Excluding the Gauley whitewater season after Labor Day, we provide a
totally private primitive camping experience where you will have exclusive use of the campground. In other words, you will be the only campers here.
The Tawney Farm is a small-scale wool sheep farm located next to the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area in the Mountain Lakes region of central West Virginia. Our 126 acres lie nestled in between two beautiful mountains -- one of them named Panther Mountain-- in the Gauley River gorge. Here we raise Merino Jacob X sheep for wool where I process the fiber and either sell it to other fiber artists or felt it into crafts and hats myself. Our farm is also home to a miniature horse, chickens, and of course dogs and cats.
The farm offers primitive camping with the Gauley River Wild & Woolly Primitive Campground and our primitive cabin, The Nut House.
Hike up our trail to the mountaintop to camp in a huge field and experience incredible night skies. Or if you aren’t up to the full hike, pop up your tent at one of the shady, wooded campsites along the trail. You can even camp in one of our scenic pastures where you can camp in your tent or small camper or sleep in your car, van or truck.
Park-style grills, fire pit grills and camping cook stoves are provided for your use. You are, of course, welcome to bring your own small portable grill.
And to make your "roughing it" camping experience not so rough, we've added a few amenities! Clean portajohns are provided as well as a "to die for" outdoor hot water shower! And get this, your first bundle of firewood is FREE! Heck, we'll even throw in some charcoal if you prefer.
If you're like me and sleeping on the ground is just not in your best interest, why not try the Nut House. Perfect for a couple or a small family, the cabin can sleep 4. There is one full-size bed (a 1950's roll-away bed) and one full-size futon.
You will need to provide your own bed linens or sleeping bags and pillows.
It has a tin roof perfect for those rainy nights and a creek that runs behind it. The cabin was made with the least amount of purchased items as possible, so we could keep the rental price low. There is no running water, indoor plumbing, refrigeration or cook stove. But we provide park-style grills, firepit grills and camping cook stoves for your use and your first bundle of firewood is free! Charcoal is also available.
All you have to do is throw a couple of sleeping bags in the car and pack a cooler full of camping grub. Oh, and don't forget your hiking shoes!
Although the campground is pet friendly, we do not allow pets inside the cabin.
Just a short drive from the New River Gorge National Park, Summersville Lake & Dam, Carnifex Ferry Battleground State Park and just minutes from the beautiful Gauley River, you're sure to find something fun to do while camping with us. Janie's Hole is a beautiful waterfall at the Mason Branch takeout of the Gauley River that you can hike beside of or in!
