While it was impossible to find a state or federal campsite for the 4th of July on short notice, we were lucky enough to hear about HipCamp and stumble upon Elk Creek. Upon arrival at our site in a beautiful pine woods, on 100 acres of land free to hike through, we were met by the owners who welcomed us warmly. Soon after, the son in law passed by to say hi and ask if we would like any free firewood. Later on, to celebrate the holiday, another small friendly group stopped at the site to offer jello shots. This was an incredibly warm experience and will be our traditional place of camp going forward every year, as long as it's open.
