Jim and Kathy Grogg purchased Pleasant Valley Farm in 1994 and not only updated the house and barn, but also expanded the lake to its current 13 acres. The Flying J Farm is 250 beautiful rolling acres including 100 acres of forest, 6-acre lake small pond, three streams, and numerous fields for crops and pastures with cows. The owner bought the farm in 1998 for his retirement from a faculty position at the Ohio State university. Two buildings, the farm house and old barn, are original dating back to 1831. These have been restored for current use. The mission of the farm is to restore health both in people though the products produced and in the land by farming in a sustainable way with no conventional chemicals, antibiotics, and use of GMO. We host many visitors including tours and events. An on farm market is available to visitors for purchase of our products including grass-fed beef, maple syrup, and fruits and vegetables. The cabin was built using wood from the farm. It has off-grid electricity meaning it is powered by batteries charged by solar panels. There is not sufficient power for devices with a heating element such as coffee makers and hair dryers. You may charge cell phones. For any other use, please check with the owner. Wild Life. There is an abundance of wildlife to be observed on the farm. Deer can be seen at dusk, raccoons can be seen going through your camp food at night (if you put it in your car), turkeys, hawks, vultures, rabbits, coyotes (heard screaming at night), frogs (especially heard at night), fish (jumping), and many song birds (my favorite, the bobolink, May and June only, nesting in the pastures). Trash. This sustainable farm has no garbage hauling, please carry away your trash.

Summer brings on the bullfrogs, butterflies, dragonflies and fireflies. Fall is a great time to pull grapevine to make wreaths & to build stick forts in the woods. We cater to the tent camper so that we can hear frogs & owls instead of generators. But, there is an RV section up front for those with quiet generators with several feet of gravel under the grass to hold the weight of your camper. We charge by the carload & there are different rates for driving back toward the woods for camping depending on the number of wheels & the weight of your vehicle (a factor on the wear & tear on the land). We believe in going outside to play, growing & eating fresh food, strengthening family bonds and promoting the awareness of our natural resources. We cater to the tent camper so that we can hear frogs & owls instead of generators. But, there is an RV section up front for those with quiet generators with several feet of gravel under the grass to hold the weight of your camper. We charge by the carload & there are different rates for driving back toward the woods for camping depending on the number of wheels & the weight of your vehicle (a factor on the wear & tear on the land). We believe in going outside to play, growing & eating fresh food, strengthening family bonds and promoting the awareness of our natural resources. This little getaway was everything. The rustic, bohemian vibe was thoughtfully executed. It was warm, inviting, and so clean! The hosts are excellent communicators which was evident right way. They have taken care of every detail. Seriously, leave it all at home! Blankets, lanterns, kitchen/cooking items - stocked! We drove over 3 hours to camp in someone's backyard. Was it worth it? YES! Not negatives, but some things to consider: There is a train nearby that you hear all night which i find personally comforting. You will also hear a decent amount of traffic noise from the nearby road. Although you're tucked away, there are still people and other glampers on the neighboring property that you can hear and see. Also, the waterfront is super cute! Probably good for fishing and walking the property, but too mucky for taking a dip. Oh! The nearby downtown area is also fabulous with lots of great shops, bars, and restaurants. This sweet little glamp spot has everything. 💕

Nice spot, easy to get to. The trees are dense so it gets dark early, feels like you’re truly in the woods. The walking path around the lake is well maintained. Plenty of fishing jumping in the morning. The structure is basic but kept us warm and dry! Would come back

Me and my Dad stayed at The Shady Owl Ranch for a few days and it was amazing!! It was super cute, I loved every small detail, with the pictures on the walls and the whole esthetic was cozy- we loved everything so much!! It was so peaceful and full of animals!! Host/hostess are very helpful and nice. I recommend you read pre-arrival instructions before arriving. If it’s going to be dark when you’re arriving, make sure you have a big flashlight to use when you’re going to the cabin. The stovetop is manually lit without the “clicking” of a pilot. I suggest putting the burner on low. The surrounding area has a full service grocery store and a few fast and fast casual restaurants within 2 miles. Finally, beware of the free range Turkey. They will lounge behind your vehicle and will not leave. We just drove around them to get out. Overall, we enjoyed the quiet and peaceful setting of the cabin. We would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a good retreat or recharge trip. The honey and eggs were delicious and worth adding to the trip. The unlimited firewood would be great for a longer stay, but wasn’t valuable for what was a little more than one night stay because of our last minute trip.

Host were quick to respond to requests and questions. Cabin was Soo cute and perfect amount of space for us (2 adults and 1 older kid). Having the option for AC and a real bed is what I needed to relax and get away from "life" but also cook on the fire and sit by the water. Turkeys do get close and that was awesome. A lil overnight getaway in the Conifer Cabin was just what we needed. We fished the pond, had a small fire, listened to the sounds of nature, played card games, and most of all enjoyed the peacefulness.
