When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling.
Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood.
You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7.
Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more.
Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. This site is accessed via a short trail through the trees down a gentle, sloping hill, and finally by a short stairway, and as such it may not be easily accessible for campers with limited mobility.
Located on the grounds of the Duckpond Pottery, The Quack Shack is a secluded treehouse perched along the banks of the French Broad River. The structure is an 8x10 A-frame that transforms via a hinged wall into an open-air cabana with a charming deck that affords spectacular views of the French Broad River and surrounding countryside. The interior of the Quack Shack, with its vaulted 11-foot ceiling and earthen plaster walls, provides a warm glow in a rainforest environment. It is furnished with a comfortable seating area surrounding a coffee table that can be easily converted to a full-size queen bed at night. On the outside deck are beach chairs and a chimenea available for use. The quack shack has electric power (1 outlet only).
Amenities include a bathroom located a short walk away at the main building as well as an open-air on-demand shower located off the bathroom on a deck overlooking the French Broad River. Morning coffee and tea is available at The Tea Hut located just a hop, skip, and jump from the treehouse. A new two person wood fired hot tub and cold plunge is now located just off the steps of the treehouse. (Contact us if you’d like to reserve it during your stay. NOTE: The Duckpond Pottery is a working studio pottery and gallery that is open to the public. It is also home to occasional open-air house concerts on the deck at the pottery. 1 night at The Quack Shack
Everything about this place was perfect! From being greeted with such a warm welcome, to the pottery area, to the beautiful view that I woke up to in the quack shack!!! it was the most beautiful day!

I found it lovely in my passing through for 2 nights! The river was nice, I felt safe and secluded, and there was everything I needed! The shower was a huge plus! The store is convenient if needed, too. I heard cars passing from Campsite 1, but it wasn’t an annoyance. I’m sure it’s quieter with foliage too, as I was there in December. There was eucalyptus growing on the farm and it was nice to walk by and smell too. Thank you for opening your space!

It was perfect!! The only issue i had was how close it is to the freeway. Too much traffic noise. Other than that, wonderful property and wonderful host! Craig was awesome!

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in campsite 1. We loved sitting by the fire overlooking the creek. The camp store was stocked with firewood and had a coffee pot for our use, which was very nice. Even though a highway was close, the traffic noise was never a concern. It was quiet at night. Craig was a nice host, and very helpful. We would love to camp there again.

This was such a peaceful retreat! The warm shower, toilet, coffee and camp store really amplified my stay! Super easy to find with Craig’s clear instructions, even in the dark! Highly recommend!!

We had a great time this weekend. The site was the perfect balance of privacy and convenience, and it's just a beautiful site.
The bathroom and shower was great. It's conveniently located and very clean.
The owner was incredibly responsive and easy to work with.
I would definitely recommend staying here.

19 ft campervan
Stayed in site 2 and it was nice and secluded. Bathhouse was a nice surprise also. Host keeps it clean and tidy. YMMV as to how fellow campers keep it. Beach is sandy so there is no parking directly by creek but we backed up as far as we could safely go for a nice view from our van. Firepit and picnic table are right on the beach area though. Very nice spot. I highly recommend.

Shawn’s property truly is a little slice of paradise. The campsites were private and beautiful, and the waterfall was such a hidden gem! Far enough off the beaten path to feel secluded but still close enough to town and hiking. 10/10 would recommend.

Amazing property and campsite especially for a bigger group or family! We fit 2 vehicles and 2 tents easily for our family of 4 tweens, 1 teen, 1 dog, and 2 tired crazy parents, with easy access to river, facilities, and a fantastic little camp store. Craig was super responsive and helpful, going above and beyond to loan us something we forgot to pack. We loved floating from campsite 1 down to 3, and walking back to do it again. We will 100% be back!

Very private, quite, very warming. You can catch fish. We really like how each station is spaced far from each other, very private. Definitely a come back place.
Their is restroom next to the old house, shower all new construction. When you call the owner with any questions, he answers right away, and get you what you need. Lovely place.

Amazing spot for our family and friends to camp for the weekend. My kids (5 and 7) spent half their time in the creek. The site is quite sandy as it’s all along the shore. We loved nights by the fire pit and days spent wandering the property and enjoying the remnants of the flower farm! Craig was a fantastic, responsive and attentive host. When a limb had fallen and we couldn’t access site 3, he quickly got out and had it cleared so that the other members of our camping party could get in without a problem. The bathroom is fantastic. The sites are not visible from each other and I love the idea of booking a couple spots there when the kids are older and letting them float down the creek between sites. It’s perfect depth for it. We saw a river otter, heron, lots of little fish, baby toads and so many wildflowers at our sites! Heard coyotes and owls at night. The road noise from highway 25 is quite pronounced at site #1 and less so at site #3. We cranked up the white noise on our second night and that really helped. The creek is very quiet. Highly recommend for families or multiple group campouts!

Absolutely beautiful property! The private beach was perfect for the kids to play in the river. All the sites looked very well maintained & each offer different perks. Having access to a very nice, clean bathroom was a huge perk to "roughing it". We can't wait to come back again!
