Drink in the hibiscus sunrises above the Painted Desert and relax into the long shadows of the San Francisco Peaks. Back to basics with endless desert sky. Hike giant rock sculptures, gather petrified wood, maybe find the hidden pond or seasonal Little Colorado to splash in . Bathed in the Canyon's ethereal ambiance, powdery views of Navajo Plateau and snowy San Francisco Peaks await. This is “Stone Soup,” in honor of unique geology and a folktale where everyone brings something to make a whole greater than its parts. A hut, built with love during musical campouts, materials are recycled from building sites may be available, on a first-come first serve basis, but please don't count on anything being there but the open land and sky. There are 40 acres to explore and camp on. You can follow the property boundaries, or just head straight out from the hut away from the road or on the other side of the road for at least half a mile and camp anywhere. You can drive all over the land in a regular vehicle and find your spot. If you do use the hut, please leave it in better shape than you found it. Same with the land. Here is my vision: Adventurous, creative, nature-loving kindred souls can converge on these 40 acres and bring what they need but also share with one another (the stone soup spirit). Although you do need to take in and out everything (water, food, bedding...) and there is no outhouse at the moment (dunes for some privacy, and thinly bury your waste), you can drive anywhere on the land and have what you need in your vehicle. It sometimes gets windy, so car-camping is recommended over tents, though you can also bring your RV. Basically at the moment, this is an isolated, wild campsite, with total peace and quiet but where you bring everything. There is no running water, cooking supplies, or toilet. You may find firewood further down the road, and can have a fire anytime, but nothing is supplied. You will need to take your trash with you. The photos are not up to date and still show amenities that are not there. The hut may be available, but it is just a structure with no door. Also note that there is no way to get there with Google maps/ GPS coordinate. I will send detailed directions if you book, but you probably want to arrive with some daylight. If prepared to rough it, it's a gorgeous site with open sky, amazing views, stars, rocks, and silence.

This campsite is 3.7 miles from Grand Canyon Junction for food, gas, water, and supplies, and 30 miles to Grand Canyon National Park. There are two sites with fire pits and campfires are allowed but may be restricted during certain times when warm temperatures and high winds are forecasted. Please bring a shovel to clear the fire pit out if there is sand or leftover wood in it. Other things to note: From Highway 64, travel 0.85 miles east on Pine Rd to reach the property. The dirt road has some bumps but is accessible with a 2WD car when the road is dry but 4WD is recommended when there is snow or rain. Also, since you will be traveling on an unmarked dirt road, it is advised to reach the campsite before dark so it easier to locate. There are no toilets or water so campers will need to bring their own accommodations. Pack in and pack out policy applies. Back to basics with endless desert sky. Hike giant rock sculptures, gather petrified wood, maybe find the hidden pond or seasonal Little Colorado to splash in . Bathed in the Canyon's ethereal ambiance, powdery views of Navajo Plateau and snowy San Francisco Peaks await. This is “Stone Soup,” in honor of unique geology and a folktale where everyone brings something to make a whole greater than its parts. A hut, built with love during musical campouts, materials are recycled from building sites may be available, on a first-come first serve basis, but please don't count on anything being there but the open land and sky. There are 40 acres to explore and camp on. You can follow the property boundaries, or just head straight out from the hut away from the road or on the other side of the road for at least half a mile and camp anywhere. You can drive all over the land in a regular vehicle and find your spot. If you do use the hut, please leave it in better shape than you found it. Same with the land. Here is my vision: Adventurous, creative, nature-loving kindred souls can converge on these 40 acres and bring what they need but also share with one another (the stone soup spirit). Although you do need to take in and out everything (water, food, bedding...) and there is no outhouse at the moment (dunes for some privacy, and thinly bury your waste), you can drive anywhere on the land and have what you need in your vehicle. It sometimes gets windy, so car-camping is recommended over tents, though you can also bring your RV. Basically at the moment, this is an isolated, wild campsite, with total peace and quiet but where you bring everything. There is no running water, cooking supplies, or toilet. You may find firewood further down the road, and can have a fire anytime, but nothing is supplied. You will need to take your trash with you. The photos are not up to date and still show amenities that are not there. The hut may be available, but it is just a structure with no door. Also note that there is no way to get there with Google maps/ GPS coordinate. I will send detailed directions if you book, but you probably want to arrive with some daylight. If prepared to rough it, it's a gorgeous site with open sky, amazing views, stars, rocks, and silence.

There was something special about the GCO. Basics first: Adam was super friendly and a great host; the property is quiet and clean. There is some road noise, but I ran a fan for white noise and used ear plugs and got great sleep. The extras: the lodge is a great, eclectically decorated spot with sofas, a TV, pool table, among other cool items (nice space to have, especially when you're traveling in a van). The views from Desert View are unobstructed and amazing. Don't miss the show when the sun sets! It literally changes minute to minute. The night skies are amazing as well. I can see why this is hollowed ground in the Native American culture. Don't hesitate to stay here; I'll be back for sure when I'm back in that region.

This spot was ideal for a one-night stop on my way to Sedona. All of the animals are very calm and friendly with people, especially the horses. The view of the mountains and stars is really beautiful. Holly and her family are very kind and welcoming, and also allow visitors their own space. I stayed at Sunset camp which is a patch near the gate, good for self-contained car/tent camping. Heard the roosters in the morning! Rustic and cool spot.

About

Sunset Crater many get its name from the volcanic rim's brilliant red rocks, but there's more to explore see than just the volcano. The park also contains unique geologic features like lava fields and cinder deposits. Features so unique that NASA astronauts once used this area to practice piloting the lunar rover!

Start your journey at the visitor center, where you can watch a quick video exploring the history and formation of the volcano. Traveling with children? Pick up a Junior Ranger Book so kids can complete activities and earn a Junior Ranger badge.

From the visitor's center, walk the Lava's Edge Trail which passes by the Bonito Lava Flow. The trail then carries on to the main attraction—Sunset Crater. Due to erosion, hiking to the top is prohibited. Instead, you can hike near the base on the Lava Flow Trail. This one-mile loop trail also has amazing views of the nearby San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountain range in Arizona.
