The rich history of Burnhead Grazings is enveloped in a love for God's creation. Dr. Gib and Emmy Lou McLaughlin purchased Burnhead, which is Gaelic for the head of the stream, from William H. Stevens. The once pasture for Hilltop Dairy's cows became a pasture for sheep. Gib and Emmy had been in search of land for years after getting their first border collie and falling in love with the Shepherd lifestyle. Gib trained dozens of border collies to work the sheep and did hundreds of demonstrations highlighting the herding abilities of the collie across the country. Their love for Scotland and the border collie took them Scotland on many occasions. Burnhead Grazings is a snapshot of Scotland, "in bye" or close to, the beautiful college town of Indiana, PA. Less than two miles from two hotels, three miles from downtown, and within minutes from Amish country, it is amazing that this respite still exists so close to civilization. Gib and Emmy's daughter, Moire McLaughlin Bridges and her husband Randy have endeavored to bring the sheep back to Burnhead Grazings and to continue the family tradition as well as to share in the experience. You can listen to an interview on The Christian Witness Program on this page for some history about Moire and Randy in Tennessee where they were residing before coming to Indiana. They are producing lamb, wool for spinning and felting, and hay and are opening up the farm for small events such as weddings or family reunions. Moire is also the author and illustrator of a children's book available for sale on iBooks called Sissy & The King. In November of 2014, with the help of Hilltop Baptist Church and many others, they began hosting an event, LIFE Nativity, the weekend before Thanksgiving, which benefits Life-Way Pregnancy Center. Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. 2 nights at Ferns in the Forest

Me and my partner chose to rent this cabin for thanksgiving. It was absolutely fabulous, the cabin is so cozy, the composting toilet did not bring any smell, the shower was great, the bed was very comfortable and the view from the bed was the best part of the trip. I cannot wait to rent this again. Virgil and his wife were also very welcoming. I highly recommend renting this property.

Weekend Trip to WonderWoods at Rocky Gap

Evergreen Grove Campsite was the first Hipcamp site I've stayed at and Kristen's space was exactly what the description and pictures implied. The Water Shed was convenient and had all the things I needed. There was even firewood for the fire pit. The space was close to Kristen's house, but still peaceful. Kristen was sweet and greeted me once I arrived. There were hikes within walkable distance. My only regret is that I'd stayed two nights instead of one!

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest

Virgil & Pam really go above and beyond at The Fern House! The cabin was comfy and stocked with everything one could need for an extended weekend away. Our hosts were generous and gracious. They provide great communication and hospitality. We spent 3 nights and wish it could've been longer! Our pups loved the mile walk around the property each morning plus great hiking spots nearby. We took advantage of the fireplace, local eatery suggestions, and the loft was the perfect hideaway for resting and waking to beautiful wooded views. We cant wait to come back!

The place and the organization was pretty good. In general a great place where to camp for the first time. The only issue I had is that the tent area is too close to the RV area. This means children screaming were annoying and also people just beating stuff or maybe a gun range. In any case, it is pretty noisy outside of the quiet hours.

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest

We absolutely loved staying in the Fernhouse!! It was perfect. It was adorable and so cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was wonderful! So close to hiking trails and lots of outdoor recreation. The hike around the property was beautiful and our dogs loved walking it with us in the morning. The outdoor area is super cozy too. Virgil was so kind and welcoming. We will be back again in another season!! I would highly recommend.

This was a fantastic place for us to break up our trip to the northeast. It is worth the drive 100%, the views are fantastic and it is very private. Yvonne was easy to communicate with and super responsive. We are already looking at the calendar for the next trip out.

This was a great site. Would definitely recommend it and go out of our way to come here again. The directions were easy to follow, it was fun to paddle around in the lake and we caught a fish. The dogs loved it as well.

Great spot, perfect for a getaway from Baltimore for my wife and me. The cabin was well stocked with everything we needed and we had such a fun time eating all our meals by the fire and exploring Rocky Gap. Kristen was very helpful! We will be back for sure!

My wife and I had the best time at WonderWoods! Kristen was such an easy going, and thoughtful host! She has many items in the bathhouse for people to use in case they forget something, and the facilities were perfectly maintained. Always tons of firewood on hand, and a beautiful location that is big enough to enjoy alone time, with a big fire or friends if you wanted. We have already told all of our friends, and recommend this spot for anyone like us looking to get away from city life for a while. Can’t wait to return.

It is a very lovely and picturesque camping spot. I would definitely go there again. You are surrounded by farm country in front and the mountain behind you. Gorgeous!!! I will say that you should be prepared for the Spotted Lantern Flies. That is not Yvonne’s fault, it’s just the current insect nuisance. They don’t bother humans though. I camped alone but I felt completely safe there. So peaceful. Just what I needed. Thank you Yvonne!!!

Virgil goes above and beyond, the little house is very comfy and well appointed, and it’s so great to have a mile long trail right at your doorstep for early morning and evening walks! Virgil even left biscuits for my dog ❤️ I think of this place as a home away from home.
