We are about 30 minutes away from Joe Pool Lake, Six Flags, the Texas Rangers Ballpark, and Scarborough Renaissance Festival. Our land is private land that has been in the family for many decades. We have a variety of events that happen here, including two festivals, one in September and one in November, November, so you will notice there are stages and even a saloon here on site. We have all kinds of wildlife in the area including crows, a great horned owl, night herons, a mated pair of marsh hawks, roadrunners, coyotes, bobcats, skunks, armadillos, bunnies, a fox every now and then, and all kinds of birds flitting about. If you camp with us during either of our festivals, you will also have to purchase festival admission tickets to attend.

It has various trees on property with cedar, live oak, post oak, etc. Campsites are in front of a wide waterfall which is about 5 feet in height. You can fall asleep with the sound of the waterfalls! We have three ground tent sites and two 14 by 14 deck sites if you want to be up off the ground. Each site has a fire ring and electricity. There are well-marked trails across the creek which go to a meadow and a big treehouse I built several years ago. Glen Rose has several restaurants known for barbecue and Mexican food. The campsites were easy to get to. Lots of land to explore. Randall was very kind and accommodating. The kids had a blast. They made dances with a mimicking emu near the entrance. We had a blast. Nice to get outside not too far out of Dallas. Can’t wait to visit again when the weather is warmer and try paddling gear and visit the safari nearby.

We loved camping here. This may be the best place you can camp that is less than an hour from downtown Dallas. Randall is an excellent host. Trails for small hikes with dogs and kids and a couple of ponds. Lots of wildlife. There is a safari place right across the street which is closed in the winter but we could see some of the animals walking around by the road. It was very cold and Randall had plenty of firewood at the site. Look forward to coming back in the summer when we can play in the lake and explore more.

It was easy to find the location & your own numbered campsite. Each area has a clear flat space for your tent, a fire ring, and constant 12v power socket + two 2.1amp USB ports, and temporary 110ac if you enable it. There is a shared washroom with 2 stalls. One has a urinal, toilet, and shower. The has just a toilet. Outside the stalls is a sink. All the campsites are close to each other, so I imagine it would be great for large groups with their own tents. It was a quiet weekday, so I pretty much had the entire area to myself, but mostly kept to my own area. The area is a covered forest (mostly cedar, some oak) and is beautiful. You can hear the close waterfall and the distant highway. When it gets dark, there are no lights around, so plan to bring some if you want to see after sunset. You can see the stars very well if you walk towards the water. There is a hiking trail across the water. There are maps in the washroom building. There was a yellow rope to mark the trailhead. Watch your step. The meadow, trail, and treehouse are all quite lovely.

Absolutely awesome! Beautiful property and Barry was an outstanding host. He went above and beyond to take care of us, and the value of our time there greatly exceeded the cost. We were going to be getting in late and it was going to be a super cold night, and because he had no other guests that night, he graciously offered to let us stay in the Daisy at no extra cost! This would never be an expectation, but it was very kind of him. It was very clean and obviously well taken care of. We wish we had more time there to hang out and soak it more up, but this was just a quick trip passing through for us. We hope to visit again sometime soon!

Beautiful and private! We stayed at camp site #4 because we read it was the most private our of all of them. With that though, it was the farthest from the bath house and a bit of a hike to get there (about 6-7 min walk), so we just drove if we really had to go or when it got dark and cold at night. We wished we could have stayed longer to explore the hiking paths and will definitely be back!

Wow! This place is spectacular! The waterfall is the eye catcher…but the entire set up is a whole new level of camping! Every site had power, trash cans, and the facilities were very well built! The wagon to bring your stuff from parking lot to site was a very nice touch! It was my son’s first camping trip, and this has set a very high bar! We will be back to explore the creek and enjoy the waterfall’s magic sounds!

