Camp Escape

20 sites · Tents80 acres · Merrill, WI
Deep in the backwoods of rural Wisconsin, Camp Escape is an excellent spot to disconnect with the 21st century and get completely off grid. At this camp, you'll find spectacular lakeside views and shelter from pine trees for complete isolation. Here’s a chance to test your wilderness skills. There’s 70 acres of private forest and four kettle lakes at your disposal, so getting to know your surroundings must be top of the list. You can putter around on the water in rowing boats and canoes (both free for campers to use), hike the extensive trails through the Northwoods, and end the night by the campfire. Beyond camp, there’s a whole wilderness of 5,000 acres just begging to be explored; take a backpack and hike or horseback ride into the forest, or rent an ATV or snowmobile for winter adventures in the hills. At the end of the day, though, there’s probably nothing better than sitting on a wooden dock overlooking a lake and contemplating the wilderness as the sun sets. No-fuss amenities at this back-to-nature campground include fire rings, wooden tables, and parking by each site. Gas cylinders are available, but there’s no drinking water so you'll need to bring your own. The perfect site for the great outdoors adventurer.

Rustic Log Cabin Retreat

6 sites · Lodging160 acres · Neillsville, WI
Enjoy a stay at our rustic log cabins nestled 1/2 mile back from our residence in the peaceful woods of our family's 160-acre 5th generation farm. The fall is a very special time of year here with the maples and oaks. There's nothing better than sitting around a campfire on a cool fall day or evening. There are two log cabins, one of which doubles as a place to cook maple syrup in the spring, a pavilion and an odor-free "outhouse". We will only rent to one group at a time, you'll just have to choose which cabin site(s) you want. The group limit is 9 people. Hike the trails meandering through our woods, sit around the large campfire, take a relaxing nap in the hammock, watch sunset down one of the trails, or the many activities of hiking and mountain/fat tire biking groomed trails at nearby Levis/Trow Mound, fishing, kayaking, horse trail rides, and The Highground Veterans Memorial Park is a mile up the road. The pavilion has a large log picnic table, Blackstone griddle, a charcoal grill, and refrigerator/freezer. The pavilion and Sugar Shack cabin have solar power. The Sugar Shack has a small gas stove and oven. The Cozy Cabin does not have solar power yet. All rentals include use of the pavilion and "outhouse". There is no WiFi but there is good cell phone service. Bedding is furnished for cabin stays. Wood is furnished. Charcoal is furnished. We welcome your furry friends, but no more than 2 dogs. We politely request no children under 7 in cabins, and then all children over 7 supervised at all times while in cabins. 2 night minimum; 3 night minimum on holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, and 4th of July if it lands on a Friday or Monday. UPDATE: The gravel road down to the cabins is completed and smooth. Neillsville is located just 2 hours from St. Paul, MN; 2 1/2 hours from Madison; 2 1/2 hours from Green Bay.

**THERE IS ACTIVE LOGGING BY THE CABIN, not on weekends, but there will be stumps and dirt around the cabin as we cut back the trees and make a lawn/parking lot.** If you are looking for the perfect Up North rustic weekend get away we have the perfect spot for you. Nestled back in the woods off the beaten path up in the small little town of Prentice WI is CCR Rustic Retreat. This quaint little off-grid cabin is found on the side of our family’s cattle ranch. It's the perfect "farmcation" spot. It's a studio style A frame connected to hundreds of acres of trails. The land provides access to the Price County snowmobile trail and the ATV route. You can hike, snow shoe, cross country ski, ride wheeler, snowmobile, UTV, or even horses to the 6 1/2 acre private lake that’s secluded further back on the property. Where you can take out the paddle boat or kayaks for a relaxing afternoon on the water. Wake up in the morning to enjoy your coffee on the front deck overlooking the field of cattle and/or horses. You can hike the woods and forage for lunch, we provide books for this adventure to make sure you are safe. You can go berry picking for a sweet snack. Kids can wade in the creek and build fairy gardens and houses. It truly is a magically place! Have a picnic on the dock, or in the picnic area by the historic 100+ year old beaver dam that holds the chain of lakes together. Wake up in the morning and collect eggs from our chickens and ducks for a protein packed breakfast. We can arrange for a whole ranch life experience. Help feed the animals, when it’s season, tend to and enjoy the fresh garden, if it’s calving or failing season you can even help witness the miracle of birth. Run around and give snacks to the goats. There are hundreds of acres at your disposal to explore and find adventure. While there is no indoor plumbing, the cabin is equipped with a generator, and an outhouse. There is a black stone, microwave, fire pit available for cooking and a Kurig for your morning cup of coffee. You can bring your horses up and park them in a small paddock out the front door. There is water available with hose access across the 40, up by the barn. In the warmer months there is a 300 gravity tank for water access on site. We also offer bear, coyote, bobcat, and grouse hunting packages. You can have the opportunity to see abundant wildlife including deer, bear, coyotes, bobcat, smaller woodland creatures, and a multitude of feathered friends. We offer “farm fresh food” packages including home grown beef, pork, and fresh duck and chicken eggs from our own farm. Dog-friendly camping near Abbotsford guide

Overview

Hugging the US border, Abbotsford is set in a wide swathe of farmland split by the Fraser River and the Trans-Canada Highway. The Fraser Valley urban centre is a base from which to embark east into the BC interior or west to the coast. Sumas Mountain Regional Park butts up against Abbotsford’s eastern edge with hiking and mountain biking trails (from easier Squidline to the hardcore Knob Gobbler) skirting its slopes. It’s also a happening spot for agritourism, from lavender fields and a meadery to apple orchards and a cidery.

When to go

The Fraser Valley is a year-round destination with mild-but-wet weather from November to February. Higher alpine regions may get snow (with the closest skiing to Abbotsford being across the border on the slopes of Mount Baker), but summer is peak season for camping, especially at lakes, and valley temperatures can be many degrees hotter than at the coast and mountains.

Know before you go

  • Most provincial parks take site reservations in advance (recommended throughout the high season of summer) and give an early priority booking window to BC residents.
  • The Trans-Canada Highway, which runs through Abbotsford and neighbouring municipalities, is the main thoroughfare to points east and west and can become very congested during rush hours on weekdays and holiday weekends.
  • Travelling across the border to the United States can also be very busy during weekends and holidays, requires a valid passport, and is subject to closures (you may need to return via a different crossing than anticipated).
