Lakeside Campsite Suburbs

20 acres resting on a large lake with fishing available (bass, bluegill, catfish).  There is a creek 2 miles away with a rope swing.  The campsite itself is in an open flat area, though there are some woods nearby.Learn more about this land:The campground is located on our 20 acre property next to a lake that belongs to us.  There is fishing available in the lake (blue gill, bass, sunfish).  This is in a residential farm-type area, our neighbors on all ends own horses.  The area is like a field.  There is no wooded-area on the property and neighbors may be able to see your tent from far away.

Firewood is included at no additional cost. 

Bears Den Campground

Set up your tent in our remote but easily accessible campground, 100 yards off the Appalachian Trail. Roast marshmallows by the fire pit and watch the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley. 
Individual site capacities are varied! Please take note of this when selecting your site upon checkout.

About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville. 
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain. 
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm. 
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay. 
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay. 
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. 
For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.  
Pets are allowed! Please keep them on leash during your stay.  
Trash can be disposed of in the bins onsite. 
Additional details to note
Expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay. No kitchen equipment is provided, so campers must bring their own supplies if they'd like to cook. We do not offer WiFi, but there is good cell reception for all common carriers.

I'm a new fisherman and there are some small fish in it.  just down the road is the Potomac River.  That is a good spot to also fish from the banks   "The fish i have caught in the run creek are darters, bluegill, pumpkinseed, green sunfish,...   There are plenty of bass that have not seen lures-  Good luck with the fishing

Unfortunately, we are unable to host overnights at this time due to regulations. We are sad to not be able to have you here but could recommend Sky Meadows or Shenandoah State Parks nearby. 

You are welcome to visit the cidery to order drinks and bottles-to-go during our open hours (Sat.11-5; Sun 12-5; weekdays by appt.) or request after-hours pick-up. 

We hope to be available by Fall or Spring and offer you a $15 credit to use on your next visit. We recommend advance reservations especially for Columbus Day & Memorial Day.

HipCamp uses a number system but we do not. You may choose your own spot, from our vast property, depending on your needs. Everyone should be spread out, giving privacy to each site. Many, many areas to camp all the way up into the mountain foothill. Welcome to arrive after 8:00 a.m. to begin setting up. Prior to arrival, reply back to our check-in email letter we will send you requesting a copy of photo IDs per adult, names & description of children and pets, emergency contacts per person and a Release of Liability statement, all due via email PRIOR to your arrival. 

Tents, trailers and RVs are welcome. Bring portable potties for comfort. No smoking allowed on property. No charge for children and pets camping.

Do not bring wood to the property (may transfer insects). Plenty of fallen wood to forage for your campfires. Fires out @ midnight. If planning to build a campfire, pack a shovel for assistance in managing the fire and water buckets for emergency. We have hoses for filling (unless you are camping near the creek you won’t need). 

Cider Bar open 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays / 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sundays and weekdays by appointment. Order our seasonal ciders for the campsite. Available by the pint, 64 oz. growler, 4-pack & 24 bottle case for take-home selections.

The Dragon Inn Clearings

This privately owned large home is tucked away on 7+ acres wooded area in scenic semi-secluded neighborhood in La Plata, Charles County. Charles County was created in 1658 by an Order in Council. There was also an earlier Charles County from 1650 to 1653, sometimes referred to in historic documents as Old Charles County.
In April 1865, John Wilkes Booth made his escape through Charles County after shooting President Abraham Lincoln. He was on his way to Virginia. John Wilkes Booth fled to southern Maryland, toward Zekiah Swamp. Booth entered the swamp after treatment by Dr. Samuel Mudd for the broken leg he suffered escaping Fords Theater. A black tobacco farmer guided Booth and his co-conspirator David Herold through the swamp to the home of a Confederate sympathizer, Samuel Cox. Cox led Booth and Herold to Thomas A. Jones who helped them the rest of the way through the Zekiah Swamp and across the Potomac River to Virginia.
In 1926, a tornado ripped through the county leaving 17 dead (including 13 schoolchildren) and on April 28, 2002, another tornado destroyed much of downtown La Plata. In its path of destruction was our location now known as THE DRAGON INN,  the house was completely torn down to its foundation and rebuild in 2003. You can see a marker stone in the brick wall near the garage. 
This county also has several properties on the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are Green Park and Pleasant Hill, home of the Green and Spalding Families.
The Dragon Inn and its all natural wooded backyard, also known as Zekiah Swamp, is part of the Potomac River basin in Charles County, Maryland. The swamp is 21 miles (34 km) of braided stream stretching the length of Charles County and is a tributary of the Potomac River. It sits at an elevation of three feet 90.91 m) and 450 acres (180 ha) of its southern end is protected as the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area. 
Although the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area is primarily owned by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, it isn't managed for recreation. As a result, there are no paved public access roads, parking areas, or scenic overlooks. Nor are there marked or developed trails, picnic areas, campsites, or visitor's centers. Nonetheless, a limited level of recreational use is still possible.
In connection with its Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail system, the U.S. National Park Service notes that access is possible by way of the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and SR 234 (Budds Creek Road). Traveling east from that point on SR 234, one comes to Penn's Hill Road/Allen’s Fresh Road. Following Allen's Fresh Road south at mile 23.2, there is a dirt road on the west side that leads through the swamp and woods to Allen's Fresh Run of the Wicomico River. This is suitable for driving or walking. Other sight-seeing or photo opportunities are possible with brief stops along the shoulder of SR 234 where it passes through the Natural Environment Area. Similar possibilities exist to the north on SR 6 (Charles Street) that runs between La Plata and Charlotte Hall.
If you are feeling adventurous you can explore some paths, clearings and bamboo fields leading to a small creek flowing into the Zekiah Swamp Run directly from our backyard!
