It all started on a first date in Boston....Nick had to excuse himself to take a phone call. His cow had fled its pasture. Much to Tara's surprise in that moment, this man she had just met was finishing his engineering degree at Northeastern, but was simultaneously building a homestead in Vermont.

This off-the-grid homestead sits on a quiet dirt road just outside the quaint village of Chester. Spread across 28 acres, the property features streams and trails to explore.
The 8' x 14' Studio, complete with an accessible entry ramp, offers an elevated porch overlooking the garden. New this year are Adirondack chairs, a covered outdoor kitchen with table, grill and two-burner camp stove as well as a fire pit. Guests also have access to an accessible bathroom with a clawfoot tub located in the main house, about 250 feet from the Studio. An outdoor shower attached to the main house is also available. A wood-fired barrel sauna can be reserved for an additional charge.
Frank, Julie, and their very chill black Lab, Skye (who roams off-leash), welcome all visitors, from local to international, LGBTQ+, and those of all abilities.
Chester itself offers a small grocery store, convenience store, a great coffee/sandwich shop, wine store, and several restaurants. Hiking trails are available both on the property and in the village, while Okemo Mountain, Mount Ascutney, and Lowell Lake State Park are just 20 minutes away. Manchester and Killington are approximately 45 minutes from the property.

Spring is lambing time on the farm. Lambs will be hopping, bees will be buzzing and the garden will be getting planted. Apple blossoms will soon be out. It's lovely!
Our farm was named after the summer home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trollhaugen Farm means Troll hill, but the only real trolls around these parts are the sheep. Our farm has sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks that you are welcome to visit.
The yurt sits in the woods next to a babbling brook. A suspension bridge connects you to the farm area. The yurt is private and has a fire pit right out back where you can grill or just sit and enjoy the fire.
The colorful yurt offers a comfy four poster bed, a small kitchen area and a bathroom with shower and composting toilet.
This is a great place for children, bikers, swimmers, hikers or anyone who just wants to get away from it all for a few days. There are many lovely hikes, one of which takes you to a pond you can swim in. You can also hike up in the woods behind the yurt.
Newfane village is one of the most picturesque villages in Vermont, with a courthouse on the green. There are two restaurants in Newfane, two coffee shops, a flea market on Sundays, and a great antique store. We are close to Brattleboro, home to one of the best coops in the northeast, as well as many fun stores and an art museum.

A former farm now a 150 acre forested retreat. Mt Ascutney, a 3500' monadnock is to the north and view in excess of 60 miles to the south.
We are dog friendly but request ALL dogs be on leash when near our house. We have chickens that are some times loose. If your dog should kill or injure one of the chickens plan on a discussion of the value of a pullet.

Firewood for the outside fire pit is available under extras.
However if it has rained or raining you may want to bring kindling wood.
We now have slab wood for sale if you do not want to rummage for wood in the forest

Dancing Bear Farm is a working farm with silvopastured chickens, turkeys, goats, and horses. Campsites are at the edge of the hayfields overlooking a view of Mt. Ascutney and Mt. Sunapee and excellent sunrises!
During your stay you are welcome to visit the animals, explore the forested trails, and walk up to the pond. The property is secluded and peaceful, though sometimes on Friday nights we can hear the race cars at the Claremont Motorsports Park.

6 Sites are on Sunrise Farms 75 acre Conservation land with 50 mile view for Sites 1 and 2. Very quiet area with lots of wildlife and ponds and disc golf. Very quiet with great swimming and lots of hikes right from your sites.
2 of the Brookside Sites (Wishbone Left and Right) are close by (2.7 miles) where we have another 1/2 mile of river frontage and can handle bigger groups as Conservation land on Sunrise Farm only allows 4 campers per site.
Sunrise Farm Sites 1 and 2 have oodles of space and Spectacular 50 mile views of Mount Monadnock with no house lights out there in the evening except the party string lights we provide.
Site 1 (with entrance 70 yards south of the farmhouse) is best for camping in with up to 20 foot trailers or multiple tents …on the large flat spaces in the 25 acre field to choose from.
Great Well water available near farmhouse. Biodegradable soaps Only if used in the ponds. Double Olympic sized Swim Pond we stock with Rainbow Trout to keep clear.
We have been advised Not to allow imported firewood (can import Wood Beetle dangerous for our forest).
- PLEASE use the Firewood bundle tubs we provide ($12.50) - pick up at the farmhouse or pull wood from the woods (and make it safer for use).
Beautiful and plenty of wildlife nearby... as well as Outhouses are marked on Map we provide with solar lights marking them at night. Do Not Leave food out when camping or away from site. Bears are rarely seen but it is wild country. Sites have locking garbage lids.
Unique and lovely as well as being next to trails and roads to miles of remote spots with very few if any ... people.
In Winter we request only AWD vehicles go down to this site or park up by farmhouse and hike in so you can easily get out. When wet park up by the road if you have 2 wheel drive.
Always WISE to arrive When LIGHT out as we do not live at the site and are not able to show guests to their sites as a result.

