Cold Creek is a unique 112-acre property in the San Bernardino National Forest. Because of its location in a 3,200 foot elevation, it's colder than the Southern California deserts and warmer than the cold mountains above us. Our temperatures rarely exceed 90F and rarely drop below 40F. We have plenty sun and about two to three days of snow every winter. A year-around creek keeps everything green and fresh around the year. We are the second owners since 1913, and operate a small organic orchard on the property. We are most famous for our honey, peaches and figs, but also grow apples, pears, persimmon, blackberries, greens, bay leaf, white sage and more.For years , we were WWOOF hosts (look it up ;-) and resisted opening up Cold Creek to traffic associated with daily camping arrivals, but we finally found the perfect spots for visitors to park their RVs, spend a quiet night and visit the orchard by foot.We are now excited by the prospect of focusing on expanding our micro-farming and inviting campers to look over our shoulders.

Just 15 minutes from Big Bear Lake - a large recreational, fresh-water lake for summer swimming, boating, skiing, fishing and other super fun water activities. The Ranch feels remote and private. Yet is only four miles to the town of Big Bear with shopping and restaurants. Also in close proximity to incredible rock climbing at the Pinnacles, seemingly endless hiking and biking and some pretty epic off-roading 4x4 trails. Each campsite is approximately one acre, and generously-distanced from neighboring campers. Amenities include its own fire ring with grilling grate and picnic table(s). The campsites are both cozy enough for 2 or spacious enough for large groups and can easily accommodate a mix of RVs, camper vans and tents. From June to October the 100+ area open meadow is filled with horses grazing and galloping about (please don't pet or feed!) A four-seasons destination, the Ranch has year-round experiences with warm summers and snowy winters. An excellent basecamp, within close proximity to the lake, ski slopes, Pinnacles, hiking/biking and off-roading trails. After a day filled with adventure or ultimate relaxation, be sure to enjoy the breath-taking sunsets over the meadow. The evenings blanket guests with a sea of stars. Toast up some s’mores and warm up some hot-coco over a beautiful, crackling campfire. Remember the s’mores and always follow the “Leave No Trace” principles. There are large trash bins by the entrance. We look forward to hosting you at the Ranch! Please note: OHV’s are allowed. They count as one of the allowed vehicles per campsite and must adhere to the speed limit (10mph) and remain on established camp roads while on the property. They may not be driven from 8pm to 8am. It is strictly forbidden to ride your vehicles through the forest, meadow or off any established roads on or off property. Please research which of the surrounding forestry roads allow for your vehicle type to be driven on.  Campsites on the west side of the meadow (F, G & H sites) are partially accessed by a forestry road that does not allow dirt bikes. Horses: The horses which may be roaming the meadow during your stay are not property of Holcomb Valley Ranch. When horses are present, guests and their pets are prohibited from entering the meadow. Please do not approach, interact, feed or touch the horses. This is for your safety and the safety of the horses. Do, however, take lots of photos! They make a perfect backdrop:)

Local markets also sell neck gaiters for face protection. I also have pieces of plywood with bricks that you're welcome to move and shift to fit your needs. I am in the process of building a tree/shrub wind block. There's about .4 miles of dirt road to get to the property, there are some dips to watch out for but I come out here in a little Prius so it's manageable. Overall, there is an element of seclusion but occasionally people do drive by on the dirt road. I would rate the cell phone service a 7/10, it's pretty solid but can go out at times.

I loved camping here and they were amazing hosts!! We forgot coffee mugs and they brought us coffee mugs from their house. They have friendly dogs and chickens and all sorts of goods down by their house. The site is nothing to write home about, but large and spacious. The no fires rules makes a lot of sense given how dry it is here. The location is awesome, 15 minutes away from lake gregory which is great for trout fishing. (Pro tip use garlic power bait on a carolina rig) The site is about 30 minutes from arrowhead. 10/10 stay loved everything about it and can’t stress enough how kind the hosts were!! Would stay here again anytime.

Weekend Trip to Camping @ Quail Run Ostrich Ranch

What a cool place to go camping! We were a large group staying for 2 nights to celebrate a 3 year olds birthday. We booked out all the RV/camp spaces. There was plenty of space for all of our tents and cars to fit. We found a hidden a way space in the trees to hide from the sun during the daytime, and in the mornings and nights we hung out under our canopies. Occasionally there was some wind, but luckily we had the right equipment and also found cinder blocks laying around that we used. The bathrooms were well insulated, had lights, and a sink with running water. There was toilet paper, but you may want to bring extra if you run out. The women’s bathroom had a small field mouse in it, and there were droppings, but it didn’t bother us too much. You will want to bring your own propane to use the fire pit or bbq grill. The bbq is like the types that you might have at someone’s home. The playground was nice with lots of swings and slides. There was also a play house. Everything was clean and in great condition. The ostriches were fabulous. You can faintly hear them at night, too. Some of our group did the tour and really enjoyed it. The owners came by to welcome us and also gave us an ostrich egg as a gift to the birthday boy. We made scrambled egg the next day. All in all, yes we would come back again. For the beautiful surroundings mountains, the pleasant drive through some winding roads, and a relaxed kid friendly environment. Thank you for the hospitality!

This farm is a great, quiet place to camp (flush toilets a plus). The tour of the ostrich farm is an extraordinary experience led by Lou, the senior farmer of the land, who is a zoologist passionate about his big birds. The two and half hours we spent with him were wonderfully educational and went by fast. The farm is less than a 20 minute drive to the California Poppy state reserve park.

Weekend Trip to Cold Creek Homestead

Awesome location and setting. Sitting at 3000 ft, you can enjoy the cool breeze without dealing with altitude issues, occasional snow. I would have love to stop by when fresh apples and figs were being sold. Close enough to civilization not needing high clearance vehicle but nestled in such a way that you feel you are far away from the rat race. Ill be back!