Weekend Trip to Hideout Ridge

The entire grounds was a haven for us. My granddaughter & I came for the weekend and camped at site 4, which we loved! We hiked 1.6 miles and still didn’t get to explore all the trails. It was serene, quiet and I felt safe. We could hear cows, cocks & a train in the distance. The road to the campsites felt like you are going through a maze with the tall, bordered grass. We are so grateful that Allison has opened up her land to let us enjoy a wonderful getaway. We will be coming back for a treehouse stay in the spring, hopefully we’ll get a chance to paddleboat since it was filled with muddy water. That was what attracted me to the hideout with a little one. But our main reason for getting out to that area was to visit a state park which was full so this was the perfect & better place to stay. The bathhouse!!! Oh, the beautiful bathhouse! Even my 7 year old was fascinated by the visual elements… now I want one just like it!

melissa’s spot is super cute and comfy, and she and family were very gracious and accommodating hosts despite us arriving late on xmas eve. we (2 people and an elderly dog) had everything we needed for some good rest, a campfire, and grilling a delicious dinner. melissa also had plenty of useful local tips, and WOW the breakfast sandwich was so good! would stay again 🤗

Incredible lil camping spot. The nearby water was beautiful and the treehouse at the end of the trail was something else! Definitely would love to use this campground again for future trips. Be aware that the campsites are situated near to each other - we got lucky and were the only ones there the night of our experience.

About

Just 30 minutes from downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, Cedar Hill State Park provides a pocket of greenery for urban campers looking to get out of town. Lush prairies, wildflower-speckled hills, and ancient cedar forests fringe the shores of the 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake, where you can swim, boat, kayak, or fish for largemouth black bass, crappie, and catfish. Miles of hiking and mountain biking trails may tempt you away from the water, as will tours of the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center. Campers have five campgrounds to choose from, or you can opt to get back to nature at a walk-in primitive campsite.

Notable campgrounds

Best for lake views: Hog Wallow Campground has 50 sites—some of which are right by the lake—with picnic tables, fire rings, and full hookups.
Best for peace and quiet: Shady Ridge Campground has spacious sites for tents and RVs away from the crowds.
Best for backcountry hikers: Cedar Hill’s primitive campsites are reachable only on foot and lie along the Duck Pond and Talala trails.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve one of the park’s 350 developed campsites in advance via the Texas State Parks website.
Campsite reservations open five months in advance, and popular sites can book up fast, especially for summer and holiday weekends. Book at least three months in advance—even earlier if you have a specific spot in mind.
Primitive sites are first-come, first-served, and there are 30 spots up for grabs—the main gates open at 6am, so get there early to avoid disappointment.

When to go

Cedar Hill State Park is open year-round, and there are highlights for campers in each season. Wildflowers bloom across the prairies in spring, while summer is the ideal time for swimming and water sports, and autumn and winter offer the best bird-watching opportunities. The park can get busy in summer, so make an early start to get a jump on the crowds.

Know before you go

Cedar Hill State Park is located 20 miles southwest of downtown Dallas, or about a 25-minute drive away.
Park entrance fees and overnight activity fees are required in addition to camping fees. General entrance reservations can be made up to one month in advance and are recommended, especially for summer weekends.
Facilities in the park include restrooms, picnic benches, and a playground. You can purchase groceries, firewood, and camping supplies in Cedar Hill, a 5-minute drive away.
Campsites all have electricity, hot showers, water, and fire rings. Some sites also have sewer hookups, and others are ADA-accessible.

Hog Wallow Campground

We enjoyed this site. It sits a bit above the lake so has great views and feels quite relaxing. The showers and facilities are nice, and some very good hiking trails on the south end of the park!

Shady Ridge Campground

If you are looking for a great weekend getaway but don't have a lot of time to getaway, this is your place. Cedar Hill is right in the middle of DFW but you are far enough out of the city to get some nature time. The historical farm has activities and programs for kids, and the hiking is not bad. My family loves this park for a quick getaway!