The cabins are rustic, but clean and airy. Tucked at the end of a quiet dirt road on 7 acres overlooking the Green Mountains, The Hip Shack is a cozy, private little cabin made for slowing down.
Inside you'll find a full-size bed, wood stove, table and chairs, keyless entry, and a hammock. Outside, enjoy your own fire pit/grill, plus access to our pond, gardens, hammock areas, communal fire pit, outdoor kitchen, shower and composting toilet.
The outdoor kitchen is stocked with cookware, utensils, an outdoor sink and a Blackstone griddle, so you can easily make a meal without packing your entire kitchen.
We're a 15-minute drive to Okemo and Ludlow, about 10 minutes from the Appalachian Trail, and close to Star Lake, hiking, swimming, skiing and the charming village of Belmont. Killington/Pico and Salt Ash Mountain can be seen from the property.
A Little Farm, Too
You're welcome to wander our gardens, visit the chickens, explore the greenhouse and enjoy the pond. Depending on the season, our Saturday farm stand offers fresh eggs, jams, jellies, pesto and other homemade goodies.
Just 2 miles down the road is the Belmont General Store, a local favorite and home to a seriously good chai latte.
Good to Know
The Hip Shack is a short walk from the parking area. We have wagons available to help with your gear, and kid-sized helpers may occasionally be available too!
The outdoor shower uses our potable well water and can be filled with hot water from the faucet by the garage. The composting toilet and outdoor kitchen are shared amenities.

Weekend Trip to Forest Echo Cabins
Mount Holly Pilgrimage.
Jeep in the woods. An old cabin. Water from the land.
Food made with my own hands. Fresh fish. Dessert. Bare feet on the earth and mountains outside the window.
Nothing complicated.
Just living close enough to the land to remember something we make very easy to forget: food comes from somewhere, water comes from somewhere, and we come from somewhere too.
No noise to follow. No crowd to answer to.
My companion was the voice of righteousness.
For a few days, I wasn't just passing through the land.
I was walking barefoot on it, eating from it, drinking from it, and living with it.
I was a pilgrim when I arrived. I'm still a pilgrim now. And the pilgrimage continues.

Everything went well, Stephanie was there to help whenever needed, accommodations were everything you need & nothing you don't. It's "glamping" so you need your warm sleeping gear and bring stove, pots & cooking supplies. Views were great, cabin was great for two, need to find room for cots with four folks, but do-able. Great experience overall.

We had such a wonderful stay at this cabin! It was the perfect little getaway for our family and made our Vermont birthday camping trip extra special. The cabin was cozy, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay.
We loved the peaceful setting and getting to enjoy the beautiful Vermont surroundings while still having a comfortable place to come back to. It was clear that a lot of thought went into making the space welcoming and enjoyable.

Had a beautiful time at the Dead-themed Grateful Acres.
Stephanie is a stellar host. Warm and helpful and great with communication.
The cabin (Sunshine) is cute and the simple thoughtful touches and amenities were appreciated.
The sky was so clear, I could see the milky way. In all my living days in Vermont, I have never seen such a beautiful star-filled sky.
There was something beautiful about the way the camp is sited on a high meadow, and the way the light of the setting sun spread across the wildflowers and fields.
I was here on Labor Day weekend and while the day was warm, the night was clear and crisp, so make sure you have warmth for possible cold nights.
Enjoy your time, and make sure to enjoy a dip at nearby Somerset Reservoir.

What a fantastic site! It's a perfect setting for a large group to relax in comfort and in nature. There were 20+ of us for a long weekend and we LOVED the accommodations, the location, the beautiful surroundings. From a great pizza night using the wood-burning oven to a local swim and hike, there was absolutely everything we could have asked for. And Mary is a fantastic host -- friendly, helpful, knowledgeable about the area. She made sure we had everything we needed and more! I would definitely come back, and highly recommend it!

Once again, we've had a great stay at Grateful Acres! Both nights of our stay this time saw the campground fully booked but the hosts ensure a quiet, respectful stay. As always the camp store had all we needed; fire wood was plentiful; the cabin, grounds, and outhouses/portapotty were all exceptionally clean and well maintained. Our island getaway was absolutely perfect! We loved lounging on the dock and brought floaties to enjoy the water. Other highlights included evening stargazing, a stunning misty morning sunrise, and playing backgammon on the porch during an afternoon rain shower. The cabin was so cozy and has everything you could need. The thoughtful hosts made sure we knew exactly what to expect and what to bring to make the most of our time there. We are already planning a return trip!

Things to note: it’s very private, cutest little spot in the forest, you can hear the cars at the local racetrack on Friday and Saturday evenings (I’m a heavy sleeper so no big deal for me), the bed is super cozy, camp fire spot of your dreams, bring enough water to put out said camp fire (there is some provided), and I’d caution anyone with a sedan to avoid driving up the hill/entrance to the site, you can park at the bottom if needed? I think? Thankfully I had access to a truck so we made it up just fine.

The Daydream cabin was the cutest weekend spot for my dog and I! Our host was so welcoming, the land was beautiful, and all facilities were clean and easy to use. I definitely plan to stay here again!
