Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic. While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.' When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends. Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind. LOCAL ACTIVITIES: To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away. 15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking. Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away. Heading east, you can find several fine wineries andvineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town. About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To the northeast, about 45 minutes away, is Stone Mountain. Absolutely fantastic hiking, it is also an old homestead that has been renovated and is open to the public. To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river. There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages. We had the absolute best stay at the little adjacent barn. Very special to have all the sweet animals all around us. The cottage has everything you need, including fresh eggs and coffee/tea. We had a fire in the fire pit with wood provided. Elizabeth has some awesome recommendations for things to do in the area, which we took her up on and thoroughly enjoyed. Good people, good time!!! Highly recommend this peaceful stay in nature.

Perfect for a trip to Charlotte (~30min away) w/ my partner and dog! The bed in the camper was comfy, bathroom/shower/kitchen was clean, and the site itself was very cute! The host was kind enough to set up the fire pit (after the rain) for us while we stepped out, and was very easy to reach & accommodating! I appreciated that there was a tree tether by the fire pit for my curious dog, which made it so we could enjoy our time by the fire without having to hold her leash. 3 nights at Tiny House in Happy Valley

I love this cabin. This was my second visit and it was just as relaxing as the first. I enjoyed sitting on the porch, reading my book and listening to the sounds of the creek. It was a perfect spot to take a few days to relax and recharge. Highly recommend!!!

Weekend Trip to Rustic Ridge Rooftop Skoolie

We had the best time on Steven’s land in the Rooftop Skoolie! Steven was an extremely gracious and communicative host, and we felt incredibly cared and provided for throughout the entire trip! The bus sits at the backside of a beautiful property and feels completely private. We opted for Steven to provide a bundle of firewood for us, and a large, dry stack was waiting for us when we arrived! While sitting around the fire pit, you’ll enjoy mountain views and wide open rolling hay fields. We loved roasting marshmallows and catching fireflies in the evening. The newly constructed “outhouse” (toilet, shower, and laundry) was gorgeous, clean, and climate controlled, which made getting cleaned up after a long hot day of hiking a real treat. The bus itself was a highlight of the trip for my two boys. They loved sitting behind the wheel, pressing all of the switches and buttons, and operating the door for us to move in and out. The interior has been carefully designed and crafted to maximize utility without sacrificing comfort. While we did spend most of our time outdoors, we were all able to sleep comfortably inside. There’s a small selection of card and board games that we played at the picnic table during downtime and didn’t feel the need to turn the TV on at all. If you’re looking for a special weekend getaway close to hiking, swimming, waterfalls, fishing, mountain biking, paddling, and so much more, look no further than the Rooftop Skoolie! 10/10 would recommend!

Where to go

Lake Norman

Less than 30 minutes from Mooresville lies Lake Norman, which holds the title for the biggest man-made lake in North Carolina at 32,510 acres. From swimming and fishing to jet ski rentals and chartered cruises, aquatic adventures are endless. Lake Norman also boasts a beer and wine trail map that lists local breweries and wineries dotting the area. Drive-in yurt camping near Lake Norman is another favorite option, and many of these campsites offer picnic tables, firewood, and drinking water.

Uwharrie National Forest

Covering 51,546 acres and sitting just over one hour east of Mooresville, Uwharrie National Forest offers horseback riding trails through the trees, hiking trails, mountain biking loops, and OHV trails. Camping options include pitch-your-own tent campgrounds, RV campsites, dispersed wilderness camping, and even horse-friendly campsites in select areas. There’s a 14-day limit on camping within a 30-day period.
