The rich history of Burnhead Grazings is enveloped in a love for God's creation. Dr. Gib and Emmy Lou McLaughlin purchased Burnhead, which is Gaelic for the head of the stream, from William H. Stevens. The once pasture for Hilltop Dairy's cows became a pasture for sheep. Gib and Emmy had been in search of land for years after getting their first border collie and falling in love with the Shepherd lifestyle. Gib trained dozens of border collies to work the sheep and did hundreds of demonstrations highlighting the herding abilities of the collie across the country. Their love for Scotland and the border collie took them Scotland on many occasions. Burnhead Grazings is a snapshot of Scotland, "in bye" or close to, the beautiful college town of Indiana, PA. Less than two miles from two hotels, three miles from downtown, and within minutes from Amish country, it is amazing that this respite still exists so close to civilization. Gib and Emmy's daughter, Moire McLaughlin Bridges and her husband Randy have endeavored to bring the sheep back to Burnhead Grazings and to continue the family tradition as well as to share in the experience. You can listen to an interview on The Christian Witness Program on this page for some history about Moire and Randy in Tennessee where they were residing before coming to Indiana. They are producing lamb, wool for spinning and felting, and hay and are opening up the farm for small events such as weddings or family reunions. Moire is also the author and illustrator of a children's book available for sale on iBooks called Sissy & The King. In November of 2014, with the help of Hilltop Baptist Church and many others, they began hosting an event, LIFE Nativity, the weekend before Thanksgiving, which benefits Life-Way Pregnancy Center. Learn more about this land: Our property is located near the tiny village of Glen Hazel, our unique area offers close proximity to many watersports and hiking opportunities. Visitors can watch bald eagles and osprey as you enjoy kayaking, fishing and nature at this primitive campsite. We have just one site. Our campsite is very private and includes a fire ring, a picnic table a trash can and a swing. Parking is available right at the site. It's just a 2 minute walk to the northernmost kayak launch on the East Branch of the Clarion River. Here you will find a public porta potty for use during the summer only. Several small jack dams will make your kayak experience a delight. We have a private 1 acre pond just a stones throw from the campsite that visitors can enjoy. Fishing is permitted in the pond, no license needed. Fly fishermen will enjoy the thrill of catching native and stocked trout in the most beautiful section on the East Branch of the Clarion River (PA fishing license and trout stamp required). Nearby is Bendigo State Park that offers free use of picnic areas and swimming in an immaculately kept pool. Just 1 1/2 miles away is the Dam Inn where you can stop for a beer or for a nice dinner on the deck. Adjacent to the campsite is State Gamelands #25. This enormous tract of public land is open to all for hiking, biking and fishing the pristine native trout streams, including Middle Fork, Crooked Creek and several others. Only a 3 mile drive will land you at the East Branch Lake, a seven mile long lake where you can put your boat in and fish, kayak or water ski to your hearts content.

It's 10 miles to downtown Kittanning, where festivals and concerts in the park are held, plus more restaurants, stores, and rails to trails for bike riders. There are fishing ponds and large glacial rock formations nearby. Tours to the places mentioned can be scheduled for a fee if we're available. We will have a small map of the area with places marked. You're welcome to cut and use fallen trees. Please don't bring firewood from other counties due to spread of diseases and destructive insects. This was a wonderful property there was so much to do within a short distance wish we could have stayed a whole week. Hosts were very hospitable delivering firewood and giving us a shuttle so we could pick up our kayaks after a day of paddling they're also very knowledgeable of the area and we're able to point out a few things that we took advantage of being able to do that we would not have found if it wasn't for them

The host was outstanding, the spot was super cute and easy to camp at and it was a great experience. The spot is right off the road, across the street from a stream and down the street from a dam where you can easily go hang out and/or fish without a lot of other people around. There's a picnic table, swing, trash can and fire pit, as shown in the pics. The pond is right next to the campsite, yet somehow I did not get bothered by a single mosquito even though they eat me alive in my own backyard that does not have any kind of water nearby. It was really convenient and just a super easy place to camp. My only warning to other campers is not to park too far in beyond the fire pit- my dumb arse got a Jeep Gladiator stuck in the mud. Susan and her husband had to come tow me out, which they did with ease and they were really nice about it, even though I interrupted their entire Sunday. I can't recommend them enough. Thank you.

