St. Vrain State Park
Good grief this park is pretty… and it’s a hop, skip, and a jump away from Denver and Fort Collins. You can drive too, if that’s your jam. However you get here, you’ll immediately fall in love with this no-frills, family-friendly state park. The park covers several different ponds, making it the perfect place to cast your fishing line. Thanks to the ponds, it’s easy to get in some quality bird-watching here, too. Eagles, Egrets, Pelicans, and more flock to these waters. Take to the water yourself and enjoy a calm day of paddling around. If you’d rather stick to land, then take a leisurely stroll.
Each of the park’s trails will take you around one of the ponds, and you won’t work up much of a sweat ambling around this flat landscape. Pause to appreciate the mountains in the distance... and the fact that you don’t have to huff and

Don’t forget your tackle gear! The campsites at Mallard campground are ideally situated between Mallard Pond, Killdeer Pond, and Sandpiper Pond—all of which are chock full o’fish. The designated fishing spots around the Mallard and Sandpiper Ponds are easily reachable with a short walk from the campground.
The bigger the pond, the better the fishing? We’re not exactly sure if that’s true, but camp at Pelican Campground and toss a line in the adjacent Pelican Pond—one of the larger bodies of water at St. Vrain State Park—and report back to us. For the best pond-front view, try to reserve site 20.
Craving a little seclusion at St. Vrain? Try to snag a spot at Red Tail Pond Campground; with only seven campsites, it’s one of the least crowded camping loops in the park. It’s electric! Shaded and spacious, Sandpiper campground at St. Vrain State Park is but a small piece of the iconic and historical natural beauty of the Rocky Mountain wilderness. Put it in park for a couple of days--or two weeks--for light, but mountainous exploration.
Wave hello to the new neighbors at Tail Feathers campground located at the road entrance. Down wind are a few more campsite loops. Just a stone’s throw from the Bald Eagle Pond Day Use area and parking lot, paddle out to catch a glimpse of songbird, raptors and--in the winter--bald eagles.
