We live off grid in one of the toughest climates in the US. We have about 15 acres of land bordered by 10,000 acres of wild forest preserve. We share our experiences with campers in good weather but exist here all year. I am a Qualified NYS Woodland Guide. My actual license is pending the processing of fees and registration. This should be complete by July 1st of this year. I have over a half century of knowledge gained through a lifetime of hiking, exploring and living in this environment. My main focus is the land, lakes, ponds and streams in the lower Adirondack Park. I leave the high peaks, ice climbing and white water rafting to others that choose that speciality. My goal in guiding is not that of a just a follow me and listen guide. I strive to help those interested in learning about and enjoying the outdoors so that you take away real life skills you can use once we are done. I did search and resuce work as a volunteer for many years under DEC Forest Rangers. To help contain costs l will allow up to four people to participate at one price. Also, my wife makes soaps, potions and lotions under the Dragonfly Gypsy logo. These normally, only available at shows or Etsy, are now available in limited quantities here at the homestead at a guest only reduced price. She uses mostly natural oils, tallow and ingredients sourced from the local Swartzentrubber Amish Comunity that surrounds us. It is known to be one of the most conservative Old Order Amish Communities in the country. Many are consider our very close friends. If you would like Amish made products, l can arrange that as well. Many people are now thinking of doing what we have done. If you so choose, we can schedule time to discuss any of the off gissues that may be unanswered in your mind. The original intent was to offer a peaceful place for you to escape for a short time. That is still our main purpose. Located right off the ATV trails and just 15 minutes down back roads from the world-famous Salmon River and Salmon River Falls, our off-grid family camp is tucked away a quarter-mile down an old private dirt road in the woods.
Now, we say "off-grid," but this camp gives you the choice to either rough it like they did in the old days or use our generator system to power lights, a TV, shower, microwave, and electrical outlets.
This is a great place to stay after a long day of fishing, hiking, or ATV riding, or if you're simply looking for peace and quiet away from the crowds.
The cabin features a bed in the loft, a pull-out sofa bed, and two additional beds in the side room. (These beds can remain in the side room or be moved into the main cabin if preferred.)
The kitchen runs on propane, and we provide the propane. We also have a fire pit with water located nearby for safety.
If you decide to run the generator and power up the camp, we provide two 5-gallon gas cans. (If the generator runs all night, it will use approximately 5 gallons of gas.)
We enjoy coming out here so much and wish we could stay for weeks at a time, but sadly we can't. So, we're opening up our camp to others who enjoy the outdoors and can appreciate and respect a good old family camp.
I can also provide recommendations on fishing spots and weekend adventures for fishing or ATV riding for guests who are new to the area. Just ask!

My husband and I were looking for someplace quiet and private to relax and unwind. Karl lives on the property behind the cabin and welcomed us with a burning fire. Even with Karl on the property directly behind us, the cabin faced out into the forest and felt very private. We saw Karl one time when he stopped to ask if we needed anything. We came prepare to camp in a rustic cabin and were pleasantly surprised when we walked in to find we really didn’t need much. There was a camp stove and all of the cook wear and utensils, along with dishes, cups and silverware. Karl and is wife have really put thought into every detail. It didn’t bother us a bit when the nights were cold and the first night rained hard. We found a heater and Yahtzee game inside to keep us warm and content. I really can’t think of one way they could improve. Karl was very friendly. We didn’t get the pleasure of meeting his wife but maybe next time because we definitely plan to visit again. A beautiful and affordable stay! The hosts were wonderful, we (the dogs and I) had the whole property to ourselves. Checked out the local conscience store/sandwich shop they recommended and it was excellent. There’s electricity but no heat so I brought a small space heater with me for the chilly nights, it worked great for the space! The dogs loved the pond and all the land to run on. The cabin was very cozy. Thank you Sydney for making this a beautiful and affordable place to stay. It was amazing, we will definitely be back!

We absolutely loved the Smithy! Sydney and Peter have a wonderful set up from extra blankets to keep us warm and the hot shower made our trip was so enjoyable. We fished in the pond, took walks around the property, and watched the sunset both mornings from the top of the hill. Our dog absolutely loved the cut trails and joining us fishing and doing yoga! Truly a one of a kind spot. We can't wait to visit again!

It was a wonderful stay. The cabin was perfect for an anniversary getaway weekend with our 2 dogs. We explored the property with them and earned our cellular signal with a walk up the hill a few times. We had beautiful sunny days but the weather has turned chilly at night - a small electric heater that we brought kept us comfortable without issue. The sandwiches at Bob’s were wonderful and the whole weekend was a success - thank you!

Being welcomed by Karl and Danielle and our path illuminated by torches was a new Hipcamp experience for us. They made sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable and made us feel welcome. We had such an amazing time. The cabin was so cute and they provided a heater and build a fire for us to come into. We loved being surrounded by all the nature and it was so peaceful and calm. We went on a hike. we had great food and we just really enjoyed ourselves. It was a short distance up to old Forge for us where we had some stuff we needed to pick up And then when we came back, Carl had built us another fire to come home too, and it was just amazing. We listened to the owls and the squirrels and all sorts of other animals in the woods. Was so peaceful. We definitely would love to come back again

We had such a peaceful time here! Karl and his wife met us at check in and gave us the run down. We had some great conversation and Karl even started the fire for us while we ran to the gas station for last min items! It was such a nice surprise to come back and have it going. Also Karl does an amazing impression of the local owls and tried to bring one in closer for us, it was quite the entertainment!! We needed the respite after being at our lil sisters wedding the night before. The stars at night area AMAZING! I highly recommend a stay here! So welcoming and peaceful! When I met Savanna upon arrival, she said, “the camp is a labor of love.” And it shows! She and her husband Brad have made a little slice of heaven in a beautiful stand of hard woods and mature white pine. The cabin is off grid but powered up by a high-capacity battery. Super comfy and cozy, it’s a great one-room refuge. Bonus points for the screened porch entryway and easy chairs.
A bath house is a short walk with an outdoor work sink and a lovely interior with tile floors, nice shower, and bath sink I’d be proud to have in my home. Warm, clean, and inviting, it’s a beautiful bath house.
Tho there is no wi-fi, cell works well-enough to stream a movie or podcast.
Highly recommend!

We LOVED it. It's the coolest little cabin, hosts really go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and it's all just so much fun! The property and area is also amazing and now we have to come back again :)
