IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: The river edge erosion wall construction is complete. The area is being prepared to have additional river sites added sometime in 2026 depending on vegetation growth. The entire Beach (R3 & R4) will be closed to Campers starting October 1. This is due to hunting season starting. Campsites in the main campground will be still available, but guests are not allowed on the lower 40. Contact Cal or check our Facebook page and web site for more information. The campground and rental house will open about May 15, each year. The English Pale Campground is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all. The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property. In late summer of 2025 an erosion wall was built along the Black River. This included clearing of a section of the forest, building a gravel access road and an riprap river wall to prevent further erosion. Since 2016 over 60 feet of the riverbank has washed away. Our property offers a reasonable expectation of privacy and we do not offer day passes as our target guests are campers. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground, as that is not our central theme. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Part of our nature is allowing discreet nudity for tanning purposes. While we target couples for time together, singles and groups are welcome. We were really happy to get to sleep test a Road Toad, and Cary’s tour of the Camp Inns and the factory was awesome. Campsite and fire rings great, even pre-raked the area for us so there weren’t leaves near fire. Loved having a hot shower available before returning to spaces full of other humans. On our walk at the Wildlife Refuge, we saw trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes 🙂 There is some highway noise and there are some lights , for those who are sensitive to either, but we still had lots of stars on our first night!

As stated in every other review, the camping spot is very scenic, nature filled and beautiful. Gregory is great as a host as he let us have our privacy, but checked in as we were driving or walking by. Just a note to get to the site: when you pull in the driveway, turn left and drive in front of the house. Then right after the house take a right and that trail leads you back into the woods by the river. I think he has a map that works great. Lacrosse and Lake Crescent are not far from this site if you wanna make a trip into town. The site itself is very open no backing up as needed. Just pull in where you wanna be. Big enough for a couple of campers and tents.

Christine and her place were wonderful! So friendly and accommodating and the barn is absolutely adorable! So many sweet details and incredibly clean and comfortable! Shared the back bedroom with my kiddo with no problems and a grandparent stayed in the smaller bedroom and we were all very comfortable! The animals were wonderful and the location and property are absolutely beautiful! The cleanest and nicest port-a-potty I have ever seen! Highly recommend and we just tried some of Christine's Christmas pickles and they are delicious!

A Phenomenally Beautiful Campsite with a lot of Area to Set up your Camp. The Streams were Gorgeous and Had Beautiful Sunsets. Gregory Drove to our Campsite in the early morning, waking us up, to Advise my Husband and Myself of the Rising Waters and the Next Huge Storm Surge coming our way! This is Unheard of, That A Man not only Checked out his Land, he Informed us of the Big Storms and Concerning Weather On the Front. Also, Delivered our Farm Fresh Eggs to our Campsite! Highly recommended!

Long story short: great site, great host, 100% recommend. BIG site. Lots of room for either multiple tents or just choosing a perfect location for a single tent. Very level ground as well. The trout stream is small, but very fishable. I had a blast fly fishing the water right at the campsite, as well as the mile of public water upstream of the site. The site is private, but I wouldn’t call it “secluded”. There are a couple other houses and a main road nearby. I would compare the general noise level similar to what you’d find in a suburban neighborhood. In my opinion, this is actually more acceptable than what I’ve found in popular state park campgrounds, which often have “party noise” later into the night, and much closer neighbors making noise. Once the sun goes down, this site is quiet and sleep came easy. I opted to have an early check in time as well as a dozen fresh eggs from the camp host’s chickens and ducks. I had fresh duck eggs for breakfast for the first time…they were great! The camp host couldn’t have been better. Just a regular guy that didn’t interfere with my stay at all. Communication through the app was very good and really all that was needed. I did speak with him briefly in person and it was a pleasant conversation.

Quiet site with firewood and access to a bathroom and a great shower. Instructions were clear and I appreciated the welcome. Had access to wifi close to the building where the bathroom was. Only downside was I had very spotty cell service at my site, but that was nothing to do with the site itself.
