We loved Mike's place! It had a wonderful down-to-Earth vibe that made us feel instantly welcome. The beds were cozy, clean and comfy. Mike was a very dedicated host who put our satisfaction at the top of his to-do list. We hope to visit again sometime in the future!

If you do pick Terlingua, there is no better place to stay than Temple of the Bird. Mike is an incredible person, and once you hear his unique story, you will understand why he is the perfect host. There are accommodations here for any traveler, which lends itself to meeting unique people and having a truly one of a kind experience.
Temple of the Bird is an oasis in the desert for artists, musicians, cyclists, writers, and respite for all who wander. Centrally located in the perfect spot to explore and soak in the beauty of the majestic Big Bend with an unfettered view of the Chisos Mountains. It's a gathering place for locals and guests visiting the historic Terlingua Ghost Town. Come to connect and comune with other intriguing souls, including the nesting roadrunners who continue to raise their fledgelings on the premises. The Temple never dissapoints!

I loved everything about Temple of the Bird. The bunkhouse was perfect for my group. Mike is a great host. We will definitely stay there again.

Great spot, great view, great host, great vibe, highly recommended!
Quiet, far enough from ghost town revelry to be quite peaceful. Big stars of course, beautiful views. My only issue is - we could not find the place. Host was unresponsive. I lived in Terlingua for quite some time and have rarely been that lost. But, maybe it is a good thing. I think so. But when we got to the site, no markings on spots. More confusion for 2 exhausted folks. Also, no coffee! And no bar on memorial day weekend? The second one maybe good, because more quiet. But no coffee? Deal breaker. Still, we truly enjoyed it and are grateful to our hosts. Beautiful place and we would recommend and return.
This place is fabulous. It’s not fancy and that’s exactly what we like. The fancy comes from making new friends while hanging out in the big barn, having a cold beverage watching the sunrise or sunset and gazing at the stars from an outdoor bed. OH! And reading all the hilarious signs! Mike is constantly creating new and interesting spaces for his guests. We can’t wait to come back to see what’s happening at the Temple of the Bird. There was even a real live roadrunner nesting in a plant. We watched the mom and dad take turns feeding the babies. I guess they knew they would be safe there. We will definitely stay here again. And again!
We had a great time at Temple of the Bird. It was our kind of place. Clean bathroom and showers. Beautiful views. It had all of the amenities we needed. Mike is a good host. We will be back!

I stayed a few nights in the Left Wing and I'd do it again. Great bed and the window unit kept it cold even though it was 100 outside. Great communal bathrooms with showers, very clean. The best part is the stage area, it was great for our group event. Hope to do it again next year.

An amazing experience with an incredible host. You are in the desert, so don’t expect the Hilton. However, the people here are unique and amazing.
From the moment I booked, communication from Mike, the owner, was clear, prompt, and helpful. When I arrived, he welcomed me warmly, gave me a tour, and showed me to my campsite, setting the tone for an easy and enjoyable stay.
The atmosphere around the community center was inviting, with fellow solo campers gathering and connecting. The community kitchen was exceptionally well equipped— such a pleasant surprise. I brought groceries and ended up cooking each night, which turned into a great way to meet people and feel part of the community.
The WiFi was strong, the bathrooms were spotless, and Mike was a genuinely gracious host throughout. The campsite is within walking distance of town, and I found myself heading in often for coffee, breakfast, or just to take photos.
I was lucky enough to visit during a meteor shower and spent an evening stretched out under the stars— it was unforgettable. As a solo female tent camper, I felt completely safe and comfortable the entire time.
Mornings were just as special, starting with sunrise yoga on the band platform. This place would be ideal for a yoga or art retreat. The vibe is laid-back, community-minded, and thoughtfully sustainable.
If you’re planning a trip to Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park, this place truly has everything. With great restaurants, fun bars, a vibrant artist community, and some of the kindest people in Terlingua, you can book with confidence— this is the place to be!

Mike’s place is a safe, chill space for a solo traveler to stay, and the folks there are excellent company if you’re looking for it. I think he’s built something really beautiful out there.

Our view of the sunrise, sunset and the stars was unrivaled to any experience I have had before. Mike has a great setup that offers community of connecting with fellow travelers in the shared space there. He encouraged us to hike Santa Elena Canyon Trail in Big Bend and it was a spectacular experience. Having a shared kitchen there allowed us to connect with others save time so we could explore. Another Mike there recommended Old Maverick Road since we had an AWD, and it saved us time as well as allowing us to check out more of the park. He also recommended taking hwy 170 when we headed to our next stop in Carlsbad and it was a breathtaking drive. These conversations and connections are what makes Temple of the Bird a very special place. Mike is super accommodating and responsive. We tent camped but if traveling without wanting to have that setup, I wouldn’t hesitate to rent out one of the other spaces. He graciously let me use the one bedroom unit for a video call and it was clean and cool with A/C. Mike gave us recommendations on where to eat in town and all were delicious. We were able to put our leftovers in the fridge to eat the next day. We would definitely stay there again!
Right off the bat, our host Mike is among the chillest you'll ever meet. Down-to-earth, super kind, attentive, and definitely active! He welcomed everyone personally, shared his vision with the place, and even prepped some amazing chicken for us one night! I met some crazy cool people, travellers and locals, and remember a fun night around the fire pit with plenty guitar and singing. I love camping and hiking, but you will leave this place with a love for this unique Terlingua hangout, the locals, and the friends you make here!

Temple of the Bird is awesome! Mike is a super friendly and helpful host and it is so close to everything in Terlingua and BBNP! We had such a great time we ended up staying an extra night to enjoy it a little longer!

Good vibes and great location that’s near Big Bend. A lot of amenities to use including full kitchen, showers, and WiFi. Everyone is so friendly too. Can’t wait to go back and sit by the campfire again!
If you are looking to get the local flavor of Terlingua, Mike’s place is your spot. If you just want to show up and never really experience what life in Terlingua is life, there are lots of spots for that. But at Mike’s you get the real deal. His place is new but it feels like what old Terlingua was all about.

I absolutely loved camping at Temple of the Bird!! Would totally recommend staying here rather than a campground, even if it’s inside the park. There’s showers (hot water!!), a community kitchen, and WiFi!! The owner is very kind, welcoming, and extremely accommodating!
The community is great. Every night the current travelers are cuddled up around the fire telling their travel stories or where they’ve come from. It’s a great environment to meet strangers and feel at home immediately. There was even some free soup and drinks the night we came. The vibes are amazing. Would definitely stay here again if I pass by the area over any Airbnb, hotel, or campground that’s more expensive.
