Sagewinds Farm High Desert Camp
in Sagewinds Farm High Desert camp, CaliforniaFANTASTIC!!!! My only hesitation in writing this glowing review is that I don't want too many people to find out about this amazing place!!
Ellen was great - greeted us when we arrived along with her friendly dogs and miniature horses. Her hands were covered in mulberry juice and she led us straight to get some for ourselves.
We set up camp on clearing with amazing views in every direction, offering a perfect vantage point for watching the sunset over the hills to the west.
We explored the property on foot - following Ellen's tie-dyed trail markers to the top of the mountain on the property and scrambled and climbed around on the massive boulders at the top. The views from the top are stunning.
During the hottest part of the day, we set up our camping chairs and portable camping table in the cave and played cards. In the late afternoon, the breeze picked up and cooled everything off. Then we spent the night watching the meter shower.
We also checked out the "Institute of Perception," a funky collection of sculptures, murals, and grounds created to facilitate spiritual meditation and realization. There are some really cool abandoned train cars and you can hike up to the top of Jacumba Peak.
We'll definitely be back to visit Ellen, Jack (my favorite of the dogs that roam the property), and the rest of the crew. Perfect weekend!

in Desert Mountain Majesty, CaliforniaWhat a great place to camp!! Easy to find, convenient access to Joshua Tree NP (campsites within the park fill QUICKLY). The added amenities - outdoor shower (with hot water!), fire pit, fire-burning stove, and clean outhouse with sink and flushable toilet were definitely worth it!
