105 West Ranch

4 sites · Lodging101 acres · Goldfield, CO
A mountaintop ranch in Colorado that sits below the famous Colorado “14er”, Pikes Peak. This property sits on top of a mountain at an elevation of nearly 10,000ft and features 3 unique Glamping sites! The ranch features a tiny cabin, geodesic dome tent and platform canvas tent. The sites sit on 100 acres of private, pristine Colorado mountain land that offers over 3 miles of private hiking trails and unrivaled views in all directions. A large, mature aspen grove covers most of the property and views to the south stretch over 100 miles! Despite being on a mountain, over 70% of the property sits on level or gently sloping ground making it perfect for camping spots and events. The Eastern edge borders public land, infinitely expanding access and hiking opportunities. It’s only 1,500 feet from a large reservoir and river- both are accessible by hiking or an easy 5 minute drive. 105 West Ranch also has some deep and unique history. Our area was originally surveyed in 1881. After that, miners came through in the late 1800s and dug prospector pits looking for gold. Many of these pits and even some old tin cans from miner's camps are still visible on the property today. In 1931, the area was re-surveyed with more accuracy. In 1936, the President of the United States, FDR, granted a land patent (homestead) of 632 acres to homesteader. Part of this 632 acre homestead granted by the President was what is now 105 West Ranch. Fast forward nearly 100 years. My wife, Rachel, and I bought this property in 2019, fulfilling a life-long dream of owning our own land. Rachel and I live for the outdoors, we work in the outdoor industry and spend every chance we get exploring our beautiful state with our two dogs. As a 4th generation Coloradan, it's been a lifelong dream to own a (relatively) small part of the state my family has called home since the late 1800s. Now that we own our own piece of Colorado heaven we want to share the unforgettable experience, memories and beauty of our property with others looking for an escape from the city.

Rustic Creek Ranch

32 sites · RVs, Tents160 acres · Bailey, CO
The 160 acre ranch was homesteaded by my grandfather over 100 years ago. He was an engineer. The plan was to use this property as summer grazing for his cattle. The cattle were wintered at the other ranch about 10 miles away, which was homesteaded by my great grandfather. Because my grandfather could survey, he made sure the property lines zigzaged up the valley so the small creek was in the middle to provide water for the animals. He chose well. It is a beautiful, quiet place with elk, deer and wild turkeys. There are tons of wild flowers in the summer. Columbines, the Colorado state flower, wild roses, paintbrushes and lots of wild chokecherries. With nice views of nearby mountains, open pastures, evergreen forests and aspen groves, it looks like it did 100 years ago. Plus, there are a couple of ponds for your dogs to cool off in. Since the first cattle, the ranch has also been home to goats, chickens, horses, and now more goats, alpacas and llamas. And of course the Great Pyrenees ranch dogs. I had a house built a few years ago and live on the property full time. The ranch is surrounded by Pike National Forest with the Colorado Trail connecting the property in a number of places. Some of the highest ranked mountain bike trails are nearby. There are lots of places on and off the property to hike, mountain bike and ride your horse. On a clear night you can see thousands of stars and hear coyotes howl. For a drone video of the ranch check out: YouTube's Midsummer 2020 Flyover. Elevation 8,000 feet, Average Summer Temperatures: Days 60-80 f, Nights 45-60 f, Sunshine Average 73-80%, Colorado Trail Segment 3, USGS Maps: Windy Peak & Green Mountain quadrangles. This is the official info. Basically, the weather is usually similar to the Denver area - just 10 degrees cooler. About 8 miles away is the small town of Bailey. It has just about everything you might need: small grocery store, coffee shops, gas, laundry, art gallery, a dollar store, hardware store, camping and sports equipment, brew pub, winery, a few restaurants, potable water station and more.

The best camping near Cheyenne Mountain State Park guide

Overview

About

Just outside busy Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Mountain State Park offers 28 miles of hiking and biking trails—many of which are dog or equestrian-friendly—along with a smattering of picnic areas, a campground, and a nearby archery range. The campground here is divided into distinct loops, many of which—including Gobbler Grove, Raptor Glen, and Swift Puma Heights offer  full hook-up sites with water, sewer, and electric. For something quieter, the Meadow Walk-In Loop offers four tucked-away sites with picnic benches.  There's also a camper services building with coin-operated showers, a laundry room, an activity room, and an adjacent playground.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve one of the campground’s 61 tent and RV sites through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife online reservation system or over the phone.
  2. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance. Same-day reservations are also available, but not in person.
  3. Only one camping unit is allowed per site, so multiple tents require multiple reservations.
  4. There are plenty of alternatives for camping in the area, including RV sites, private campgrounds, and Hipcamps, if the Cheyenne Mountain campground is full.

When to go

The most popular time to visit Cheyenne Mountain State Park is between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the weather is at its warmest. However, the park can get crowded this time of year, particularly on weekends, and the risk of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms is at its highest in July and August. September tends to be drier here, with fewer crowds once local kids are back in school. Most campsites and facilities are closed during the winter months (mid-October through mid-April).

Know before you go

  • Cheyenne Mountain State Park is situated just west of Fountain, Colorado, and about a 15-minute drive from Colorado Springs. Both areas offer plenty of options for picking up supplies and groceries.
  • All campers are required to have both a camping reservation and a separate Colorado State Parks Annual Pass or a Daily Pass.
  • Food and cookware must be stored in bear-proof containers or in your vehicle.
  • Dogs are welcome at all of the campsites as long as they are kept on a six-foot leash. Pets are also allowed on select trails, but never in the backcountry areas.
