Make friends with a farmer!!
Thanks Jay for the opportunity to stay at your Farm! The site was great and very private and spacious with a good shady spot for the tent and easy access to water and electricity. The site has a fire ring and Jay's bundle of wood is hard wood, well dried and was enough to last the evening. There was very little street traffic and so the sense of quiet and calm was pervasive. We enjoyed our chats with Jay - he is knowledgeable about the land, the area's history and the communities there. Highly recommend and hope to be back again.

I cannot recommend Shine & Rise farm enough! Our campsite was spacious and completely private. Also, we got there a little later than expected and the string lights made it easy to set up our tent in the dark.
Jay and Tatum were lovely. We loved learning about them and their vision for the farm. If you’re looking for a unique place to stay, look no further!

This was wonderful. All around. Jay is an incredible host. He is easy to get along with and very accommodating. The campsites are beautiful, acres apart from each other it’s about as private as you can get. Very safe and welcoming. Highly recommend.

Nestled in the tall forest.
It was a wonderful site, and we are very thankful full Jay was able to meet us even though we were a bit late. our site had the party lights and power which was a big help. Surrounded by a forest of oh-so-tall trees. A sight for sore eyes for this central Texas couple.

This farm and property were lovely and well set up and maintained. Jay and his family were wonderful. They let us see their goslings and recommended the best beach area for our family to explore. (Savage Neck Dunes State Natural Area - a perfect half mile hike to a cool beach area with lots of drift wood trees my kids liked exploring.) We definitely recommend camping here!

Charming wooded camp spot, sweet!
Jay's place is great and he's very friendly and welcoming. We felt safe and comfortable with all the amenities he has set up at the camp spot, like electricity if you need it and a big platform to set up camp on (or perform a dance recital haha).
We pulled in a little later than expected but just before dark - he met us on the road and took us to the spot - it's got a fantastic fire pit and Jay has wood available (which I'd always recommend since you don't want to take wood from other forests, it's always a risk to transfer foreign bugs to a new ecosystem.)
The fireflies were an amazing show and we walked a little trail after the rain cleared up in the morning, but we didn't make it to tour his farm (we'll be back and looking forward to it!) We roasted some of his delicious yellow squash for dinner over the fire and it was super tasty. Thanks, Jay!

Private site in a stand of oaks
Very private site in a stand of oaks with no sights or sounds of people, near a back road but very little traffic. About 20 minute drive to a nature preserve on the Bay with a nice stretch of beach. Theory and policy meets practice at the working farm where there's lots to learn about sustainable agriculture.

Perfect spot!
We loved camping at Shine and Rise! It was great waking up hearing turkeys in the morning. We had so much space to spread out and it was totally private. My sons got to explore the woods and make s’mores each night. There were so many fireflies and the stars were amazing. We also really liked the 2 beaches we visited about a half hour away. Having a fresh water source at our site was nice too as we needed to clean off after a hot day at the beach. We would definitely visit again!

We had a great time camping here! It's a spacious and quiet campground, plenty of flat space for tents including a platform, and has electricity if needed. Lots of great stuff in the area to do along the coast. Owners were incredibly nice and we plan to come back again!

I had a great stay at Shine and Rise Farm! The campsite is terrific and the farm itself is amazing. I had never been to Virginia's Eastern Shore, and it's a fascinating place. Jay recommended a great place for hiking, Savage Neck Dunes in Cape Charles, a beautiful spot which helped me understand the landscape and environment of the area.
I'd gladly camp here again!

Jays place was so sweet! My partner and I stayed there with our dog and there was lots of room to run around. Jay gave us a great recommendation for a swimming spot and he and his family were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to go back!

Great family camping
Our family of four (boys 2 & 4 yrs) had a great stay at Shine & Rise. Early Oct delivered perfect weather — comfortably cool, almost no rain and no mosquitos! Spacious, wooded camp site not visible to any others on the property. Handy platform and benches. Jay and is family are very friendly and welcoming and easy to communicate with.

Awesome way to relax and unplug
We spent my birthday weekend here just relaxing and taking a break from our busy lives. The site was large, private and clean and Jay was a great host. There are wooded paths to walk and we also walked through the farm area and saw all of the animals. We found a large Antique Mall not far from the camp and there are also several boat ramps within a 10 or 15 minute drive. We would definitely stay here again.

Peaceful and oh so Cozy
This has been an all time favorite stay of mine! I recently got into hipcamp but have been finding campsites for a while now and this place is great if you want camping but with something special added. The site itself was so spacious and having electrical was nice to refresh a few charging bricks. My partner and I have been on a trek across the east coast and this camp was one after just under a week of others. If you're looking for a camp that feels like a perfect blend of woodsy and comfort I would recommend here a thousand times over.

Wonderful
We really liked this farm. It is a nice place to stay even if you are just looking for a wooded, fairly secluded campsite. But if you are into sustainable agriculture, it is a real treat. I'm not sure i've seen a real, working farmer as knowledgeable about and committed to permaculture practices as Jay. It is an inspiration.
As an added bonus, my three-year-old and her friend loved the extremely friendly ducks and turkeys.
Take note, our site had no potable water, bathroom, porta-potty, latrine, or anything. We dug holes in the woods to do our business. We were fine with that, but not everyone is, so be aware. Also, if you roll in late at night, be sure to have water with you so you don't have to make the walk for it until daylight.

Definitely choose this place!
The pictures don’t do this place justice. It’s absolutely amazing. Jay is a salt of the earth person with a wonderful heart. I’m so glad I could stay the night here. I wish I could’ve stayed longer and enjoy the farm more. It’s a truly magical place.

Labor day weekend camping!
Jay and his family were awesome! He met us on the street and showed us to our campsite. The site was exactly as advertised and well enough off the road that we could feel like it was our own little piece of paradise for labor day weekend. He also hooked us up with some wood for our fire. The family gave us a tour of their farm and even introduced us to some fruits we had never heard of. 10 out of 10 would highly recomend!!!

We are grateful for Jay, for his family and for the land where we camped for a few nights. Jay is gracious, resourceful, dynamic, and bright, and you can tell that these attributes are well reflected in the land that is being stewarded by this family with care and joy. We chose this farm as a stop off point between the Outer Banks and Maryland and found a lot of clarity in being here. We are hoping to one day also help to heal the land we inhabit and to share it with others who need peace and space. I highly recommend taking a farm tour with Jay and learning about his environmental justice work and plant knowledge. The site was clean and spacious with a generous fire pit with an electrical hookup and a really nice hose. 10/10 recommend.

This is a great place to stay. Our site was ringed with fairy lights when we arrived. There is a platform if you want one. Very private, wooded site.
A gracious host, who is happy to tell you about his farm and provide info on things to do in the area. There is a supermarket and a hardware store nearby for all the stuff you forgot,
We would definitely stay there again.

Camping in the woods AND getting to visit an organic farm? Best of both worlds! My partner, dog & I had a lovely unique stay at Shine & Rise. Highly recommended and get the farm share box!
