There are no lights, no neighbors in sight, and they had the freedom to choose their campsite or observation point, whether it was on the flat, nestled in the trees, or on top of Carney Mountain. RV’s also easily found a spot to camp. New friends were made as everyone observed the eclipse. It was totally awe inspiring in so many ways!! The open areas and the top of Carney Mountain, which is a short hike with panoramic views of the area, were perfect spots to experience the solar eclipse, Northern Lights, sunrises and sunsets. The 115 acres of Ubuntu offer many opportunities for camping, hiking and enjoying the abundant wildlife. There is a wet area that sometimes becomes several ponds if the beavers have been at work. There is a path leading to the ponds and also one that runs through the woods to the right of the ponds. The location is private and quiet but still very accessible (only 10 minutes from Exit 34 off the Northway) to all the Adirondacks has to offer, such as biking, jogging, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and hiking. Ubuntu is located only 45 minutes from Lake Placid and the high peaks areas, Saranac Lake is about one hour away, Lake Champlain is 20 minutes away, and Montreal is one hour away. The ferry to Vermont if you wish to cross over the pond (Lake Champlain) is about 45 minutes away. And Exit 34 off the Northway is only 10 minutes from Ubuntu. And if you love equestrian sports, the Willow Hill Equestrian Center is less than 1.5 miles away. Bring your horse and stable your buddy at the Willow Hill Farm, or sign up for a lesson with one of their accomplished instructors. This 150-acre property has been in our family for 32 years and now houses three generations. Built in 1900 it was a traditional dairy farm until the 50's and 60's when potatoes were planted on the fields for the Boston and New York markets. By the 70's and 80's it became a gentleman's farm for a retired couple from New York City and the dairy farmers nearby hayed the fields. When we purchased the property in 1993 we continued offering the hay, built greenhouses, planted vegetable and flower gardens, ran a traditional Bed and Breakfast, now airbnb. The farm remains certified organic and is still being hayed by a local dairy farm, the gardens are community managed using regenerative and sustainable practices when ever possible. Willow Hill Farm is a family-run working horse farm. We train , teach, board horses, and run a day camp. We had a resident camp for 40 years. We have mountains in our backyard and the Au Sable River with world class fishing bordering our meadow for a half mile. Great swimming there, also! We are 45 minutes from Lake Placid and 30 minutes from Plattsburgh. Montreal and Burlington, VT are a 1.5 hour drive. Lake Champlain is 15 minutes away. Hiking, boating, and swimming are all close, and riding lessons are available on the farm. Most hip camp sites are near where resident campers stayed. There are two sleeping cabins with many bunks. Each has two small rooms where a counselor slept and one large room. There are screened windows with shutters on all sides and screen doors without locks on each end. There are electrical outlets and over head lights in the cabins. We have plans to improve the cabins. Past the cabins is the Green with 4 loose stone firepits. Across from the cabins is the shower house with four hot showers, sink, and toilets. Showers and toilets have closed stalls. Currently, the water system is above ground and will not work in freezing temps. We have installed an outhouse for year round use. All water is from our excellent well. On each side of the former(closed) dining are spots. There are electrical outlets on the outside of the dining hall. People with campers may like to park in the riding arena near the barnyard. There are outlets, but no toilets. Good water is available from the barns. Lovely views of sky and mountains! We also have a beautiful 50 acre field with a household type outlet, but no well. There is an outhouse there. Excellent sky viewing here. This is where we jump and train our horses. Horses may be turned out in this field.

Willow Hill Farm is a family-run working horse farm. We train , teach, board horses, and run a day camp. We had a resident camp for 40 years. We have mountains in our backyard and the Au Sable River with world class fishing bordering our meadow for a half mile. Great swimming there, also! We are 45 minutes from Lake Placid and 30 minutes from Plattsburgh. Montreal and Burlington, VT are a 1.5 hour drive. Lake Champlain is 15 minutes away. Hiking, boating, and swimming are all close, and riding lessons are available on the farm. Most hip camp sites are near where resident campers stayed. There are two sleeping cabins with many bunks. Each has two small rooms where a counselor slept and one large room. There are screened windows with shutters on all sides and screen doors without locks on each end. There are electrical outlets and over head lights in the cabins. We have plans to improve the cabins. Past the cabins is the Green with 4 loose stone firepits. Across from the cabins is the shower house with four hot showers, sink, and toilets. Showers and toilets have closed stalls. Currently, the water system is above ground and will not work in freezing temps. We have installed an outhouse for year round use. All water is from our excellent well. On each side of the former(closed) dining are spots. There are electrical outlets on the outside of the dining hall. People with campers may like to park in the riding arena near the barnyard. There are outlets, but no toilets. Good water is available from the barns. Lovely views of sky and mountains! We also have a beautiful 50 acre field with a household type outlet, but no well. There is an outhouse there. Excellent sky viewing here. This is where we jump and train our horses. Horses may be turned out in this field.

