Sojourn Camp
in Sojourn Camp, New YorkThis site is *almost* perfect. The tent and outhouse are both newly constructed. The tent is thoughtfully appointed with a comfy bed including bedding, two bedside tables, and a small wooden writerâs desk and chair (and a set of string lights â theyâre not powerful enough to be able to see with, but theyâre pretty). The outhouse is bright and clean and smells pleasantly of peat and fresh pine â no typical outhouse odors. There is a tidy fire pit and a charcoal grill. It is convenient as a jumping-off point for many trails in the Giant and High Peaks wildernesses. Now, in October, the site is blanketed with pine needles â itâs really all lovely.
However, the total lack of privacy from the highway was for me a fundamental flaw that will prevent me from renting here again â and had the listing been clearer about this, I would not have rented it in the first place. Rather than beingâoffâ route 73, it is ON rte 73. It is maybe 30 feet from the highway, and there is no fence or hedge between the site and traveling cars and trucks, only some scraggly baby trees that provide little cover, at least in the fall season. The noise from passing trucks & buses in particular was also pretty loud. The exposure to highway traffic made much less enjoyable for me to hang around outside on the property.
If you donât mind being visible to passing highway traffic, then Iâd recommend this site. If you are looking for basic privacy, I would not recommend it.