Weekend Trip to Burnhead Grazings

We had a great experience at Burnhead Grazings. The two campsites were scenic and spacious. The stream site felt very private and close to farm and accessing the facilities. Moire was a gracious host and cooked us a delicious breakfast. Emmy gave an enthusiastic and informational tour of the farm and we were excited about seeing the various animals on the farm. Overall we had an excellent experience and we can't wait to come back in the future!

4 nights at Ruby's Rocks

We came here to celebrate my boyfriend’s 30th birthday and had a few friend’s join us for a few days and it was a wonderful experience! This was our first time using Hipcamp so we weren’t sure what to expect but our experience tops any camping experience we’ve had previously! The weather was beautiful with it being warm and sunny during the day and nice and cool during the nights! It was so cozy and quiet! I loved listening to the sounds of the frogs in the pond near the site and hearing the rushing water in the near by river! It was really nice looking up at the stars at night too! I also loved how many butterflies there were flying around! Susan was a very responsive and attentive host, making sure we had everything we needed and I would recommend this site to anyone looking for a nice peaceful and quiet weekend camping trip!

Everything about this camping destination is special. The ambiance of the environment is hard to beat, we stayed adjacent to the stream and tied our hammocks up right alongside the water. We enjoyed our conversation with Moire and with Randy and our dog had a fun play session with their dogs. We forgot to make our way to the swing overlooking the pond but next time we visit we'll be sure to remember. You won't regret staying here, what a treat!

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with no cell service and stunning scenery, this is the perfect spot! Our jobs can be so consuming, and this getaway was exactly what we needed to unwind, camp, and reconnect with the outdoors. This was our 3rd camping trip this year, and without a doubt, the best place we’ve stayed yet. I didn’t check the mailbox right away (which had a tablecloth inside), so I made a last-minute trip to town to buy one—turns out, I didn’t need to! The guest book is such a great touch; reading everyone’s notes had us laughing and appreciating the simple joys of camping. Morning coffee by the pond, with the sun shining and birds singing, was absolute perfection. We explored a bit but also spent plenty of time simply relaxing and napping—and it was wonderful. Big shoutout to Susan, who had our fire already going and plenty of firewood waiting for us. Considering it poured the entire drive there, that was a huge help! We’re already planning our next trip back—can’t wait to return!

The farm plot is a stunning property with a beautiful pond. Proximity to Indiana is only 3 miles, with the Hoodlebug cycling trail very close by. Wish we could have spent more time there!

Steve was super welcoming and helpful. He checked in on me once I arrived and let me know how to contact him at anytime if I needed anything. The directions he provided to get to the site were easy to follow. The site was quiet and peaceful. It made for a good place to camp overnight and just enjoy nature.

Weekend Trip to Burnhead Grazings

I camped here in June 2023, and for the fourth of July in 2025; it's always a delight to visit and listen to stories by the Hosts Moire and Randy at breakfast! Very polite and friendly, they have two dogs, one is a corgi who is free range and wanders the property. Between the farm animals, wildlife and stunning firefly population, the surrounding scenery always dazzles me when I stay here. The creekside spot is the way to go! Especially during the hot, dry season, the creek is nice to soak in. Plenty of space, firewood, and room to relax in my tent with my bf and his dog. Town is 5 minutes away, including a Giant Eagle for groceries and other conveniences. We had a lovely time!

What an amazing camping experience. This host family was amazing, so kind and helpful. The grounds were clean, the bath house and restrooms were spectacular and close to all sites. Quiet location, and the fishing was great. We will gladly be staying here again.

Susan's site is as described and is a beautiful piece of property. Susan was very communicative and checked in on us to see if we needed anything. Would definitely recommend this site to anyone that wants have a peaceful weekend and enjoy fishing!

Fire pit with nice cooking apparatus that has 3 different tiers. We used two for grilling and one as a table. It adds so much value to the camp site.

Randy was very kind and the property was so beautiful! It rained while we were there but Randy helped us out by giving us towels to clean off our equipment. Felt very attended to and the dogs were great and loved attention.
