We had a great time. Took the family and three dogs. Has a dedicated fenced dog run. Very private location right on the Bayou. Has a great private dock with good fishing. Caught redfish, blue crabs, spotted sea trout, black drum, catfish, bluegill, ladyfish and alligator gar all in one spot. The hookups were in the perfect location and did not require a long 50amp cord or septic hoses. Surfside beach is only 18 minutes away for your beach fix and good food. 10/10 would recommend to anyone. Great host and great spot.

We had a great time camping here. It was right by the beach which was perfect. We did a lot of fishing so it was nice to have the ocean right there. You really can't beat the value. We would definitely come here again.

We had the best time fishing, swimming, and relaxing at Camp Nadur. We are already planning our next visit. Even on a very busy holiday weekend it was SO peaceful. Shockingly we had the beach to ourself most of the time. It’s a fantastic spot! Thanks Kirk and Emily for sharing your place.

Great getaway spot to enjoy the beach and watch the boats come in. I didn't have a good experience on my own equipment part and didn't get to stay the full stint that I wanted to. But the kind people Emily and her husband Kirk they refunded me for the days I didn't even stay. I highly recommend them!

This is a really nice private, quiet neighborhood and place to stay. We enjoyed 3 nights here. Our kids had lots of fun finding neat shells ,flying their kite, and going for walks! It’s a very friendly place to relax with the sounds of the ocean only a short distance away! Thank you!

I had 2 back-to-back reservations so fortunately I get to leave 2 reviews 😀. When I visited camp it was indeed an unusually high tide caused by a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico pushing a lot more water up than usual but Camp was still high and dry. A few days later a North Wind pushed in and sent the water back where it belongs allowing me to walk with boots on over to the gulf Shoreline to get some fishing in right in front of the camp. Bring any food with you that you will need because there's not much available in town except for a dollar general which is surprisingly well stocked with food and produce. If you like you can search YouTube for Dollar "General walkthrough Sargeant Texas" to see everything they have to offer locally. Fresh produce arrives Tuesdays and Saturdays so get there early if you need it because the whole town shows up. I also highly recommend joining the savings sargeant FB page before your trip which can provide excellent local information. Excellent place to camp and don't forget the mosquito spray :-)

Camp Nudar was perfect for me this past week. I took my Bed-over-cab truck bed camper down there pulling my Waverunner to do some fishing. The hosts were VERY easy to contact through the HipcampCamp app, very pleasant and professional and accommodating. Cant beat the price on this down there either for an Oceanfront campsight. 30 and 50 amp service is setup on the East side of the site so bring your longer extension cord for more flexibility on how deep into the site you can back in. I only had a 30' and parked exactly where I wanted to bt I have a fairly compact rig. Site is reasonably level on crushed stone that was very stable for me in my 14,000 lb dually with the camper loaded even after a massive rainstorm. I had small boards under my camper legs that did not dig in one bit after almost an entire week so it was perfect for my 1200 lbs per camper leg free standing on it. The driveway is a good length if you happen to have a spare vehicle that needs to parked in front of your camper...and then some. Perfect water pressure on the hose bib according to my pressure meter and breaker never tripped. Bring some rubber boots or reef boots and you can easily walk from the camp the 75' or so to the big granite blocks that line the Gulf shore. Bring a surf rod to get past the first few Breakers to the deeper water for fishing. Less than 5 minutes from Joey's boat launch ($5 to launch). Great site and a perfect place for a weeks getaway! Where to go
Matagorda Bay
Fifty-eight miles of beaches stretch along the Matagorda peninsula, and campers can enjoy primitive camping along much of the seashore. Around 22 miles are accessible by vehicle, but you’ll need a boat to explore further afield. Fishing, kayaking, and surfing are the main activities along the beaches and tidal marshes, while bird-watchers will want to add the Mad Island Marsh Preserve and Matagorda Bay Nature Park to their itinerary.
Galveston Bay
East of Matagorda, coastal wetlands stretch along the coast to Galveston Bay. Nature walks and bird-watching opportunities abound in the San Bernard and Brazoria National Wildlife Refuges, while primitive camping is possible within the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area. Campers will find numerous options along Galveston Island, but for the best views, park your RV or pitch a tent by the beachside in the Galveston Island State Park.
South Houston
Urban campers have options around Houston, and camping to the south and West of the city is the best way to avoid the crowds. Riverside campgrounds dot the banks of the Brazos River, where you can camp on a working cattle ranch or choose from RV sites, group camps, and cabins in Stephen F. Austin State Park. There’s also RV camping with electric hookups as well as primitive camping in Brazos Bend State Park.
When to go
When the summer heat kicks in, the Gulf Coast is the best place to cool off from the Texan sun. Summers stretch from May through September, and this is peak season, so reserve campgrounds well in advance. The Gulf waters are often warm enough for swimming and water sports in spring and fall, while winter temperatures are still mild enough for camping along the coast. Birding opportunities are best during the spring and fall migrations.
Know before you go
- You’ll need your own transportation to get to and around Matagorda—better yet, bring your boat. A 4x4 is recommended for beach driving, and a 15mph speed limit is in place along Matagorda beach.
- There are shops in town where you can pick up groceries, camping supplies, and fishing bait and tackle. Bring everything you need with you if camping along the beach.
- Tent and RV camping is permitted on the beaches in Matagorda. An annual beach vehicle permit is required for driving on Matagorda Beach, but there are no additional camping fees.
