Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. 4 nights at Temple of the Bird

Probably my favorite Hipcamp ever over my ~6 years of use. Terlingua is amazing, but wouldn’t have near as much charm without Temple Of The Bird and Mike to own/operate. Locals gravitate there because it’s such a cool hangout and it had the best views in town. I’ll always stop in to say “Hey” if I’m remotely close and stay there for any future visits to the area.

Mike’s hostel and campground is amazing! The communal space has all the amenities like a kitchen, seating area, flush toilets and shower, bonfire. The campsites are well marked. Mike is a wonderful and welcoming host! We enjoyed our time here.

we really enjoyed our two days stayed at Mike's place (temple of the bird). we reached right at the thanksgiving eve and the place was buzzing. food, music, campfire...it was such a cool experience at the heart of terlingua ghost town. If you like mingling with a crowd and make new friends, you are going to enjoy this place. Mike is an awesome host and helped with everything that we asked for. he replied to all my messages promptly and the decked out kitchen was a real plus. We rented the sleeping bunks which were affordable and cozy. terlingua itself is pretty cool with the dark sky and you can see all the stars. one thing to note, it is not exactly close to big bend, and having a car with high clearance, like a 4x4, really helps to move around. i hope i can go back just to stay for a few days and chill. thanks Mike and keep flippin'

Mike’s place was very conveniently located, had a great community atmosphere and hangout area, beautiful view, clean bathrooms showers and kitchen, and Mike was very friendly and accommodating during my stay. I’d highly recommend a stay here, and I will certainly be back next time I am in Terlingua.

Everything about the campsite was perfect! The effort that was put into the property really shows and is definitely appreciated. The community restrooms were clean and stocked, the showers were like a spa steam room. Everything was extremely comfortable

What a cool spot! Dirt road in was a lot of fun. Brought a 20ft camper to spot 10. No problems at all. Friendly folks. Would recommend. Will come back!

I stayed in the bunkhouse for one night. After several days of hiking and bikepacking I just wanted one night in a real bed before my long drive home, but I stumbled on a place that I'll be visiting every time I stay in Terlingua. This is a very cool place, and I met some cool people.
