TOM'S REST was created by Tom's wife Cheryl in an effort to carry out their plans to provide respite for those in need. Tom Edwards worked tirelessly for years to clear this wild recreation space where he planned to live while helping others. Tom suddenly and unexpectedly passed February 2, 2015 while in the process of making his move to Sisters with his High School sweetheart of 45 years. Cheryl continued his passion and their dream to make this a place for those in need as a way to honor the most giving man she ever knew. This process, while overwhelming, has brought some healing and it is our hope to continue that healing for others in need from life's many trials. We continue to use our funds to promote healing in grief and other trials of life. We would appreciate hearing from those that have anything to contribute in way of maintenance and housekeeping, services to provide those in need such as massage or counseling, or any other contributions you are led to give. We are developing a list of volunteers to be called upon when someone in need is referred to us and will keep you informed as things develop. Anyone having a grief, widows/widowers, caregiver, cancer, hospice or other group that would like to have their group listed should message us as well. These respite visits are short getaways to refuel and support individuals during tough times. Those that come to enjoy Tom's Rest will be ministering to those in need through your paid visits here and hopefully, gain some needed respite of your own. We have taken every precaution for distancing and cleanliness with the ever changing Covid policies for your safety and concerns. Most feel they are pretty much 'on their own' in this retreat area with the option for seclusion OR mingling if so desired. My deepest thanks to all who have stood alongside through this journey and continue to do so. Sit on the porch and enjoy the solitude only minutes from Oakridge. Grocery store, etc... all available in Oakridge. Beautiful, safe and secluded. Elk, deer, and other forest critters live here too. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

OtterLodge lies at the end of the road, on the rim of beautiful Whychus Creek Canyon. The property is surrounded by 60-acre Aspen Hollow nature preserve to the north, 40 unoccupied private acres to the south, and 40 acres of conservation easement to the west--so we're surrounded here by of over a hundred acres of nature. One of only three Golden Eagle cams in the world is located on this property. (The other two are in Europe. The website is www.GoldenEagleCam.org, and the camera streams from mid-February when the eggs are laid, to early June, when the babies fledge.) Other animals I've seen here: wild turkey, deer, Western Lynx, and mountain lion (don't worry--they're shy!). There are beaver and otters in the nature preserve to the north, and I recently had to pause as I was driving out to let a stampede of elk pass over the driveway! Imagine being able to enjoy all that from the comfort of your own Happier Camper modern retro travel trailer! There's a big, comfy bed, and a kitchen (see pics for details). There's wifi available in the trailer--but if you'd prefer to go on a digital diet while you're here, I can withhold the password if you'd like! ;-) There's no bathroom in the trailer, but you will have access to the bathroom in the shop about 100 paces away. Like most shop bathrooms, it's nothing fancy--but it does have a flush toilet, hot and cold running water, and a shower. Other amenities include a climbing rock, horseshoe pits, short (1-2 mile) hikes out the door, excellent star-gazing (very little light pollution), and several benches/chairs/tables set up around the place to take in the views. If you brought bikes and want to bike to town, it's about 8 miles via the scenic bike route (or a 6.7 mile drive via the highway). A WORD ABOUT DOGS--BOTH MINE AND YOURS. It's dog heaven out here, and dogs are quite welcome, provided they get along well with other dogs, of whom there are currently four in residence. Your area is not fenced (although I can provide up to 48 linear feet of portable dog pen, if you'd like), and my four are often with me around the property (i.e., PLEASE NOTE: not behind a fence). So please tell me BEFORE BOOKING if your dog does not get along well with other dogs (or if you or your children are afraid of or dislike dogs) and we can discuss the details, and see if we can work something out. If you book w/out discussing it first, please assume that (after an initial, supervised meet-the-dogs introduction shortly after your arrival) there will be dogs out and about on the property when I am at home. (If I leave the property, they will be put inside my house while I'm gone.) They range in size from 22 to 50 pounds, and range in age from 7-16 years old. All are people- and dog-friendly. Prolonged barking drives me nuts and is never allowed, so don't worry about having your peace or sleep disrupted! :-) Note: the trailer only has room for two adults; there is a queen bed, a small kitchen, and only a few square feet of open floor space. If you book for more than 2 people, you must provide a tent, bedding, and camp mats for those people. (Only exception would be a small, co-sleeping child.) There is a flat tent site just a few feet from the trailer.

Camping in Wickiup Reservoir with showers guide

Overview

Not far from the town of La Pine in the Central Oregon high desert, Wickiup Reservoir is a well-known spot for cooling off in the oftentimes sweltering summer months. Both non-motorized and motorized boats are allowed here, and there are multiple boat launches, with two at the two lakeside campgrounds and a third on the reservoir’s eastern banks. Wickiup Reservoir is also a popular spot for both birdwatching and fishing, particularly if you're hoping to catch a large brown trout. While many people fish directly from their boats, shore fishing is an option earlier in the season.

Notable campgrounds

Best for groups: Gull Point Campground has two group campsites for up to 30 people.
Best for anglers: Reservoir Campground offers direct access to the water.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Reservations for the can be made directly through the Forest Service, either online using recreation.gov or over the phone. Campsites open up for reservation six months in advance, at 6 am.
The peak season runs from the end of May until the end of September. Outside of that time, campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you can’t find a spot at Wickiup, note that there are still tons of places to camp in the area, both in nearby state parks, on BLM land, and at privately run Hipcamps.

When to go

The best time to visit Wickiup Reservoir is in late spring or early autumn, when the weather is warm and dry and the crowds are fewer. July and August are also great months if you like warm weather, but the reservoir and area campgrounds can get very busy with summer vacationers. Accessing the area during the cold winter months can be challenging due to heavy snowfall.

Know before you go

The easiest place to pick up groceries and other supplies is the town of La Pine, about a half-hour drive from the reservoir.
Do not enter the water during cyanobacteria (harmful algae) blooms. The forest service puts out alerts about blooms, but it's always a good idea to do a visual check just in case. Water that looks foamy or thick and is a green, blue, or brownish-read color should be avoided.
Forest fires are an issue in this part of the forest, and bans on fires and even some types of cooking devices are not uncommon. Check before igniting anything.
