The vibe at Whiteside Mountain
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Whiteside Mountain is absolutely breathtaking! It takes a bit of work if you don't have a 4x4 but you can def make it without. (We did) Once at the top, your rewarded with 360 degree views of the valley below. The outside shower and toilet have some pretty spectacular views! I can't say enough good things about Whiteside Mountain. Thanks for having us Steve!
This campsite is AMAZING! It's exactly as Steve described and was perfect for our night away from LA. We only wish we had booked it for longer. It's fairly easy to get to, has everything you can think of (water, restrooms, even electricity, and more) and is a truly beautiful area.
Steve was great to work with, super easy and responsive.
We've already recommended the site to others, and are definitely going to plan another trip for longer.
This is a truly special campsite. The "doghouse" has two large twin size cots but no closing door so you might get cold some winter nights. We had our quickie tent with us so we just pitched that right on the the platform and still had plenty of space to not feel cramped.
The platform has a picnic table with two benches, a large food prep area, sink with running water and a double burner propane stove that will make your little camp stove look like an ez-bake oven. There is some rigging up on the platform to hang a hammock so definitely bring one with you!
The walk to the toilet isn't as death defying as the pictures may lead you to believe and I felt comfortable taking the walk in the middle of the night.
There are two campfire areas. One is kind of out towards the edge of the mountain with four chairs around it so you can watch the sunset with a nice fire.
The trip up the mountain is slow and we were happy to have a 4wd truck. You're going to want some good ground clearance under you. If you have a kid or a dog they will need to be well trained or on a leash. It's a mountain. With wild animals. You will need to have respect for that so you don't fall off a cliff or get eaten by a bobcat.
We are experience campers and I have all the gear but you can come out here with a couple of sleeping bags, a lantern, and a cooler and be SET. Obviously, you'll need to bring your wood if you want a fire and pans and utensils if you want to cook.
We had perfect cell service (Sprint) and Steve stayed in contact. He is a great host and we will be back!
I really can’t put into words how spectacular the Crow’s Nest experience is. Picture a mountain top bungalow with sprawling views, hammock heaven, and the morning bathroom break of your dreams! Steve was extremely accommodating, but gave us all the space in the world. Literally, 160 acres of freedom! You could spend a week at Crow’s and still leave feeling like you haven’t seen it all. This place is magic. We’ll be back as soon as we can. Pro tip- make sure you have a 4x4 capable vehicle because the drive up is an adventure in itself. Enjoy!
Whiteside Mtn was an incredible getaway! Just a short distance from San Diego but as secluded from city life as we needed. Amazing host who provides enough amenities to accommodate any camping preference. Highly recommend a weekend getaway and don't forget to enjoy the toilet with a view!
This spot is amazing!! We had our friend's bachelorette weekend here and it was perfect.
It's very private and comfortable; you essentially get the entire mountain to yourself! There is running water and a working toilet with an amazing view! The only thing you really need to bring is a stove to cook food (and a generator if you want electricity).
Steve is also very very helpful and accommodating and will answer all of your questions throughout your stay via text or phone call. He even stopped by to show us around the mountain and pointed out some of the great hiking trails.
Can't wait to book again!
First before getting to how amazing the location is, I just want to thank Steve for being the best host. He met us at a random time at the gate after we were running late to show us exactly where the location was. I had my older car which decided it wasn’t going to start up so he was so patient and helped us get the car to where I could get it towed the next day. Drove my friends and gear up to the site and then gave me a ride to La Mesa. He went way beyond and saved our day. Once getting to site,,,, it’s beautiful !!! Your view is amazing and he has covered every detail to make it a comfortable stay. Staying at the site was a lot of fun and hiking around to the different rocks also enjoyable with rope assists to get you to the top. Just a very cool and amazing property. I highly recommend this location. You’ll love everything about it.
This spot doesn't need another review- every wonderful thing about this place has been said really. All true. So I'll use my space to say that what I most regret is not meeting Steve. It takes a special person to create this kind of magic, and it makes you want to spend some time getting to know them. All of it so beautifully done. Simple but very thoughtful and high quality. Small touches that blow your mind. Lines and surfaces that make you so grateful there are no walls between you and the landscape. I found myself wishing I had been there to see it all come together. What he chose to put there feels like Steve realised how much of a shame it would be to just keep this all to himself. And he clearly understands extremely well how best to share it with others.
I encourage you to come and explore, have a gorgeous meal in the evening, leave behind any small item that may help the next person, if you happen to think of anything... and be prepared to feel very lucky to have spent some time here.
I brought a friend from London with me- here's what she wrote about her stay:
Steve has created a breathtaking 'glampsite' with top notch facilities - a kitchen area with running water, a fully flushing loo with sink (open air peeing has never been so exhilarating!), an open air shower, a cool 'doghouse' cabin to sleep in and a beautiful canopied decking area with those awe-inspiring views all around you. Every detail has been thought of to make this an outdoor home away from home. I can honestly say it's one of the best things I have ever done and will be back!
