Camping near Hilton Head Island

This island off South Carolina is famous for its unspoiled beaches and easy resort living. Under an hour from Savannah, Hilton Head Island is also a golfing destination. The island has over 30 courses, including Harbour Town, home of PGA's RBC Heritage tour. Hilton Head has more hotels than campgrounds, but several RV resorts let campers unwind in style. These upscale campgrounds are big on amenities, from swimming pools to saunas and tennis courts. Extras like Wi-Fi, cable TV, and full hook-ups are usually included. Tent campers have to trudge back to the mainland to sleep under the stars. The nearby town of Bluffton has private campgrounds with tent camping areas. Big rigs can find roomy sites at RV parks in Hardeeville. Of course, you can still day trip to Hilton Head. Coligny is the most popular beach, with swimming, bike rentals, and restaurants within walking distance. For fewer crowds, look to beaches on the north shore. Islanders Beach is especially low-key on account of the resident-only parking. But you can totally bike or walk over. Or you can look for alligators at the island's nature preserves, including the Audubon Newhall Preserve. If you're determined to pitch a tent on an island, Skidaway Island is only an hour away in Georgia. The state park has tent camping amid live oaks, along with cabins and some full hook-up sites. Hunting Island in South Carolina is another good alternative to Hilton Head for camping.

The Lowcountry is great for water sports, kayaking, boating, jet skiing, sailing, hiking and canoeing. Each season offers an opportunity to participate in fishing, crabbing, shrimping or digging for oysters in local waters. Our area is a favorite of cyclist groups, the long, flat, rural, scenic, roads offer pleasant riding experiences for cyclist of all ability levels. There are bike lanes on many of the major roads. Other recreational activities in our area are geocaching, horseback riding, tennis, golf, hiking, beach volleyball, beachcombing, and birdwatching. There are a few special events throughout the year, Gullah Festival-May, Water Festival-July, Shrimp Festival-October, Beaufort Food Truck Festival-October, Soft Shell Crab Festival-April, Pat Conroy Festival-November, Heritage Days Festival-November, Night on the Town-December. We're bread baking, pasta making, timber milling, woodworking, clay-forming and metal pounding. The goal is to evolve into a small world of self-reliance and harmony with nature. Ani and I are big believers in being mindful and respectful of our environment wherever reasonable. So, we are incorporating both alternative and municipal utilities as they can fit into our homestead design and limited budget. Through good design, our goal is to show just how "normal" small living can feel. We all have personal priorities and those will vary greatly, and that's okay. But no person should be so self-absorbed that we have completely shut out the importance of being respectfully mindful to the earth and to our fellowman. After all, if we don't have that, what do we have? To be completely transparent, though, the creatives in us also would like it if we inspired onlookers to possibly look at their own space and life a little bit differently. We've personally found it to be so fulfilling to distinguish real desires and needs from the ones we've been groomed to pursue, and then work to make them a reality. We've found it energizing to witness our fellowmen and women pursuing a dream. We'd like to be a stimulating memory along any person's journey. Visiting with us, we sure hope our guests don't expect to find a corporate approach to life here, and that they can appreciate some of our old-fashioned ways. That, as our paths cross, we won't be held to a business-first standard that we have worked hard to remove ourselves from. We realize everyone has a right to be themselves, but our presentation at Heirloom Hamlet has been purposefully designed to be a refreshing hideaway from the norm.

Though I wasn’t able to meet Catherine in person, she was always available and very personable. The property is historic, and charming, with the biggest oak trees I’ve ever seen! We were provided with a fire ring, and ample firewood, and had an enjoyable stay. The dogs loved having room to roam, with a little bit of woods to explore.

Totally private the night we were there while still being very close to town for a few restaurants, coffee, etc. The kids loved seeing all the chickens and pigs and the host Marissa was super friendly. Our stay at Heirloom Hamlet was nothing short of picturesque, morning fog coming up through the trees and an incredible old oak at the center. Our timing did not allow us to fully enjoy the property but that tiny bit we saw will definitely have us coming back. The dog has decided that this is her new favorite place and did not want to leave. The Small Bathhouse has some really nice touches that really showcase how much Curt and his family value hosting as well as creating a very eco-concious space that reminds us of the importance of all doing our part. One thing we do know- this may not be right for some folks and that’s ok, but definitely a place that we will visit again.

We love Heirloom Hamlet and return often. A really nice little spot, close to I-95 for camping with or without hookups. The non-hookup spot is especially private. Firewood is supplied, and the public pinecone fire pit is a real treat! Curt is a very welcoming host!

Weekend Trip to Bennetts Point 31

My group of three (and pups) loved camping out at Capt. John’s place! It was such a peaceful location with breathtaking views. It’s the perfect location to take in the Carolina sunrise and sunset. The bathhouse was a great amenity to have. Capt. John was a standup host who was quick to respond to any and all questions. Would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful place to take in coastal nature. We will certainly be back!

I will be back. The site was well maintained. Firewood is easily accessible if you pay for it, which was also super convenient. Very little to no light pollution or sound. Spaces are wide enough to feel private and the site is easy to find. The owner is very responsive. I definitely look forward to our next visit.

Weekend Trip to Flying “W” Farm

We made an impromptu stop on our way south and really lucked out- found a very comfortable spot. Pull through site, flat area with electricity! It was raining, so we didn’t want to unhook.. it worked out perfectly for us. The host Will was super helpful and responsive- I would definitely stay again!
