Where to go

Huntington Surrounds

Huntington and its immediate surroundings offer plenty to discover for nature lovers. The Paul Ambrose Trail for Health is a multi-use trail stretching more than 18 miles along the Ohio River, open to cyclists, runners, and walkers. It passes through various points of interest like scenic overlooks and historical sites. One stop is Ritter Park, a favorite spot for outdoor activities that boasts over 100 acres of green space. The Huntington Museum of Art features serene outdoor gardens and sculptures, and the Heritage Farm Museum and Village has a charming petting zoo and provides a glimpse into the region's past.

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve

Head east along I-64 and arrive in this outdoor lover's paradise in around two hours. Recently upgraded to national park status, it's known for its world-class rapids–whitewater rafting and kayaking are especially popular here. The hiking and biking trails are suitable for all skill levels. Alternatively, go rock climbing, take a scenic drive through the countryside, or learn about the region’s history at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine.

Beech Fork State Park

Less than 30 minutes from Huntington, Beech Fork State Park spans 3,000 acres filled with hiking and biking trails. The park's centerpiece is Beech Fork Lake, which offers fishing, boating, swimming, and sunbathing on the sandy beach. Exploring the park's 26 miles of trails through rolling hills and hardwood forests is a treat for hikers and mountain bikers.

When to go

The best time to visit Huntington is from late spring through early fall, with the most pleasant weather in the spring and fall months. Summers can be hot and humid, but the area's many lakes and parks provide relief from the heat. The fall foliage in the area is particularly vibrant in October and November. Winters can be cold, but snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular at nearby state parks.
