nature. Stop pretty much anywhere to enjoy the beach, watch the crabs in the water, and explore the sand dunes. Bring a boogie board with you for some gentle water fun in the waves. You'll be amazed at how warm the water is during the summer.
Several lighthouses beckon you to climb them—The Bodie Island Lighthouse is a particular favorite of many visitors. Rangers at the lighthouses can give you some historical information and make sure you haven't missed anything.
The drive from Kitty Hawk to Hatteras (or the other way around) is not to be missed. Rough weather can cause road closures or stop

The drive from Kitty Hawk to Hatteras (or the other way around) is not to be missed. Rough weather can cause road closures or stop the ferry running to Ocracoke Island. If you're driving a 4-wheel-drive, you can actually drive right onto the beach. You need a permit for this, but it's good for 10 days of off-roading fun. Try fishing right off your tailgate in the waves!
You can camp all along the Outer Banks at secluded waterfront sites, in screened-in porches, and on welcoming farms that offer you freshly laid eggs for breakfast. Find these sites and more at Hipcamp.
