Right off the bat, our host Mike is among the chillest you'll ever meet. Down-to-earth, super kind, attentive, and definitely active! He welcomed everyone personally, shared his vision with the place, and even prepped some amazing chicken for us one night! I met some crazy cool people, travellers and locals, and remember a fun night around the fire pit with plenty guitar and singing. I love camping and hiking, but you will leave this place with a love for this unique Terlingua hangout, the locals, and the friends you make here!

Temple of the Bird is awesome! Mike is a super friendly and helpful host and it is so close to everything in Terlingua and BBNP! We had such a great time we ended up staying an extra night to enjoy it a little longer!

If you are looking to get the local flavor of Terlingua, Mike’s place is your spot. If you just want to show up and never really experience what life in Terlingua is life, there are lots of spots for that. But at Mike’s you get the real deal. His place is new but it feels like what old Terlingua was all about.

I absolutely loved camping at Temple of the Bird!! Would totally recommend staying here rather than a campground, even if it’s inside the park. There’s showers (hot water!!), a community kitchen, and WiFi!! The owner is very kind, welcoming, and extremely accommodating!
The community is great. Every night the current travelers are cuddled up around the fire telling their travel stories or where they’ve come from. It’s a great environment to meet strangers and feel at home immediately. There was even some free soup and drinks the night we came. The vibes are amazing. Would definitely stay here again if I pass by the area over any Airbnb, hotel, or campground that’s more expensive.

Did the group camp site at the top of the hill and it had an amazing view. Plenty of space and an only a short walk to the shared space. The shared space kitchen and dining area was wicked cool. Plenty of space. Made it in time one night to enjoy some music and fire. Mike was groovy and all the guests were respectful

We had such a great stay here - we took our ev and charged overnight in the rv space, which was great - 50 amp rv spaces were newly graded, private, and a quick walk from the bathrooms and community room./deck. Mike is a really gracious host and the community space was so nice to stretch out - and there was a bonfire with musicians singing and playing late into the night - so lovely. Highly recommended!

Mike's place offered a perfect combo of tent camping along with conveniences to make this a great visit to the desert. Full bathroom with showers, use of the kitchen facilities and cooking appliances, WiFi with coverage out to the tent sites, electricity to charge the phone, plus use of the covered areas to chill out after a day of hiking in Big Bend NP. And not to mention Mike is a really great guy who really cares about the traveler, having been a traveler himself. I would definitely stay at the Temple of the Bird again if I visit the area again!

Temple of the Bird was one of those places that immediately makes you feel like you’ve stepped into something special. From the moment we arrived, Mike made us feel completely at home. He was an incredible host and struck the perfect balance between being welcoming, attentive, and genuinely funny. His sense of humor really sets the tone for the whole place and adds so much character to the experience.
What we loved most was how local and authentic everything felt. It wasn’t just a place to stay. It felt like being welcomed into the spirit of the area. The amenities were top tier and thoughtfully done, but the atmosphere still felt relaxed and personal rather than overdone.
And the views of the Chisos Mountains are second to none. Waking up and looking out over that landscape is something we won’t forget.
Temple of the Bird has this perfect mix of comfort, personality, and a little bit of magic. Between the beautiful space, the incredible views, and Mike’s hospitality, it turned into a stay we won’t forget. If you’re looking for something unique that truly feels like a local experience, this is it.

I didn’t know what to expect booking this spot as a solo traveler. Honestly, I was a bit nervous. But once I arrived, Mike pulled up to meet me and showed me around the coolest spot ever. The bunk was comfortable, bathroom/showers were super nice, the outdoor space that is decorated with so much character and a kitchen area with everything you need. I will be staying again and bringing friends to hang out there next time. Mike is awesome, great guy with a big personality, just like Temple of the Bird. 10 out of 10

Mike is a wonderful human being and has created a revolving community of souls here that is difficult to describe, like being in the middle of a big hug and I LOVED IT. The site is stunning and creative, full of kitschy art, cacti, indoor/outdoor living spaces, fire pits, music stages, and has the best panoramic view of the mountain ranges, desert, and its walking proximity to Terlingua Ghost Town is super sweet. Definitely going to fly my bird here again soon!

Mike’s spot was great and he clearly enjoys hosting and has created a common space that is true to the Terlingua experience. I’m more of a keep to myself person, but appreciated the warm welcome and his setup. It is walking distance to the main action in town on ‘the porch’ by the Starlight. But it’s easy to see that some nights the entertainment right at his place will be just as good or better. It’s a great spot now but it’s easy to see that he is continually improving it and your stay will likely be even better than mine as a result.

Temple of the Bird is not only a great location in the Ghost Town, it has spectacular views of the Chisos, and Mike is an excellent host. If you are lucky, you will be there when there is a concert or an impromptu gathering of locals. It is truly a kick-ass place.

The Bird is so unique!!! Coolest place in Terlingua and Terlingua is the coolest place in Texas. Mike is also the GOAT. Enough said. If you enjoy laughter, friendship, sharing stories by the fire under the stars, then you should stay here.

This place is more than just a RV site or a place to stay it’s a community experience, Right in the heart of terlingua ghost town. Mike the onwer has created such a great place here. We stayed the weekend and met so many cool and interesting people whether local to terlingua or other tourist passing through. There was a community fire pit where one night we all hung out and played songs and told stories under the stars. It was such a refreshing and beautiful time. Mike is the nicest person ever who sees you has a friend staying at his place, not just a tourist. He made dinners and hung out and his playlist is awesome! I told my friends anytime I go to Terlingua i refuse to stay anywhere else but the Temple of the bird. If you are looking for community and connection this is the place for you. Thank you Mike! 🖕

Temple of the bird is one of the coolest campsites/hostels grounds I’ve ever been to. It was super welcoming and chill. If you like music, people, and good vibes I’d recommend staying here. The only caveat is it’s a 45 m drive to the national park HOWEVER it is so close to the gas station and a lot of restaurants and bars. I’d highly recommend this place to anyone I know. The decor is goofy and funny and will make this place memorable. Also, the sunrise view you get of the chisos mountains you get is amazing. I did this with a friend and felt super safe as a woman. !!!

This hostel is amazing! We will be back. Mike makes you feel at home. Super rad gathering spaces. Hot showers. Full kitchen available for use, plus a grill and blackstone. Close access to Big Bend.

Great host. Awesome place. Very accommodating and nice, epic views, nice fire pit, great group of people, the owner offered us gumbo and red beans and rice, we hung out by the fire at night, played acoustic guitar and sang with some strangers, very happy, nice people. Camp sites are nice and spread out. Beautiful views.