Kathleen and John’s cabin is a treasure. It’s exactly as cozy and beautiful as the pictures suggest, and well stocked with the essentials for a comfortable stay. I spent 4 days in December there during consistent snow fall and high winds and never suffered for it. There was ample wood for the stove and fresh water. It was an ideal setting for my trip. And beyond all that, the hosts were extremely thoughtful and caring, even going so far to help me unstuck my car from the unforgiving vermont snowscape. I can’t recommend it enough. 10/10

The view is beautiful! We were lucky to have arrived after a few inches of snow had fallen and it stayed on the trees the whole time we were there-it was absolutely gorgeous! We saw deer cross the road, heard owls and coyotes. Trails at the end of the road. As it states the cabin is small but Kathleen made excellent use of the space and 2 adults in there was just fine. Very cozy, more than enough wood to keep the woodstove going and have campfires. Everything you need is already provided. Was cloudy when we were there but on a clear night it would be a fantastic place to stargaze. Kathleen was a wonderful hostess. Very accommodating, very responsive and just a sweetheart all around.

Site #6 was on the other side of the field from where we stayed at site seven, but was just as charming!

We loved staying at Kathleen’s place! The cabin is very private, feels completely safe, and the view is fantastic. Everything was very clean and nicely organized, and the minute you arrive you have everything you need. Even though the weather was cold, we stayed cozy and warm thanks to the wood stove, which was surprisingly efficient. The kindling and firewood were fully stocked as well, making the stay easy and comfortable. A wonderful experience overall! Thank you:)

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sara & Matt’s cabin! It’s tucked away in the woods and feels private, but it’s still close to downtown Saranac Lake (4 min drive). Make sure you follow the directions provided, Google Maps wanted to bring us the wrong way (do not turn left down Ledge Lane). There are little HipCamp logo signs that help guide the way at the end of the Saranac Lane when it turns to dirt. The cabin was very clean and inviting. It was cold the first night as the cabin is not insulted or have heat, but between the blankets they provide and the blankets we brought we were comfy. Really appreciated having drinking water provided! We will definitely be booking a return trip to this cabin in the future!

Lots of privacy despite being less than 5 minutes from down town Saranac Lake! The cabin is a great middle ground camping experience- no plumbing or electric but you still get the creature comforts of a bed. The blankets provided kept us warm despite low temps in the 40s. Only downside is the solar shower does not heat up when there’s no sun, but we made it work.

Tip-top spot with breathtaking views in a great location, 45 minutes from Burlington and 45m-1.5h from the interior (Waterbury, Killington, Woodstock, Montpelier, Stowe), right in the heart of the Green Mountains. Melinda and Dave were very responsive to our messages and just great hosts. They maintain a beautiful, flat site with a lot of privacy, a stocked and cleaned outhouse, and complementary firewood. What’s not to love? This was our first trip with our rig up to Vermont and it’s definitely gonna be part of a regular rotation. Tristan and Barbara were so kind and welcoming the moment we arrived. They offered beer, gathered a ton of firewood for us and were so willing to help. The next morning, Tristan helped us out with our bike route and gave some good advice on the region in general—even offered Brussels sprouts from their garden. The land itself is absolutely gorgeous and the view in the morning was incredible. I only wish we had a little more time to buzz around and see all of their projects. Hope to stay there again!

Spent one night at Ubuntu while exploring the Adirondacks with my doggo. Loved the privacy of the site, views of hillsides with fall colors, stargazing and walking paths! Aisha was kind and attentive when she greeted us and the wood bundle was a generous size and dry. There were other campers, but the smaller site in the woods was completely private. Would go back!
