I live off grid in one of the toughest climates in the US. I have about 15 acres of land bordered by 10,000 acres of wild forest preserve. Locals refer to this area as The Hill because of its unique weather anomalies. I share my experiences with campers in good weather but exist here all year. I am a Qualified NYS Woodland Guide. My actual license is pending the processing of fees and registration. This should be complete by August 1st of this year. I have over a half century of knowledge gained through a lifetime of hiking, exploring and living in this environment. My main focus is the land, lakes, ponds and streams in the lower Adirondack Park. I leave the high peaks, ice climbing and white water rafting to others that choose that speciality. My goal in guiding is not that of a just a follow me and listen guide. I strive to help those interested in learning about and enjoying the outdoors safely so that you take away real life skills you can use once we are done. I did search and resuce work as a volunteer for many years under DEC Forest Rangers. To help contain costs l will allow up to groups of people to participate at one time. Also. If you would like Amish made products, l can arrange that as well. There is a very conservative Amish community in the surrounding area. I consider these people my good friends and l am very familiar with their customs, traditions and lifestyles. Many people are now thinking of doing what we have done. If you so choose, we can schedule time to discuss any of the offgrid issues that may be unanswered in your mind. The original intent was to offer a peaceful place for you to escape for a time. What a lovely little get-away this was. The hermit thrushes tweeted gently all around, the fairy lights along the paths and cabins lit up after dark, making the whole place quite enchanting, day and night. We were the only folks who happened to be camping there and so we enjoyed absolute solitude and all the summer sounds of the old woods. While there I could tell so much thought and care went into making this place as cozy as can be. Savanna was beyond gracious, through and through. Karl’s home is close to the serenity cabin, but I didn’t mind it. When driving there make sure to use the coordinates because the address Hipcamp offers is incorrect.

Lovely and cozy cabin in a private area. The hosts were great and super helpful. The cabin is solar/battery powered but they ran a quiet generator to refill the battery when it ran out. The bathroom building is right by the cabin and has a flush toilet and hot shower. The running water isn't potable, but they provided a water cooler for drinking water.

We were really looking forward to this stay, and it exceeded our expectations! Karl greeted us when we arrived, along with his daughter, and took the time to show us around and share helpful information about the property and the surrounding area. The cabin was cozy and comfortable. The bed is a pull-out futon, so I would recommend bringing a mattress pad or sleeping bag if you prefer a little extra cushioning for sleeping. Karl has also recently installed a solar battery pack, which provides lighting and allows for basic device charging, making the cabin even more convenient. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and would absolutely stay here again the next time we're in the area for hiking or visiting Utica. Highly recommend!

My husband and I were looking for someplace quiet and private to relax and unwind. Karl lives on the property behind the cabin and welcomed us with a burning fire. Even with Karl on the property directly behind us, the cabin faced out into the forest and felt very private. We saw Karl one time when he stopped to ask if we needed anything. We came prepare to camp in a rustic cabin and were pleasantly surprised when we walked in to find we really didn’t need much. There was a camp stove and all of the cook wear and utensils, along with dishes, cups and silverware. Karl and is wife have really put thought into every detail. It didn’t bother us a bit when the nights were cold and the first night rained hard. We found a heater and Yahtzee game inside to keep us warm and content. I really can’t think of one way they could improve. Karl was very friendly. We didn’t get the pleasure of meeting his wife but maybe next time because we definitely plan to visit again.
