We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. Great spot in the desert! Site was great for looking at stars! I have never seen them so pronounced before! Really appreciated the amenities (showers and toilets). After being in BBNP days and using their facilities, it was nice to get a flushing toilet. Campsite 6 sits a little higher than the others (from what I can see) and offers a nice view of the surrounding area along with the adjacent little canyon. I will definitely booked this place again!

Absolutely amazing!!! I came here on my car camping trip to the Big Bend National Park and was extremely impressed by this campground. First of all, the bath house was so much better than I expected. The showers had hot water, and everything was clean/well maintained. I was at campsite 1 which was decently close to the bathhouse and fire wood. This campground is about 25 minutes away from Big Bend, but the views on the drive made it so worth it!!

Everything was exactly as advertised. Karen was friendly and welcoming and shared lots of great local recommendations! The property is very close to Terlingua, yet far enough from the highway that it felt peaceful and quiet. We stayed four nights at Site 2 and had no neighbors, which made it feel very private. The tent site is about a 2–3 minute walk from the parking area, which was the only minor downside for us since we like to bring our large cooler and water jug when spending full days outside, so hauling it back and forth everyday took some effort. Otherwise, the site was conveniently close to both the bathroom and parking. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and the hot shower was a big plus! Funny story: Karen did warn us to keep things and food secured from animals (including her dog Mojo), and we accidentally left our paper towels and leftover tacos outside while showering one night (totally our fault). He found them, but he’s the sweetest dog and we couldn’t help but laugh it off. We happened to be there during a full moon, so we missed out on the darkest skies, but overall this was a great basecamp for exploring both the national and state parks!

This is the coolest campground in America! As someone who has camped quite a lot. Mike was such a great host and the environment was relaxed and had everything you’d need for a base camp to explore the area.

I booked the #2 site as a spill over site next to site 1. We used it for parking guests. The two sites are reasonably close together and relatively private from the rest of the campground. Loved our stay in site 1 and will return for sure.

What a well thought out space to stay! The natural beauty of the desert was enhanced by thoughtful landscaping and buildings. This is a ‘normal’ camping arrangement with sites close but separated by landscaping. We had sites 1 and 2. They, along with site 3, are a level down from the main loop and feel relatively private. Tho…a public road does run right past them with occasional traffic. I will 💯 stay in site 1 again. The ground is harder than any I have previously set up on. The provided bucket of tools was absolutely amazing and much needed. The heavy mallet and tall pry bar were much much more effective than my whimpy hammer at getting stakes in the ground. We used the wood stump stools around the firepit and bought wood from the giant available pile for a great evening. Bathrooms were clean. The outdoor shower was great on the 80 degree day and the indoor showers with hot water perfect for the 40 degree days. Free Wifi worked great. All around a great space. We will return
