In the heart of Grant Wood Country in Jones County, Iowa, The Barnyard is an eccentric art installation space created from found, recycled, and re-purposed building materials. Gothic and rustic, the space provides multiple camp sites for easy access to bike trails through town and into the Wapsipinicon park across the river from the property. Kayak the Wapsi (we recommend a Matsell Bridge put in with a stop at the historic General Store in Stone City) and end only a mile a way from camp at the Barnyard. Visit the State Penitentiary museum, hang out with the Barnyard chickens, hike our wooded trails, or simply unwind. This place is a magical retreat unlike anywhere else in the world.

Xene and bob were fabulous hosts. Informative and warm. The place is magical. They are so creative. It’s even more beautiful and original than the photos. Great bike ride or hikes within 5 minutes of property in wapsisican state park. Gorgeous. Perfect. 5 stars. A note: despite rural setting of this eclectic and must see artistic place, on top of a hill with lovely country feel you can still hear cars from highway at night.

Fantastic weekend spent here. Great place for some well needed r&r.

Thanks for the great review, we hope to see you again!
Just as cool as the pictures look and interesting things for you to find out on your own too!

Thanks for being an adventurer and coming to stay as one of our first campers! Hope you make it back this way again!
Peaceful, convenient, beautiful ret
Xene was a gracious, flexible host with great communication. Despite a couple delays in my trip, she made sure I had directions and images of the campsite. The stars were gorgeous and it was a perfect stopover for my road trip. I plan to rebook on the way home!

Thanks for the great review. We hope you make it back this way again. Happy travels!
Xene and Bob have a truly magical space. We had a fun & art-filled weekend and are already planning our next trip back. Can't recommend this place enough.
This was a truly unique experience. Beautiful plot of land. And a unique artistic experience to boot. The hosts are unbelievably friendly, and the site attracts some unique people, artists and otherwise. Great place to socialize, or to just stay private.

Thanks for the wonderful review. This has been our first summer with campers and we have enjoyed every moment. We hope to see you again if you venture this way in the future.
This property is a dream. Go check it out and see for yourself!

Thanks for the great review Charlie!
It was an amazing place to stay. Also very inspirational and magical. I will certainly come back my next time driving across the country
Loved Xene and her magical farm. We had a quick stay, arrived late and woke up to the beauty of this spot. It’s more like camping in an outdoor museum. Xene was a great host and quick and clear communicator. Highly recommend.

Thanks for the great review! We hope to see you again when your travels bring you this direction!

Thanks so much for the great review! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We are equally disappointed to hear the highway noise as any camper, but the upside of being minutes from town do have some perks too. We hope to see you again!
